The question Criswell was answering (omitted in the video) wasn't about race or civil rights, but concerned MLK's outspoken opposition to the Viet Nam war. From Christianity Today, January 12, 2024, web edition: "King, as a pacifist and Christian socialist who was often critical of the US government, opposed the Vietnam War and engaged in a campaign of nonviolent civil disobedience-a campaign that Christianity Today and Billy Graham denounced. They believed it would potentially undermine America’s anti-communist mission and thought that it violated the New Testament’s requirement for Christians to submit to governing authorities." Criswell's remarks are better understood in that context.

Hate to say it, but this was the "times." He repented of his racism long before he died.

WA Criswell was not a racist.........you have no idea what you are talking about. Read his autobiography "Standing on the Promises" he lived, and preached "Jesus Loves me, this I know for the Bible tells me so" "Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world, read and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight"

Yes, this was indeed "the times" in which some men of the cloth supported the equal rights of all Americans, and this one chose to oppose the equal rights of all Americans. On 1968 he finally relented and allowed Black people into his church, but did not apologize for his staunch support of racial segregation.
