When season 1 was filmed, Sarah was 18, Alysson was 22, Nicholas was 25, and Charisma was 27. This is a phenomenon referred to as Dawson casting; productions have to cast people who aren't underage to play teenagers because of the limited hours minors can work and all the other added conditions: schooling, on-set supervision, love scenes etc.

Especially since Sarah who played Buffy wqs pretty open about how she usually put in 18 hour days. When the show ended, it was entirely because she decided to stop as it just took so much out of her to do. There's no way they could have worked under those conditions with minors around. Especially since the show also had so many day and night shots.

The irony of that is that the Dawson's Creek cast were mostly teenagers when cast in that show, especially Michelle Williams who was only 16. James Van Der Beek was 20 and the oldest to be cast in season 1 of the main characters. In comparison to the Buffy cast they were pretty young.

I love the scene at the end between Buffy and Owen, it rings very earnest and it just breaks my heart to see Buffy have to make such a mature decision, letting go of a boy she likes a lot and who likes her back because she knows it's the right thing to do, *BUT* one small detail that distracts me everytime is that poor lady with the red handbag who's in EVERY SHOT; one moment she's behind Buffy, another she's behind Owen, then she's going up the stairs, then she's walking down the hall. With this being Sunnydale and all, I think she might be stuck in some kind of time loop, I hope someone helps her. x) BTW, I haven't watched the reaction yet, so I can't wait to see if you guys spot her! *Edit:* you didn't!

The thing to remember is, they're still feeling their way, at this point in the series. As they gain confidence in what they're doing, the stories -- and multi-episode arcs -- get more complex and insightful about what it would really be like to try to live this way, while at the same time illustrating some of the really ugly things that people in high school do to one another. The series ramps up, from here, albeit with a few stumbles along the way. :)

Back in the mid-90s, I once had someone just meet me at a club and asked if I would go steal a private plane with him so it's a bit quaint just to have someone ask to go look for a bar fight. This is a fairly decent Season 1 episode. Still fun and campy with not too many cringy moments but still has an iconic line. "If the apocalypse comes, beep me" was my email tagline for a long while. Note: I did not go on the planned plane heist but the guy did leave the bar alone later. No idea if any planes were stolen.

Fair play to you guys, you are without doubt the most enthusiastic reactors ever to S1 of BTVS. The first season was very low budget and erratic as show was finding it's feet. You will notice a massive step up mid way through S2 and as it goes forward it just gets better and better. Great that you have really getting the show after only five episodes. You will love this show as it moves forward. This episode was one of the weaker in S1 basically showing that after all Buffy is just teenage girl, and has all the desires and urges that brings, trying to live that life as normal as possible, but nothing is very simple in The Buffyverse!

Mark 31:11. Well, because Season 1, was completed before it began being broadcast, my guess is that they were really committed to scripts that were written when, "Willow", was to be played by an overweight actress, Riff Regan, from the pilot episode. Loved the reaction. As any fan will tell you, these early episodes can be rough. Keep in mind that they not only running on a reduced budget this season as the show was a quick add in replacement for another show that was cancelled half way through its season, but that the time constraints for the scripts and production were short too. I'm glad you're enjoying the humor and the moments of genuine character generation that happened in between some of the cringier moments. The second half of the season definitely has some really great episodes coming. Also, keep in mind that the finale is really good. You'll notice quite significantly that it's where you can really see that they've worked out many of the bugs in production and is a level above. Still, I think you're really going to like a number of the coming episodes as well.

I agree that the second half is better than the first, but, idk, I feel like S1 is better than ppl give it credit for. I never had to "suffer through it" like others say. I like the campiness and humor of it. and I like that it's different than other seasons. I guess that's just me.
@haddow777
2 жыл бұрын
@@shelbybradley4595 don't get me wrong. I love it too, but I can see it's not for everyone. Some reactors I've seen can get a negative perspective on the show because season 1s campiness isn't there thing. Heck, I've seen some reactors who followed the advice of so called fans who hate season 1 and skipped certain episodes altogether, just hitting the really good ones. I hate that. In every episode I find elements that are building onto the characters, that could end up confusing you later if you skip over. Also, there are always scenes that are really good. It's not all campy humor, but serious parts like at the end, where Buffy and Giles continue to grow into their father daughter relationship. I've also found that some can misconstrue things some because the actors haven't hit their stride yet and because maybe the show didn't have the budget for more takes to get some scenes just right. Like a common comment in the early part of the show is that Giles is being too familiar with Buffy and being a bit creepy. So I like to jump in and just gently remind them that things can sometimes be a bit rough, but to not jump the conclusions. It never makes for a great reaction when reactors come to early conclusions about characters that end up coloring their views of them through the show. I mean, we've all seen how some reactors deal with Joyce. I've seen some reactors learn to hate her right in the pilot episode and it can twist their view of her for a while afterwards. Another thing is the bands that have been playing. We all know that improves quite a bit. Still, they didn't have the money for any big bands yet. So, I do love the season. I'm just putting a few caveats out there to keep the realities of how the show will change in not too long. You have to admit, after hearing Buffy fans rave about how this is one of the best shows ever made, they may credibly think they've been punked a little by this point in the show. Yes, it's good, but not the greatest by any measure yet.

The thing about hiring actual minors as actors, then and now, and the reason it's avoided, is that the Screen Actor's Guild (SAG-AFTRA) contract is incredibly strict with super-lengthy rules about minors, severely limiting the number of hours they're allowed to work per day, the requirement that they undergo hours of schooling while on set, teacher having to be paid for and supplied by the production, etc. It's very expensive to hire a minor on top of whatever the salary is, and then production becomes oriented around when the minor is available. That's why it's a hassle avoided by productions unless they're forced to use genuine minors or are going to use them for a distinctly short and limited time. Because also, they age out of roles super-quickly.
