Regarding just changing the hex key as opposed to the drive unit. Basically if the key is slightly worn a new key gives you a decent life of use. If the key is really bad then a new key is likely to wear quickly again. Its your choice!

The key is what wears because of the surface area contact pint being small. So a new key is going to last as long again. Yes you can uprate the pump but this is a good fix and cheap to do only 16 quid for new hex key and oil change after. No brainer or engine repalcement you decide.?!!!?

@@LAW-fv6ys £16 quid for new pump are you off your head mate? £600 for conversation kit its not a easy quick job. £16 for a key maybe but you still have to drop the sump and install it which isn't easy without a ramp. Also yeah you'd need full oil top up and filter.

Hi, is there a noise when the hex key starts to round off? I have a 2012 Passat TDI that has a rattle on startup, it sounds like a timing chain rattle but there is no timing chain. It only rattles for a couple of seconds when starting. Thanks. Note the vehicle has only done 100,000km

No, no noises I am afraid. But the rattle could be from the tappets which might indicate low oil pressure at the cylinder head/camshafts.

@@bobbysplace7993 thanks, according to Volkswagen dealers going by my VIN number it is gear driven not chain and that’s what is so confusing. Took it to a VW specialist and he agree’s it sounds like a timing chain rattle. If the balance shaft assembly needs replacing we don’t want to spend what sounds about 5k. Plus to pull it apart the oil pump & or balance shaft assembly have to come from Germany & I’m in Australia so the car would be out of action for weeks.

Hi Bobby, so today I had a light flashing... Refilled with oil as it was showing oil level on minimum, started the engine and red oil pressure light was still flashing and what i did was ... Wait... I drove 2 miles before i stopped🥴 I heard some sound coming from the engine and thats why I stopped and called for the breakdown. Now my car is in the garage till tomorrow waiting for them to check. I just thought is there any chance my engine is not knackered? I spent 500 quid already few moths back so any bigger then that would be too much. Thanks for reading this long message 😁👌

Well if you spun the hex key in the pump and kept driving in high rpms you might of sufferd an oil stavation and have damaged internals in the engine. The first thing to go is the turbo, the second weak point in the PD engine drivetrain are the camshafts, they are prone to a premature wear regardless. Fingers crossed for something small.

For a peace of mind, better drop the sump and change the key. If the car have history check for turbo change/repair or camshafts change. Because the lack of oil pressure destroys the turbo and the camshafts.
