The video was great! thanks. I suggest changing the title from messanging to messaging (no "n"), might make it easier or people looking or those search words.

@BGAndrea there is a learning curve with everything.. is it hard to operate this radio? Nope. Does it take some time to read the manual and set things up? Yes. I love the radio and now that I use it regularly I dont need to reference the manual for the things i do now so id say once you get it down.. its fairly easy to use. btw congratulations on the Tech license!

I belive that "Space" is under 0 (Radio) pres it once for "0" and again for " " and then if you press "Mode, it'll leave a blank space. I hope that I havn't repeated what somebody has told you this as I've not seen all the Comments.

@chelloplayer128 The dash and number are just used as an indentifyer. Example -7 is portal. -9 is mobile and there are a few more, those are the only two i use tho.

@cmritchie04 It would only send to the K2FR callsign, If one of my radios was setup and APRS'ing as just K2FR, id get the message there. I dont know of any way to broadcast to any radio by that callsign, might be a neat feature tho.

It might not be a bad idea to explain how to turn the modem on/off for APRS. Also, to get a space in-between characters just hit the 0(zero) key twice.

Nice video, clearly done. But, you know, the whole, laborious APRS process, and the slow data entry does show us why it's so difficult to attract kids to the hobby. It needn't be like wading through treacle, yet that's what we've got.

I have a question what about hooking up the VX-8DR or GR for the purpose of using the HT as a packet node or tracking other APRS stations? What software do you suggest and what cable would be needed?

Question - the APRS message says who the message is to, but does it say who it is from? Should you put your callsign at the end of the text message??
@ShootingAugust

+Nathan JR (CheeseOverdose) , there is a menu option when you set up your APRS modem. This video goes through sending JUST the text message. There are a few other settings to work out as well, APRS frequency, baud rate, digipath (how far the repeaters should broadcast), etc. You go to the APRS station list, hold the menu button to enter the APRS settings, then set your callsign and SSID (if desired). This probably stays the same throughout the lifetime of the radio. (Unless you sell it later.)

Hello: Great Video! Do you know if there's an app to run APRS from your radio via Bluetooth to a phone or tablet, allowing simpler message entry? Thanks, in advance. Robert 8P6RC

im so new to this. are these able to police scan and be a cb/ two way radio all in one?
@lvennard
10 жыл бұрын
it can scan some channels, but thats not its main purpose. you didnt know this when you asked because you are new, but ham radio folks do not like talking about cb radio in their forums or topics they post. it might be best to not mention it again. i havent read the manual, but i highly doubt that it transmits on 11 meter (the cb band)
@K2FR
10 жыл бұрын
It's not an all in one radio. They can scan frequencies that some municipalities still use but for the most part they are all digital encrypted now. And you can speak about CB's all you want, don't pay attention to people who look down on it.

+Nick MANTRA It depends with ham radios. This particular radio is one that I have, and one of my favorites. It can absolutely receive on CB, police, as well as all short wave frequencies! It can also receive down to the MW range and way up to the UHF range (FM and AM). It only transmits on these ham bands: 6 meters, 2 meters, 1.25 meters and 70cm.

I’m new to aprs. What does the -7 mean?
@K2FR

Its just to note what type of aprs setup you are running. -7 is for a portable -8 if for marine, -9 is for mobile etc etc. Different information can be found on the APRS.org site.
