I like your show, but as a general feedback, could you spend a little time showing the actual car when you review it? As in, show the dash a little bit more, show the trunk, perhaps a brief look under the hood. Nothing super elaborate, mind you. I just notice that some car reviews all we get to see is two perspectives of you driving and very little of the car itself.

Like many of the others commenting here, I love your show as well. I had no idea there were so many different electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids available. I guess they're not all available in one country of course but still, things are improving. Your show has definitely changed my opinion on plug-in hybrids as well. I use to think they were just a half step, adding lots of complexity but not really worth it but I can see now that they are at least a step in the right direction. I've also really enjoyed the shows that give the bigger picture including the interviews with the power station managers, Chelsea Sexton, etc.

(Except for the price.) ;) The problem as a VW driver is, you see how good they did it, if you switch to another car make, and find all these tiny little details that are just annoying in other cars. :D Finally as a German I don't hate you Brits. One can just not understand you, why you are doing things so differently.. Worst example would be the brexit voting. (But that's not the topic here!) +fullychargedshow As a suggestion you might consider doing a brief overview and then linking to the official vehicle information online (even if it is just a press release ATM) and a couple of those respected sources/reviewers in the description. Don't forget to mention the links to the viewer though, as so many people do a bad job of using the description that allot of people ignore it unless you remind them. One further suggestion is, depending on the support working behind the show with you and time available, You might want to do a light blog with a series episode guide linking back to KZitem Episodes, but also having a copy of your links/descriptions/sponsor references. It will make someone looking for a single episode later find it easier, allow you to do an RSS feed announcing new episodes reliably without dumping them in a person's email, and probably give your show better search rankings over time.

I'd rather see pure electric vehicles with range extenders, on the reasoning that more attention would be put on the development of electric motors and batteries technologies vs ICE's. Compared to BMW's and Audi's, the Tesla seems reasonable once you factor in build quality. The VW automated charging arm looks a bit less alien probe-y than the Tesla version. I wonder if the Passat uses active sound suppression and generation through the sound system? I drove last year's regular gas version of the Passat, but wasn't pleased with its electronic transmission - not very smooth.

I like the Passat. In Sweden they sell the EcoFuel, natural gas version like crazy (which then is driven on 50% at least renewable gas). In theory it's brilliant and doesn't use any space in the luggage compartment for the compressed gas tanks. I guess it's the same with the Plug-In version, right? The Plug-In seems nice. But, the weight of the thing is really a lot. For example, the gearbox (which has three clutches, two for the combustion engine and one for the electric motor) seems a bit over the edge. Especially since it weighs 98 Kg, while the engine itself weighs 104 Kg (!!!). Why not just skip the gearbox, like in the Koenigsegg Regera? (and in a questionable way, the Prius) Or just as a backup generator that's not connected to the wheels (like the Bmw i3) I hope we'll see more Plug-In hybrids for the masses in the future. And, a standardized charging infrastructure.

A very old comment but one that needs to be said. I've been living in Holland for about 18 yrs and the last thing that comes to mind when refering to "dutch drivers" is "very polite". Ex:1 They hardly use indicators and, when they do, they use it too late. Ex:2 While on the motorway (snelweg for dutchies) they absolutely find it normal to drive on the left lane even if there isn't no one else on the road l, regardless of how many lanes avaiable. Ex:3 When driving in the city NEVER EXPECT THE DUTCH TO GIVE WAY! If you have to join a busy street where you don't have priority, you NEED TO MAKE YOUR WAY IN! Slowly point the car into the road and with your left hand, through the window, make a sign that you are going to go...Try to smile at them while doing it. It avoids car horns and incompreesible gesticulations, although it won't avoid that feeling that your did something extremely wrong. "Because it was not your turn and now you're in front of me!" Anyway, I could go on and on...but beying myself a portuguese emigrant in Holland, I think I should say more. In reality we aren't much better driving around Lisbon (or around any other portuguese city) But hey!! I admit it !

...and also avoiding road tax of course - please see previous comment. At £145 for our ancient 1.2 clio 8 valve, that is the same as filling the tank 4 times from totally empty to the brim. 350 miles or so per tank, and let's say 1500 miles max for all four tankfuls. That is a fifth of our annual mileage in that car, we have to pay twice for. Or, put another way, this ancient 43 mpg car is being charged £145 for being 2mpg less than Renault's brand new Clio Tce 900cc turbo petrol car, the stop-start one is zero-rated. And we know they are more likely than not cheating the pollution figures, so the UK tax table based on CO2 emissions is actually a work of fiction. Let's affix a gas meter to the exhaust on both, for an identical run, real-world! Or again another way, we got offered £300 for the car the other day. So, two years road tax! Boo-hiss! No, electric IS the way to go, it's now obvious the oil companies have finally had their levee breached, well past time.

