Do you remember what happened to Mick Foley v Undertaker in Hell in a Cell when he fell through the top? THAT was real and it was UNSCRIPTED. lol. And look at the damage he took. The man almost died, quite literally. He NEARLY missed the spot being thrown off the top and that almost did him in. The Undertaker thought he WAS dead for a moment. The fact he was able to continue the match is nothing short of a miracle. Regardless it still takes A LOT of skill to pull of wrestling matches.

One of my self defense instructors was also a wrestling coach. One of his students became a successful pro wrestling heel, and try as he might, he couldn't convince his mom that the wrestler he trained was actually a nice guy and nothing like the character he portrayed in the ring. He always called pro wrestling "rassling," and people asked him why, he would answer "Because it isn't wrestling." Even so, I remember some former pro wrestlers were competing on "Family Feud" to raise money for a charity that funded medical care (especially orthopedic care) for injured pro wrestlers, and they admitted the wrestling was staged but said that the strain and the impacts from falling/being thrown does a lot of damage to the joints (as Sylvester Stallone said about stunt fighting in the commentary track for "The Expendables": "You cannot fake gravity!"). I can relate to that because I started my martial arts training in judo but switched to kenpo karate after I blew out my knee. Even Chuck Norris switched his emphasis to Tang Soo Do because of a judo knee injury.

South Park is pointing out that WWE type wrestling is basically a soap opera (geared towards men) and yes the action you're seeing is rehearsed, but they're not faking the acrobatics. It takes real physicality to do what they do and it's hell on their bodies. Enjoying wrestling is no different from enjoying a fight scene in an action movie. We all know they're not really fighting, but the performance is fun to watch.

When I was a kid I was 100% sure that WWE was real. My friends and I watched the fights, played the yearly video game to death and we all had our favorite wrestlers. Mine at the time was probably The Undertaker. When I grew a bit older I realized that probably not all of it was real, but was still convinced most of it was, due to the insane casualties they had over the years. Then one day I saw a documentary about wrestling and found out how it was made, but rather than being disappointed I actually gained a newfound respect for it. People tend to think that wrestling is fake, full stop, but it's actually way more complex than that. I think the best way I can describe it is that the wrestlers are extremely skilled improv-stuntmen. They know the moves, they develop their story, but they often actually don't know much of what is actually going to happen when they take the stage. They might know who is supposed to win or who interferes with who, but sometimes they don't. Rather they discover it though developing the fight together. And it's also very important to say that they actually do take hits, but due to their skill and trust in each other, it usually doesn't hurt the way a hit like that would. This is also why it looks relatively real, because the hit connects, but due to their training it doesn't hurt that much. So yes, FAKE in the sense that they are not trying to hurt each other (very much), but REAL in the sense that they are improvising a fight using restricted moves that isn't mean to incapacitate. Also the blood is often real and is called blading. When they take a hard enough fake hit with a chair or the like, they actually have a small blade hidden on them so they can cut their forehead slightly for it to appear as though the hit drew blood. They are 100% actually cutting their forehead though. The reason they do it in the forehead is because you have fewer nerves there and it heals easier. Not to mention the insane falls and dives they sometimes make, where they "fall" or jump from heights equal to jumping out of a first store window. I probably don't have to tell you the amount of skill and courage it takes to make a dive like that onto another person lying on a breakable table, or to hit the floor for that matter. XD

I have to start this with…I’m 33 and haven’t watched wrestling since middle school. I was never a big fan and I’m an even less of a fan now. BUT Yes, wrestling is fake and scripted but that doesn’t mean it’s not physical and accidents/injuries don’t happen. I think a great “one off” reaction video of you two watching “The Undertaker” and “Mankind” reminisce about their “Hell in a Cell” match would be awesome. Even if you don’t like wrestling, YOU WILL BE LEFT IN AWE! It is one of the most insane unbelievable live performances of the century.

WWE and other wrestling of that type are basically live serialized theatre and were never meant to be a sporting competition. I always find people who say "it's fake" really annoying. I get that people don't like the word fake because wrestling itself is physically incredibly demanding but you also cannot say it's real either. They don't try to hurt each other when they punch, kick or throw people. That's the whole art of the sport. Maybe it depends on how you define real in that context. They don't really fight each other but they still really get hurt.

