I've installed three different types of LED in my C126 instrument cluster over a few years, all of them obtained from MercedesSource (Kent Bergsma). The first set were warm white (I loathe bluish lights anywhere!), but one needed to get the polarity right. My second set (also warm white) were polarity agnostic - so far less futzing around getting them functioning. Now I have Kent's latest (5th generation): also polarity agnostic, but amber/orange - a far more preferable colour. Kent currently supplies cool white, warm white, amber/orange, and red LEDs for instruments. Of course none of those will be of much use if the plastic light "channels" are melted, which often happens because people instal higher-wattage incandescents - a major problem and a PITA to fix (easier to find an unburned/unmelted instrument cluster).

Didn't put the LEDs in. But used this video to replace the globes without taking cluster out. The lights are so dim hough through the dash. They are 5 watt. Will the LED make the dash brighter? Great video again

Hi, I’m not sure if you still look at these comments but my odometer and trip meter are both broken because the plastic gears inside have broken. When I remove the cluster, someone else mentioned that if I unplug everything, it will affect the clock. Must I disconnect the battery and then remove my cluster and unplug the wires first? Thank you
@straybenzes

It is a good idea to disconnect the battery before removing the cluster; And yes, you do need to take the single power wire off the back of the clock also. No big deal though; you will need to adjust the clock once you power it back up. Good luck!

@@straybenzes thank you! are the wires easy to disconnect and reconnect afterward? I’ve never done this before so I hope I can memorize where each wire plug goes when it’s time to plug everything back in.

@@sonny1234thebig The round plug connected to the lift part of the cluster is a beast to pull. Easy to push back on. Don't forget about the little vaccum tube for the economy gauge. The light bulb holders for all of the warning lights can be confusing to put back in place. Thankfully they are all numbered. Extend the steering wheel all the way out.

There are only two in this instrument cluster and they are both T10s. Check out the location at 3.22 and 3.26min in this video for the location. Good luck.

Oh that is difficult to diagnose from afar. It could be the fuel pressure accumulator if this happens if the engine was hot. If this happens with a cold motor then I would say it could be anything from the EHA, the idle mixture, or the cold start fuel injection needing adjustment or fixed.

Please tell everyone to disconnect the battery before doing this. If the power wire for the clock comes off and touches anywhere on the back of the cluster you will need a whole new cluster

Hi On my W126 380 SEL when I start the car, idle in speedometer goes right to the other side at 160 and stays there. Goes back then to zero when I switch car off. So it doesn’t read the speed only 160 mph all the time. Any idea how to fix this ? Thank you very much in advance for any piece of information. Patrik

There are four three key connections / devices that can cause this. There is the speed transmitter on the rear LH side of the transmission. You can disconnect that and see if the speedometer is staying at 0 when you power it up. Hard to believe that that transmitter went bad, but crazier things have happened. Then it can also be your cruise control amplifier located under the driver side dashboard near the steering column. Does the cruise control work? Perhaps start there disconnecting it as you do not have to work under the car to get to the transmission. Last but not least it could be the ground connection within the instrument cluster. With the cluster removed you can add a temporary ground wire to the common ground connection of the back of the cluster. If everything else in it works this is a little less likely that this is the trouble. Good luck!

@@straybenzes Hi Ralph thank you for your feedback on speedometer not working for me. I will try to tackle all the issues you have listed . When I pulled instrument cluster out , the flat 8 pin plug connector directly connected to speedometer was badly seezzed up, so off course pulling it out I broke few wires because off the that. So I ordered new plug - it was impossible to find it , ! I hope that could be the couse of speedometer not working properly. It is never easy with those old cars when you fix one think and tree things go wrong. Thanks again for your help.

I never had any bulbs go out on my 85 Benz but my previouse car, a Peugeot, had several and I pulled the cluster out just like you showed. It had a lot of little bulbs in it. It never fit right after that because it was all cheap plastic so had to wedge pieces of match books in the corners to keep it from rattling. Lol P.S. I would not buy Chinese made bulb holders for any car. I had to replace my tail light assemblies on my last car, a Volvo, so got new bulb holders also. The circuit boards had come apart and I could not repair them. The new assemblies were ok but the bulb holders simply did not work. Not made right. To loose. I ended up reusing the original ones. Chinese junk!
