Now tune your B string to a just instead of equal-tempered major 3rd! That can clean up the dissonance of 3rds played with distortion, and since in open-G you’ll mostly be playing your thirds on that string, the way it throws other things off tends to not matter as much. Also, Rob, get a capo. The ability to change up voicings that use open strings is worth playing around with.

For years i tried to play Jumping Jack Flash in std tuning, by ears, without knowing the GDGBD trick. It worked a bit but i never get the real feel of it. Then some years ago i was introduced to the magic of open tuning... I felt a bit cheated at first, for all my fruitless efforts, but it was an epiphany. What was a bit laborious and didn't sounding exactly alright became easy. If you didn't want to permanently transform your guitar you can also try GGDGBD (already stated by Nigel W on earlier comment) on 6 strings, it also works, but you may want to mute a bit the low G to really sound like Keefe.

Thanks so much, Rob! Like they say, "When the student is ready, the teacher appears". About 20 yrs ago I fell in love with "Orkney" tuning. CGDGCD. The low C string can't go much lower. Perfect for me and my writing. It's my bass. My music is mostly acoustic and tends to use minor a lot. I know now because of your explanation, that if I remove the low E string, then tune down my high C string to B, I'm there with Keith. I'm curious to see how my music will feel. Normal tuning in my case was very limiting. Orkney tuning works for me because I run into new things all the time. It keeps on giving and fits my style. I'm self taught and lazy. This simple tuning addition will be quick and easy to change back and forth from where I always play. I think I'll try keeping the low string on my acoustic and remove it on my electric. Maybe even start recording again and see how this change helps in the mix. I just now subscribed here and I won't be at all surprised when you present us with another gem. Thanks

IMO a low D in open G guitar tuning sounds naff. If I don't want to remove the low E string when playing in open G, I tune that string up to G, so that it's in unison with the A string, which is tuned down to G. The bit about removing the low E makes sense to me. I love death metal (where runnings such as D standard have given way to C# standard, or even A standard on a 7 string), but in a *live* context, it's so easy for every song to end up asa sludgy mix of snare blastbeats, barely distinguishable riff progressions, and invisible bass just reinforcing the root notes.

Appreciate the golden ticket for beginner guitarists, I need it. I think it helps a lot not having to worry about muting that sixth string that you can't really use having a thumb on the back of the neck and a weak tiny finger that leaves just 3 fingers on the neck that have real strength.

He does away with the E in open G but he plays in other tunings as well. I actually thought he was better when he was more exploratory in standard tunings and D and E as well as open G and think he got almost too addicted to open G and the drone and same hammer on. After Exile I think it gets a bit tedious as a go to sometimes though not always. Live he plays some songs origionally in other tunings in G. Jumping Jack Flash I think. Funny how he experimented then just played those songs virtually the same way live for years. In the Jimmy Miller years he was quite experimental - not just with open G - but subsequently less so and often went to open G as a first port of call. He wasn't the first or last to remove a string. I think it was more that while he experimented he couldn't find a place for it that wasn't changing the sound in a way that he found grating - a bit like playing an A or D chord when you hit the E or A string - it is still a chord but the "Inversion" makes it bassy. Even though the E string in open G isn't what people like to call an Inversion - making the bottom note different from the name of the chord, such as playing an A chord with the bottom note as E instead of G - I think he felt it produced that effect and in the beggars banquet and let it bleed era was more about experiment than conventionality so just did away with the string that displeased him - that's not exactly genius.. doing what he did with it and then realising later why it worked and sticking with it for certain songs might be. Sorry for all this waffle and random thoughts. I'm just bored and have been in my own lockdown a while.
