It took us about a day to get used to San Juan del Sur. Unlike Managua or Granada, this town doesn't have supermarkets but rather small corner grocery stores where the prices of basic commodities are relatively higher due to the fact that customers are mostly North American tourists. Even when you have that in mind, you will most likely not find everything in one place and will have to go to several stores for things like bread, fruit, vegetables, etc. Most people in San Juan have their meals in restaurants, which can add up if you stay there for a longer period of time. Expats who live there hire locals to go shopping for them in Managua.
Our second day in San Juan was completely different: after asking around extensively, we got the hang of it. Even the garbage on the beach was washed away by the tide overnight! We went for a walk on the beach and realized that the other end of the bay is where all the upscale hotels are. We also visited the local municipal market where you can find fresh fruits and vegetables, souvenirs, clothes, etc.