How do these plug-in hybrids differ to hybrids such as Toyota Prius or Honda Insight? Is the only difference that they can be charged by a charger as well as using the internal combustion engine to charge the battery?
@tomsdaddy
9 жыл бұрын
So, are these VW Hybrids 'True' Hybrids, in that you can drive it with the petrol engine running constantly at its most efficient RPM, to charge the battery which then drives the wheels ? I only ask, because my Wife's just bought a Toyota Yaris 'Hybrid', - which doesn't really do that atall, but only uses the battery for stop/start stuff below 30mph, - which is sort of a different thing altogether . . .
@bassbacke
9 жыл бұрын
+Nick Cummings As far as I understand it what you describe are electric cars with a range extender (like the Chevrolet Volt or the BMW i3 with range extender option). Both use only an electric motor in their drive train and a internal cumbustion engine as a generator. Hybrids use internal combustion engines with an automatic gear shift in their drive train and use an electric motor and battery on top (making the gear shift more complicated) so no constant RPM with a hybrid car unless you stay at the same speed.
@bassbacke
9 жыл бұрын
+1225KPH The article behind your link states "There is no "direct" mechanical linkage between the Volt's gas engine and the wheels". So not that complex after all. Anyway, I do own a battery electric car and I will no longer buy any car with an internal combustion engine so no Volt for me. I might rent a car like that if necessary, but own one? Nah, been there, done that. Then again that's due to my usage of cars (no long distances). I usually travel long distances by train (mostly) or plane (very rarely) and I keep such travels to a minimum. Yes, I know not everybody can do that.
@bassbacke
9 жыл бұрын
+1225KPH First of all I was referring to Gen 1 Volt. I do not read every update of every car that I lost interest in long ago, it does not mean in any way that I'm not interested in learning. Fine with me if you like to make (incorrect) assumptions about others. What I do not understand is why you're so emotionally attached to that car that you feel the urge to "defend" the car from what you apparently perceived as an "attack". I'm not fine with your agressive language. Particularly I do not have a dismissive lazy ass mind and what I can comprehend is very likely beyond your comprehension. I learn something every day, you might want to try learning respect and manners in conversations with people you know nothing about, even if this is KZitem. I did not have to assume anything, just read what you wrote above. A Toyota Prius drive train is also complex, it's still a hybrid. Looking at the second link Gen 2 can indeed be seen as a hybrid. By definition a fully electric car with range extender does *all* motion using *only* electric motors and the ICengine is *only* used for electric power generation (extending the range). The Gen 1 Volt qualified for that. Gen 2 Volt apparently does not anymore. Particularly if you look at CS1-3 the schematics suggest a direct mechanical link to planetary gear 1 and through that to the wheels, so a hybrid it is or the schematics are wrong. So Gen 2 Volt is no longer a fully electric car with range extender but a fancy hybrid. Lesson learned. In any case I prefer not to haul around any inefficient and air poluting ICengine burning fossil fuels in my car, which is why I chose a battery electric car. That's my personal choice. The hydro powered power plant producing the electricity for my car is far more environmentally friendly than any ICengine could ever hope to be. That's a fact. In any case my days of burning fossil fuels for my daily transportation where over the moment I started using my electric car ca. 15 months ago. That's both a fact and my choice. If you need to burn fossil fuels for whatever reasons you may just as well do it with style and efficiency, so the Gen 2 Volt may be right for you. Or any other modern hybrid. Like the one in this video.
@bassbacke
9 жыл бұрын
Not according to the schematics. I did my research when the car came out and the ICengine had no mechanical connection to any planetary gear so it could not directly cause motion, only through electric power generation and electric motors (hence it was called a fully electric car). It was actually the main selling point and made the difference between the Gen 1 Volt and hybrids - unless that was a lie, which I doubt.

I don't need to know anything about daft old cars like the M5, they are irrelevant and obviously there are hundreds of dull men who can tell you all about them, endlessly driving them sideways on disused runways again and again. +Larry Smith 2 reasons, 1, I was trying to be funny. His ridiculous comment did make me laugh and 2, far more importantly, he wasn't asking a legitimate question. He was having a dig, he was being inherently critical and making a totally spurious point from the Top Gear old men in jeans camp. The object of Fully Charged is to reveal the alternatives to ancient behemoths like the BMW M5 and all that they stand for. The whole point of my role is to show a distinct lack of interest in all the ridiculous, ultra inefficient stupidity that is 'high performance' petrol/diesel cars. I think we can both agree they get massive coverage everywhere even though only 0.0001% of people who avidly watch, discuss and fantasise about such mechanical monstrosities can afford to own one.