Saying it's fake is using the wrong term. It's staged with a lot of choreography moves, rehearsed many times. But still, like anything physical, there's always a risk of injury. And sure, getting slammed on the ring might be minimal pain, but over and over, it adds up. There is also the factor that some wrestlers suck at working well with others. For instance, the ultimate warrior. He was too rough, and nobody liked working with him, even when they had to.

It don’t like when people say wrestling is fake yes it’s choreographed and yes it’s already decided who’s going to win the match but the men and women who step into the ring are putting their bodies on the line the wrestling part is real it takes months and years to train to be a wrestler and it’s super dangerous if you’re not probably trained or if something goes wrong in the ring you can literally kill somebody accidentally by performing the wrong wrestling move it’s not easy I feel like only wrestlers will understand other wrestlers or people who have been in the ring I just don’t like when people say the wrestling part is fake that’s disrespectful.

It helps to think of pro-wrestling as "staged" rather than "fake". It's a succession of soap operatic theater performances with HIGH-impact motions. It certainly isn't fake with regards to what the performers put themselves thru, and if you want to predict where things will go, it's better to think of the narrative and marketing rather than actual physical prowess.

Once you know who everybody is then you can look at storylines. But if you only look at wrestling from the point of view of it being 100% real then you will never get it.

I hope you'll be able to keep doing the SP reactions. Also, you Patreon promotion makes me really eager to see your reaction to "Raisins" (has my favorite Butters speech towards the end) and "The Losing Edge" (a pivotal evolution of Randy episode).

Most people who "can't get into" wrestling are the kind who take themselves too seriously, like do you also think people need to hear that plays, movies, etc are also staged/"fake"? Ironically, people who can't get into take it more seriously than actual fans do - they just play along, cheering, booing, etc, which is what you're supposed to do, you silly geese🦢🦢 Basically, "Wrasling" is live action anime, with power ups, special moves, etc, try having fun, since that's the point😋

Or maybe they just don't get it or like it? No offense, but you don't need to be that defensive just because people don't like something that you do. Just taking your examples, some people like plays but not movies and vice versa. So what? I get if you love wrestling and think people bash it unfairly, though. I totally understand what you mean by people whose only complaint is that it's "fake." I understand you feel like that's a silly complaint since we all watch and read fiction for entertainment. That's a fair point, but at the end of the day, some people don't like whole genres of fiction because it's just not their cup of tea, so some people are just not going to care for the story lines in wrestling, or the physical spectacle. I hate it when people bash others for what they like, but it almost feels like you're doing something similar when you label people as "taking themselves too seriously," just because they don't like wrestling. I'm a complete goofball that takes nothing seriously, and I don't really like wrestling. I literally watch horrible movies on purpose for entertainment. Perhaps you think that's silly and can't understand how someone could be entertained by that sort of thing. But I would never assume that means something negative about you just because you have different tastes than I do. I used to watch wrestling back in the early 80s when I was a kid, and probably up until the early 90s. I believe it was actually less serious and more wacky back then. Any time I've tried watching modern wrestling, it just doesn't appeal to me. Maybe I'm just not catching the good stuff?

I've never been a die-hard pro-wrestling fan, but I do watch it from time to time. The way I see it, it is like us movie fans who get personally investing in watching a fight or stunt on-screen and we root for the characters and feel the pain ourselves when the heroes get hit and we want to know what happens next, even though we all know the hero eventually wins in the end. But, ultimately, the whole movie was scripted and the fights well-choreographed (but still using actual fighting moves) and safety harnesses were used during stunts. It does not change our enjoyment of the movie, however. Stunts and choreographed fights, however, still lead to actors or stuntmen getting seriously injured sometimes and even dead.

Why do people always feel the need to point out that "wrestling is fake"? Stating the obvious doesn’t make you look clever. It’s like saying, "Did you know Hollywood movies aren’t actually real?"

speaking as a wrestling fan, its scripted but its not fake, the injuries are real and they can suffer from concussions if a wrestling move can go completely wrong. i'm just saying but this episode always cracks me up

Pro wrestling is awesome. No one thinks its real. Its called suspension of disbelief. You know, the same thing you have to do when watching movies or tv shows, or main stream news.
