Thailand has long been called the "Land of Smiles".
The name was originally coined as a slogan for an advertising campaign by the Tourism Authority of Thailand. And the name stuck.
For Thais, this facial gesture serves as a universal communication tool and a way to demonstrate the world-famous Thai friendliness and hospitality.
Thailand is a country where the Buddha and his teachings are revered, 95% of the population.
Therefore, there are about 30,000 Buddhist temples in Thailand.
I have visited some of the most famous temples in Bangkok and share my impressions of this fabulous architecture.
And another interesting thing I learned
About Buddha
Buddhas are enlightened people, there are many of them in history.
The most popular among them is Shakyamuni Buddha, the founder of the teachings of Buddhism. He lived in the 5th or 6th century BC.
According to legend, his ashes after burning were divided into 84 thousand parts and taken by monks all over the world and placed in pagodas.
Why are the Buddha statues exactly like this?
It is considered to be the 32 main signs of the Buddhas, their followers, gods and heavenly kings.
Here are some required details:
- the fingers are connected by webbing
- golden-colored skin
- broad shoulders
- bulge on the head
- shoulder-length earlobes
- eyelashes like a bull's
- the body is massive and straight
- fingers and toes of the same length.
Buddhists believe that after death, each of them will have to be reborn in form of human or animal, depending on their karma - balance of good and evil deeds.
About monks
Apropo! Buddhist monasticism is different from Christian monasticism.
The monk renounce worldly values on the way to nirvana.
To be a monk even a little bit is an honor for every Thai man.
Service life: the whole life, or 3 years, or 3 months, or 3 weeks…
What monks do: they learn the teachings of the Buddha, instruct laypeople, meditate, work in a monastery, funeral services for the dead, eat only what the parishioners bring.
They sleep from 21 to 4 in the morning.
A monk may have: orange-colored clothes, underwear, a begging bowl, a razor, a water filter, a kettle, a rug, a pillow, a mosquito net, a pair of shoes and a bag.
Monks are forbidden: to touch money, work for money, cook their own food, eat yesterday's food, eat in the afternoon, eat meat, drink alcohol, have sex, have hair and eyebrows…
There are monastic universities with undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Bangkok.
So, you have to go - there is something to be surprised and admired in Thailand!