Whats the efficiency of inductive charging? How much energy will we waste when 1000s of evs are charged that way? I suspect its a big lose!

+Christopher Beasley According to Qualcomm who are rapidly deploying inductive charging systems, the losses are LESS than through a cable. They are very insistent about this. Since it appears that battery life is improved if you maintain the charge in the range of 80% to 30% (or so) it would be helpful of the plugin hybrids help you maximize that. I am curious of people who use the car for longer commutes would tend to run the batteries to low levels daily and shorten the battery life.
@fullychargedshow

+mwildish I think this is where battery management software come into play. A battery in an electric or plug in hybrid is never 'full' or empty' even when the gauge on the dash indicates it as such. A completely empty Nissan Leaf battery will take just short of 19kWh to fill, although the stated capacity is 24 kWh. This upper and lower buffer is designed to avoid exactly what you are suggesting
@mwildish

fullychargedshow I agree this is probably true. The thing about Tesla is that they let the driver set their own management. This is great for someone like myself who has a technical mind, but for many people it would be a problematic as they would just go from 100% to 0% every time if they could. When I look at comments on sites about electric cars the most common excuse by many not to buy is that the high cost of a battery replacement makes them expensive to run. The reality is that most people would never have to replace a battery even after 300 or 400 thousands miles (a mileage most people would never accumulate). I don't think manufacturers stress this enough.

1225KPH Nissan guarantees capacity 60 months or 60,000 miles. Hardly a great warranty. I drive that in 18-20 months. Unofficially Tesla owners have been told that a capacity of 70% would be considered a valid warranty replacement. Tesla owners with 150,000 miles have claimed a less that 5% loss. So I think this is really a non-issue.
@mwildish

1225KPH First, I don't have my head up Elon's ass...be civil. I think Tesla should give a official capacity warranty. Maybe a scale that gives a certain capacity over time. My guess is that they don't because this is kind-of an unknown for many companies so they are waiting for a track record to see what is reasonable. Nissan's 60000 mile warranty is probably because they had a class action suite from owners is the southwest who lost 25% in the first year because of the heat. They are just doing damage control. As for the supercharger issue. Tesla makes it clear that the superchargers are for people who are traveling. That they would be able to use them when away from home. Your daily charging is something you do at home. A lot of people who live near superchargers were using them or people where parking at a supercharger and leaving the car there for a day. Those were the issues.

I have disagree that plug in hybrids don't slow down EV's. A month ago I tried to find an E-Golf in the Netherlands and found most dealers don't even bother to have one in their showroom and where spreading some serious misinformation on top of that. I said it before and I'll say it again: German OEM's will do anything they can to slow the development / acceptance of EV's and pushing PHEV's is one way they persue.

+Ad van der Meer I'd say that's the dealers rather than the manufacturers. A big chunk of the dealer's profits come from servicing cars. It's against their best interests to sell cars that don't need services. Ever wonder why there's a little electric motor, switches, fuse and wiring so that you can adjust the mirrors. A task you do once when you buy the car and never again. Whereas to change the oil, a regular task, you have to crawl under the car and undo a bolt allowing hot carcinogenic oil to cascade over your hands? The regular service on a petrol car could easily be made no more dirty or difficult than filling it with petrol. The "spin-on" filter was specifically designed to make it possible to change the oil filter without tools and without getting dirty and if it was properly located as the designer intended (upright at the front and top of the engine) it would be. Instead they intentionally put them sideways and low, so they spill oil everywhere. Dealers, quite rightly, see electric vehicles as a threat to their business. Is it any wonder that Tesla has gone to a "no dealers" selling model? Look at Nissan, there are numerous stories of Nissan dealers refusing to charge any EV including Nissans despite having the charging equipment already on hand. Dealers should be falling over themselves to offer charges. What business wouldn't want proven purchasers to spend an idle half an hour stuck in their on their premises with nothing to do but look at product? They know that EV's are a threat and that's why they hate them. Other businesses like cafes and supermarkets actually spend money to put in chargers to attract customers.

+Ad van der Meer: I see plug-in hybrids like that as a much more efficient way to reduce pollution and CO2 emissions, given a a limited battery production capability, than pure electric cars like tesla. They make better use of existing infrastructure. In your example, it seems that w/o plug-in hybrids the costumer would go out of the dealer with a pure ICE car. Plug-in hybrids ease that transition for the dealer, and also teach the consumer what he can do with a given electric range, charging places, etc, in a much gentler way. When consumers experience the quietness and instant torque of electric motors, they will not want to go back. So It may speed up rather than slow down EVs adoption.

