It was designed by Italian genius Walter DeSilva, hired away from his position as chief of design at Alfa Romeo. He became chief of VW group design and set to change VW the way that Ital Design did the first Golf, polo SCIROCCo & Audi line such as the A3 a4 A5. Thanks to the strong Euro biased to the German Mark, and anti Italian Lira, VW also bought the entire Italian design house: Ital Design, Lamborghini & Ducati! This helped DeSilva dream to design a mid engine Audi supercar with a 10 cylinder Lamborghini engine. Moral of story, when you need good design. Just hire the Italians.

This is the BEST car I have ever owned/driven! We get insane MPGs out of it! Last road trip we did, about a 3 1/2 hour drive we had 64.8 MPGs when I pulled in the driveway! We were gonna get another one, but they’re so hard to find now (not surprising). We wouldn’t take $300k for ours! The Jetta TDI rocks!

I just purchased a 2011 TDI JSW with 30560 on the clock and pick it up this week after they do a detail on it. Since it has been sitting for 3-4 years, it has acquired quite a lot of dirt/dust/pollen in all the cracks and crevices that the dealer is going to take care of. I was sold after my test drive and cannot wait to bring it home. It came with a warranty but I purchased a 5 year, bumper to bumper warranty for $1500 from the VW dealer and feel it was well worth it. Who knows what deteriorated over the time it was parked at the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan. I will rest easy knowing that any and everything will be covered for the foreseeable future.

I so regret getting an 07 legacy wagon.... The tdi wagon drives so much better and is far more comfortable with better mileage. Can't wait to pay off the Legacy and buy a TDI. The dealer offers 2 year warranty of used tdis . Only cost around 10k or so for low miles

Getting ready to pick my 2014 Sportwagen up in a day or two. I realize they are going away, but hard to beat for the price right now. Mine has the manual trans (the only way I'll own a car) and the torque from the diesel was quite sufficient to move it along. They are restrained in style, but that's another reason I like them. In five years, from now (I plan to own it for a while) it won't look outdated. And even though the MPGs may have come down a tad, I doubt they've come down so far as to make a huge difference in the otherwise above-par fuel economy.

VWs don't have the best reputation for reliability but there are a lot of real high mileage VW TDIs out there. Not only that, if you're spending that much time in your car the Jetta is a nice place to be. If you're driving that much i think this would be a great option for you.

@@Spectt84 Not as premium of a vehicle but take a look at the Toyota Prius. Highway mileage is better than this and you'll end up with better reliability and lower operational costs probably. Little bit smaller vehicle but still a wagon. Stay away from the third generation Priuses 2010 to 2015 , the Prius V same vintage. Anything that has the third generation Prius drivetrain have more problems than either the second gen or the current 4th generation. The 4th gen prius are getting 50 mi per gallon on the highway. There's certainly is a stigma attached to driving a Prius but if you're driving as much as you say cost of operations is really your primary concern. I have a 2008 Prius myself that I use for work I drive about the same amount of miles you do. I have 349,000 on the car total, I've put 149,000 in the last 3 years. Mine still gives me between 45 and 50 MPG. Go take one for a spin they're not nearly as slow as the reputation would have you believe. I love the diesels also. I've owned quite a few Volkswagen diesels in the past. But the problem I have with this generation Volkswagen is that 30 something miles per gallon on the highway is not really that great and cost to repair and reliability issues on Volkswagens are not exactly stellar. I really wish they were because I'd be all over one myself being absolutely fantastic highway cruiser.

@@kens97sto171 Thanks for the great reply! To give more context, I landed a delivery contract that requires 255 round trip of all highway driving that runs 6 days per week. I wanted to get a specific vehicle for this that balances mpg, cargo capacity, and vehicle reliability/longevity. I realized the "perfect" vehicle doesn't exist and I would have to make some compromises somewhere. I ended up going with the 4 cylinder Toyota Tacoma, a 2018 Toyota Tacoma SR with a truck cap to be specific. Admittedly, it doesn't do as great on MPG as I was hoping, but it does have the cargo capacity and reliability I need. So far I've been driving the 1500+ miles a week with the Tacoma and so-far-so-good... Other than the MPGs... My average fuel economy over the 10k miles I've driven it over the last 8 weeks is 21.82 mpg... I'm hoping the cost savings in repairs and downtime, will make up for the not-so-great fuel economy in the long run. 🤞

Very reliable! Volkswagen is awesome with the warranties too as our intake manifold cracked, 100% covered! Also, when you get to 100k the timing belt and water pump needs to be changed which is about $1,500...BUT is worth it since it saves a lot in fuel. My husband and I have taken this car on road trips and it is very comfy too! It does awesome going up and down mountains. 9% is the steepest grade and it did superb going up and down. TDI's very reliable if maintained properly. need regular oil changes, fuel filter changes and motorway drives (due to DPF). These badboys are not for city driving, more proper for mid-long commutes. Mine eats 4.1liters of diesel / 100km. If maintenence was lax, expect injectors, high pressure fuel pumps dying , dpf clogging, EGR clogging/breaking. If you consider automatics a full service history is a must. I'm not sure those automatics are even possible to repair correctly. Also forget about the petrol ones. Engine has timing chain design flaw which usually killed a lot of low price petrols.

I went to test drive a 2012 with the sunroof on a rainy day in Texas. Before I returned from the test drive the driver's floor was full of water. Needless to say, I passed on that one and purchased one without the sunroof. The one without the sunroof was quieter than the one with and it feels more solid. The drains in the roof of most of these are clogged from debris accumulation from years of sitting in these storage lots. Nothing that cannot be fixed but you periodically have to clear the drains. Google on youtube VW Jetta panaroof leaks and you will find your fix.

So this is the same TDI model involved with all of the emissions scandals. There are a bunch of these available now in my town real cheap with real low miles as you stated! So I wonder if these small dealers are picking them up from auctions - If they sat around as you mentioned after being bought back and now resold? I'm thinking of picking one up. They look like beautiful cars. Of course, I am mainly worried about reliability, as VW has a very bad track record. Any weird electrical problems yet?

Yes, they are flooding the market with low mileage and inexpensive TDIs. As for reliability diesels tend to be pretty good in the long-term. I owned a 2011 up until about 42K miles with no issues. Not high mileage but at least it was off to a good start.

I believe the reason they have so many is because they bought them back or gave high trade in values for the tdi models immediately post scandal. I'm picking one up next week. My cousin has an 09 tdi with 450xxx kms on it and it's still going very strong
@DrivenCompanion

Yes, and I think the reason they are so reasonably priced is because they are flooding the market with so many so its diminishes the value somewhat. I bet once they've sold them off their resale value will increase again since TDIs have traditionally had strong resale.

@@DrivenCompanion they have a very large supply of cars to unload, and very low demand for them. Unfortunately for vw, they railed themselves by lying about their emissions. Consumers are concerned about a low resale value, and as this has morphed into a throwaway society, few people will mile out cars these days; few think for the long term and see a short term money losing (poor) investment. Because of the damage to their reputation, and the age of the cars on the market, I doubt they will ever be able to sell them for much higher than they are now, unless they were to import them to other markets.
