And no, Mao did jackshit. I have actual relatives in China. My grand-uncle was (perhaps he still is) an actual member of the Communist Party. I can say with a great deal of certainty that you have no idea what you're talking about. The "capitalist roader" reforms of Deng Xiaoping did far more to alleviate poverty. than wh atever the fuck Mao did, which is kind of ironic when you think about it. And as for hunger, once again you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. It wasn't Mao who tackled poverty and hunger (fucking hilarious when you consider he's the chief architect of the Great Chinese Famine), it was the free market capitalists who succeeded him.

@História com Fradinho For context here, I am a American History graduate: The famine was not caused by Mao, it was a difficult time for everyone in China after the Civil war and WW2, mistakes were made sure, however Mao genuinely cared about the people and set the foundation that is modern China. The amount of dead is greatly exaggerated by western propaganda in various dishonest and manipulative ways, counting all the deaths of the civil war and WW2 as "caused by communism" going even further to claim lower birthrates counted as deaths. In reality tens of millions died in WW2 and the civil war due to brutal fighting, famine and disease, then more died in another famine shortly after Mao took power, not caused by them but as a result of China being a poor nation in ruins, destroyed by war. Notice after this famine, China was still communist but no more famines ever happened again, after China was rebuilt and continued to improve. The truth is western countries spread lots of dishonest propaganda about Mao and China and Stalin and the USSR because they were deeply afraid of communism, because it meant the Rich ruling class would loose their wealth and their power if communism continued to spread. It had little to do with what was true, and more to do with retaining control. The great leap forward is different and complicated. The death toll isn't in the millions as exaggerated by propaganda but there was many thousands that should not have died. There was successes and failures in the cultural revolution, but overall even among most communists today it is considered more of a failure. Things like the destruction of religious monuments and Chinese cultural sights is terrible and shouldn't have happened. There was also widespread violence directed at establishment types, those the Chinese people saw as enemies of the poor working class factory workers and farmers, so establishment intelligencia and land lords. It is really important here to point out that Mao never ordered people to go out murdering land lords for instance, he wanted them stripped of their power and wealth but not killed en masse. In fact Mao gave direct orders for his red guards to stand down and stop the killings. This was a result of a population of people worked into a fervor acting on their own, not the government directly guiding them, so Mao can't take the blame the way Hitler can when Hitler was directly ordering the mass murder of civilians. It's important to understand the difference here. In summary Mao was a great historical figure, his life story is incredible. He cared deeply about the poor working class people of China and wanted to improve peoples lives. He was a incredible military leader that will be remembered among the greatest leaders in world history. Big mistakes were made during his rule, he was not a perfect person, and it's totally valid to criticize decisions he made as wrong while also accepting the good he did. Mao himself advocated for criticism, for discourse and for people not to accept ideas without thinking. He will be remembered as one of the most important figures of the 20th century if not the most important, and he will still be talked about and discussed 1,000 years from now.

@@chindit6784 To the contrary, the entire claims of death tolls of Mao cited by the west are not taking seriously by any reputable historians. In-fact that insane claims like 30 million+ come from the infamous piece of propaganda known as "the black book of communism." While millions did die in China during the 1930s-1950s these deaths were the result of the Japanese invasion and WW2, famine, and the Civil war, To claim these deaths are all caused by "communism" is pure propaganda and dishonest. You also claim that Mao did incite and encourage indiscriminate violence, go ahead and provide a source for that, provide any direct quotes of Mao or orders he provided that support this (you can't and you won't) Because in reality Mao actually put forward orders directly to the red guard to *stop* the indiscriminate killings going on targeted at land lords and other ruling class people. You have nothing to prove your claims other than repeating cold war propaganda.

The revolution failed after maos death and we cant deny that the cult of personality played a role in that. The roaders used maos legacy to really do whatever the fuck they wanted to and profit off of the people. One mistake of the revolution was the emphasis on mao the figure and not his ideas of revolution which catapulted china to heights unheard of in the 50s and 60s. Mad respect not to just chairman mao but to the millions of people who fought for genuine liberation from imperialist tyranny and the tyranny of the capitalist order. Deng was a fucking idiot but China still has hope. It all depends on its next few leaders

Or maybe communism didn't fucking work and the rightists were right. The CCP needs Mao the figure to stay in power, Mao's revolutions in the 50s and 60s are a embarassment to China. Millions of people were fooled by chairman Mao and starved to death or tortured. Mao's China was a third-world country , Deng's market reforms made it a powerhouse.

China, though, didn't deserve a failed economy and massive poverty even above most African countries.

Teerth Aloke, what are you speaking of? Standards have dramatically worsened after Xiaoping's reforms. Material wealth means jackshit if your people are kept in oppresive poverty- as with modern China. Thankfully, the people oncemore are fighting for themselves. Labour movements are upheld by those workers who are able to project their voice. At the very least, they will be able to terminate U.S. control over their freedom.