+Ad van der Meer Sadly although the engineers at VW are focussed and dedicated to developing viable EV's the dealerships are nothing short of actively hostile and opposed to the idea. VW have really got their work cut out to counter this. My sister went to a big VW dealers and asked if she could test drive the e-UP. She was told quite openly 'there's no demand for them because they don't work.' WTF, that was a man whose job it is to sell VW's. So +gasdive above is correct, EV's represent a direct challenge to the old models of car distribution and after sales income.

+fullychargedshow I've visited and tested more than a few dealership and agree that many dealers don't want to sell EV's. My Zoe has now been serviced 2 times for less than half of what one regular ICE service would cost. The lack of advertising for many EV's shows that the dislike for EV's goes further up the chain. Also, the "sales pitch" by the salesmen is too similar not to come from a common source. Today on Dutch radio I've heard a Porsche PR manager dampening expections on the new EV they claim to prepare for the market. I am not buying their story, but I wish / hope I am wrong.

1225KPH "IF YOU'RE SO DAMNED SMART, SHOW THE DEALERS HOW TO SELL EVs" I'm not Bobby, but I can give you some ideas. Dos and Don'ts Do sell them from every dealership. Do have charging at every dealership to enable long distance travel Here's a link to dealers who sell Leaf in Australia. The red ones are allowed to sell Leafs the grey ones are Nissan dealers who aren't allowed to even order one in, nor do they have charging. You'll need to zoom out. You can see that there is a small blob of dealers who are all next door to each other who can sell them, long distance travel is impossible and if I wanted to buy one from where I live, I wouldn't be able to drive it home. Most of Australia is covered in grey with very few gaps of more than 100 km. www.nissan.com.au/Find-a-dealer?dealerID=2300&state=NSW&suburb=Hamilton&name=Kloster%20Nissan Do tell your sales staff that the product exists. A friend of mine became a salesperson at the local Nissan Dealership. After she'd been there about 6 months I asked her if she'd sold any Leafs and she said she had *never heard* of them. Don't believe that if it doesn't suit some people it can't suit anyone. Nissan build buses, trucks, micro cars, giant 4WD sedans and sports cars. None of these cars suit everyone, all of these cars suit someone. Do try to think of what sort of person a Leaf would suit. Do they drive off road? Not them. Tow a caravan? Not them. Commute more than 20 and less than 50 km to work every day? Bingo. Are a one of a couple? Bingo. Need to park in a city? Bingo. Like to use transit lanes? Bingo (in some places). Typical example, a friend of mine bought a VW diesel to compliment his other car and bikes because the salesman said it would pay for itself in fuel savings. He commutes 35 km to work and 35 home and has 10 kW of solar on his house. He gets home at 3pm every day and could have charged for free. He could have bought a Leaf and saved a tonne of money and time spent filling at the servo, but you *can't buy one* in this town.

Given that you seem to have some sort of 'in' with the manufacturers now, can you tell us what the likes of Nissan are going to do when new battery technology comes around? Apparently the Leaf coming out in Dec will have a nominal 150 mile range--probably 130-135 mi in the real world. Will Nissan offer a 'battery upgrade' to existing customers? Tho 2017 model is rumoured to have a 200 mile range, and that of course will be a game changer. At that point, I suspect that most manufacturers will probably get out of the plug in hybrid market--they must cost more to manufacture and so will be more expensive to buy. Finally--sorry to rabbit on--is it your opinion that the major manufacturers are trying to 'soften up' the car buying public by introducing hybrid models that give the range most people think they need?

I'm very proud not to be a car fan, so I read your comment with pride. The automotive marketing that went around the variations on one particular model is SO dated and pointless and appeals to a minuscule sector of the car buying/leasing public. It is aimed very specifically at men, and if you have the GT or the M series, basically the same car with some tinkering to the ludicrously inefficient combustion engine, and you ad an 'i' at the end of the numbers and letters glued to the back of the car. Some men notice. I am proud to no longer be one of those men.

Devil's advocate comment: Is the significant foray into PHEV (petrol-electric hybrids) primarily a method of avoiding income tax? Discuss.! Petrol you pay 60% tax at UK pumps or something? Electric plugged in at home, it's 8% energy tax. One charge, gets a hybrid say 1.5 gallons worth of distance, so that's 9 quid and perhaps 60 miles max. Petrol tax on that is £5.50 gbp. 'Electric energy tax' from your 13 amp home mains supply, is whatever 8% of 10kWh is - might be 8% of a quid or something? Ie 8 pence. Er, that's a shortfall of a hell of a lot of tax for the taxman. Plus, if domestic energy tax was introduced specifically for electric vehicle reasons, we are all paying, for the few to benefit. Govt hasn't said, but we might suspect the timing fits, with Nissan ploughing on early doors, with it's electric offerings at that time?!
