After almost 15 years using our partially earth-sheltered greenhouse these are a few of the reasons that a fully sunk-in earth sheltered greenhouse like a walipini doesn't seem suitable for our goals in this particular climate. Very cloudy winters with goals of garden extension and summer use, NOT winter survival of some fun but non essential crops like citrus or whatever else. We still can overwinter all the greens we want in this in part due to the earth sheltering on all sides and full depth on the east side. 3' down on the south side seems about right for this grade and climate with these goals - could be higher on north wall IF you have a steeper south facing slope much higher. I would ideally have the east wall open as well - this greenhouse is as LITTLE light as works for most summer crops (aside cukes) in this climate. This is all VERY climate and goals specific - i know when those vary walipini's can likely be great. Important to mention that either way retaining walls are expensive and or/not rodent proof or stable. We wanted rodent proof everything because we propagate nut trees in this house (and it helps even for veggie starts too).
