Kpop agencies took in less and less Chinese members but more and more Japanese members as well as ethnic Koreans from western countries because they realise that they don't have to rely on China market to make profits, especially with the global success of BTS and Blackpink and there will be no political controversy. Japan and US actually buy a lot of albums and support a lot of concerts as well. ETA: What I notice from survival show is that Koreans actually support Chinese idols as long as they fit Korean visual standards and are tall. This is something that Japanese idols lose out because they are usually quite short and not as good looking. As for Thai/Southeast Asian idols, they don't really fit Korean visual standard as they usually are more tanned and look tribal/indigenous/aboriginal and quite short and they are perceived as being from third world countries. This is also how they are perceived in China.

Beg to differ, Japanese idols like Sana, Mina, Momo, Rei and Giselle all have better visual and stand out comparing to so-called Chinese idols, maybe except Ningning for her significant change over the past few years, I always feel that most of the Chinese idols are like cheap knockoffs, especially those who are currently based in Chinese showbiz, you probably know who I’m trying to say. That being said, I don’t get overly attached to Chinese idols for their political affiliation.
