One thing I want to point out is that Taiwan has as many political fights as in U.S. Intensity is no less, but a major difference is that the fights amongst the politicians in Taiwan are more uncivilized compared to U.S.

My mother tongue is Taiwanese and I can recall the process of my learning Mandarin and English very clearly. Compared to English, learning Mandarin is very very easy. At the age of 5, my father began to teach me how to speak and write in Mandarin and he was really strict with me. Within 2 years, I could listen, read, write and speak in Mandarin. Political issues are one of the most serious problems in Taiwan. About 50 % of the people here are pro democratic camp while another 20 % are pro ccp. With ccp and fifty cents involvement, you can see one side attacks the other side severely online. In fact Taiwan is a spilt bipolar society. Wish you a happy thanksgiving day.

Yes. You're right about the political scenario in Taiwan. The Chinese languages are, as a matter of fact, very easy. No verb tense, no inflection, no declension, ..., etc.. A lot of people hold such a misconception that the tonal system in all the Chinese languages makes Chinese the most difficult language in the world. Because there are so many homonyms in Chinese languages, tones play the exclusive part in distinguishing word meanings. I think something has gone wrong with the process in foreigners' acquisition of Chinese Mandarin, Taiwanese, Hakka, or Cantonese. They probably wish to predict the precise occurrence of different tones which are arbitrary because they are part of each different vocabulary word. In other words, when learning Chinese, simply remember a specific tone along with each word you learn and you'll be fine.
No doubt the democracy is the main trend of Taiwanese society, however due to the historical remains, there is still a serious identity issue in Taiwan. Pretty much like in the early USA.Some people were still loyal to the King
