A few decades ago, my father redeveloped a property on 24 Mcnab Street, Paddington. They installed the balustrading from the former Bellevue hotel that once stood on the corner of George and Alice Street in Brisbane city. The hotel was erected in 1885, and demolished in 1979. The balustrading has these distinctive bell shapes laced throughout.

Interesting that this area was once regarded as in need of handouts. Having only lived here 26 years I have only seen it as Yuppieville. Like West end was industrial, re zoned, now expensive. I worked at Bulimba that had industry. Re zoned while I worked there. All apartments now. Rosalie had the bakery for employment. Gone. The trend is to get rid of the working class by getting rid of any industry that they can work in. And replace with high end housing they can't afford. Brisbane is going like London, the domain of the mega rich or 10 in a house sharing the rent. Where there were streets filled with people that worked together and knew each other, now they are full of people that don't know their neighbour. I preferred the old days.

great comment. 👍 brisbane now. like london in the 1970s constructing all those horrible high-rise appartment tower blocks .. and good point about industry. we used to have shoe factories and blanket manufacturers and all sorts of businesses going. now all gone.
@walkaboutwithrob
23 күн бұрын
@davetaylor4741 I don't think it's a case of trying to get rid of the working class by deliberately removing various industries from their area. Most inner-city industries have moved away simply because the land they were on was to small to for them to expand. As businesses grow they often need larger premises, so they simply shift to an area that has more land. Or some businesses are no longer required.

Class just got exponentially increased on this episode 😂 On a more personal note, I flew with an Army aerial survey team which captured the 2011 floods. Anna Bligh was the premier at the time, and was supposed to visit us and award us a commendation. She never came, instead, a public servant came and we gave the Qld 100s of thousands in dollars worth of data (we flew as far North as Bundaberg, and as far west as Miles which is a mining site and didn’t get a drop of rain during the floods). So, if you see aerial flood imagery it’s courtesy of the Army 4 man ADS40 team.

Great tour, thanks Rob and Marianne! Unless I missed it - did you cover Augustus Gregory's 1860s house 'Rainworth', now at 7 Barton Street (and nicely renovated!)? Gregory lobbied for the pipe drainage and filling of the Red Jacket Swamp in the early 1900s. When it was suggested that they name the new park after him, he was horrified, as he considered it was an eyesore. He died a year or two later (1905) and they named it for him anyway
