This was explained in an excellent format!.....Thank you for doing it right. John Costa and the others were a waste of time.

Great vid, just came from a completed job. 4 valves were a little tight, the others were fine, new gaskets, old ones were in sections, no wonder it was leaking. Did my gas lines and new plugs too. Thanks much!

Many years ago when I used to adjust my valves I would have a 4, 6 and 8 feeler gauge to ensure that I could feel the gap was right. I always did my valves first thing inn the morning with the engine cold. 6 Inlet and Exhaust as tight valves run very hot! Thank goodness for hydraulic tappets!!

Thanks so much. You've really helped me out. I'm out in Oregon where there's a big VW industry, but all the guys know it and charge a bundle. These cars aren't that complicated; I just needed to see someone do it to make sure I was doing it right. So much for Dads that don't know sh@t about working on cars.

Perfection. That IS the way it is done. Watch out for other incorrect vids on youtube. This is the one to watch. Long live the aircooled VW. And Betty, my 69 bus. :)

Really glad that i saw your video, another video that i watched was adjusting all the vaves at once and rotating the engine 360 degrees. YOUR IS THE CORRECT WAY TO DO IT AGAIN THANKS!......(WARNING IF YOU HAVE WATCHED THE VIDEO BY John @ Costa Mesa R&D Automotive Machine) DON'T DO IT!!! GO BY THIS VIDEO BY AIRHEAD PARTS

I like the cross-check with the distributor to find TDC. You never know who assembled the engine and what type of changes were made.

to pop the valve covers off I use a pair of channel locks and inset in the center of the bail and rotate down, easy way to remove covers without damage! Prior to installing covers I apply a thin coat of universal grease the the gasket surfaces, this will future removal a snap without tearing the gaskets so they can be reused!

always remove the feeler gauge when tightening the valve bolt. It's said that it can pinch it and mess up the feeler gauge.

If you distributor drive gear was installed 180 degrees off, your rotor will point towards the Front driver's side of the vehicle not the rear passenger side. This happens when whoever rebuilt the motor installed the distributor drive gear 180 off..No big deal, just not standard.

@battisa It's not that critical. A few degrees one way or the other and the valves are still closed. That's what it's all about, and it's TDC not tic. TOP DEAD CENTER.

Great video, I remember Rodney from when he lived and worked down in the desert years and years ago. So question, what problem to I have when I back an adjuster all the way out and the the rocker is still tight, and I can't even get my thinnest feeler blade in there? Thanks in advance.

This honestly doesn't look too hard to do. Im not mechanic by any means but as long as you have the tools and make sure they are spaced out 0.006 in between the valves, any average joe can do it! Does the 0.006 go for all engines? Im pretty sure my 72 is a 1600cc engine but im just asking...

isn"t it much easier to look at the marks on the pulley and the case? and on some engines aren"t timed on tic they might be at 7,5 dergrees before or after...so when you look at the distributor it could be 7,5 degrees before tic am right?
