Great video! As a substitute for VCDS procedures, I believe you are able to cycle the ignition (not start) on and off a few times which aids in priming the fuel lines/pressurizing system - worked great for my MK5 Jetta for years.

Thanks! Unfortunately on the MKVI it doesn't prime when the ignition is turned on, but if you don't have VCDS you can jump the pump under the rear seats and cycle it manually. Also, a lot of people just refill the canister and don't do any priming and seem to not have any issues. I just prime as an extra precaution to help protect the HPFP.

If you were to manually bleed the air out using a vacuum pump like a Mightyvac, which of the four hose(s) at the fuel filter would you need to disconnect and plug the vacuum pump into to draw out the air? This would be on a 2012 mk6 Golf. No need to suck out the “old” fuel and refill with “fresh” diesel. The inside of the fuel filter is the clean side so as long as your not pouring unfilter fuel inside of the filter you’re fine. No need to add fuel to the top if you’re gonna prime the system. And honestly you don’t need VCDS, just cycle the key to prime and crank the dam thing. Air won’t hurt the pump
@InTheGarageDIY

Couple things. 1) The newer 2009+ common rail TDI doesn't prime the pump when you cycle the key. Your options are to manually jump the fuel pump or use VCDS. 2)The HPFP is lubricated by the fuel and the CP4 is notoriously fragile and air doesn't lubricate very well, so better safe than sorry imo. 3) It's true you don't need to drain the canister, I just did it to check for rust or metal particles indicative of a HPFP failure. You don't *have* to have one, but you need one if you want to prime the fuel system after the filter change. This model doesn't prime the system when the key is turned on so you run the risk of air going through the high pressure fuel pump and causing damage. The Bosch CP4 fuel pumps have a history of being a little more fragile and picky when it comes to the lubrication of the pump. The diesel fuel is what lubes the pump so you run the risk of damage to the pump if it forces a bunch of air through it. If you don't prime the fuel system after changing the filter you should at *minimum* fill the canister with fresh diesel.

draining and cleaning the housing is needlessly fiddly and anal IMO. diesel is an excellent cleaner so you should have no worries there, and the diesel in the housing is the same diesel that was going to go into the engine anyway, so why bother?

It's true that the diesel left in the housing would be filtered before it enters the engine. You definitely don't HAVE to drain it completely.
