Once upon a time, a long time ago, in a past life, on a rainy, sunny May afternoon, my daughter and I were sitting on the summer veranda of a café in Blagoevgrad.
It should be noted that May is an incomprehensible month for Bulgarian schoolchildren, if they are not seventh or twelfth graders. State weekends, canceled classes in schools because of exams for 7th and 12th graders. Last year it fell out that one week in May had one school day, and that was Tuesday. So commuters were allowed to skip it :)) Well, but there is a school June.
But I digress, but in essence - we are sitting there, trying different smoothies (by the way, here they are called smoothies) and suddenly we hear some shouting. "One! Two!..."
Young people are walking through the city center in pairs and shouting these numbers. The weather is mysterious, it's dripping or sunny. And they are dressed in long ball gowns, suits, umbrellas do not suit them :))
Later we found out that this is how the graduation balls are held in Bulgaria, here they are called abiturienteski. The balls are held on May 24, when Bulgaria celebrates the Day of National Written Language and Culture.
So, first on the town square awards for success and some other achievements are given. Then - a red carpet, a flower arch, a photo session of graduates. Then - a procession through the city streets to the parking lot.
Car rides, nightclub, disco - and so it goes on for days. Sometimes the graduates go to our neighboring Greece. Since the graduates are already 19 years old, all adults, they implement their ball programs without the participation of parents or teachers, adults. Well, and the whole city our two or three days patiently listening to all the shouting and firecrackers.
You may ask, what's with all the shouting? “The chanter” screams: “And koi kaje...”, and the whole class, walking on the tiles of the sidewalk, amicably chanting: “One! Two!
Three! Four!Pet! Six! Sedem! Osem! Devet! Deset! Edinaiset! Dvanaiset! Go!" And so time after time shouting out the numbers of the school class, of each school year, saying goodbye and farewell to school, leaving their studies in the past.
Most of the gymnasium students of the specialized gymnasiums have by this time already applied to the universities of their choice, they will still have their studies - but they are already students. Not schoolchildren, not gymnasium students.
There are many speeches of gratitude to teachers.
Many adults do not like the idea of such a format of balls, they call them American and a waste of money. But small Bulgaria is very different and human: if your graduate decides to be dressed up, you help him as much as you can, not discourage him because it is not to your liking.
