It’s amazing how bits of “memorabilia can produce a slight adrenaline rush! This ex Great Northern route is so legendary that it makes me want to return...even though I now live in North Yorkshire. This former Railway route needs to be studied and followed. My “connection” began around 1961 when I discovered the Western Portal of Mapperley Tunnel, about 10 minutes walk from our house in Arnold...and this would be another episode!

Ah, there we are, the railway relics that you always come up trumps with!!! Good to see that someone up there has got their history head on - totem signs to show the pathway route and lots of interesting railwayana dotted about. Loving the B & Ws, instant history, shame about the viaduct.

Hiya again, Just wanted to say thanks for up loading another great video, it looks like a brilliant walk to, with lots of nostalgic Railway remains dotted about. I've always had and still have a interest in the GNR Friargate Line, once you finish the whole line and get to the Derby end where the old bonded warehouse is, while your there, look out for the remaining parts of Derby Friargate Railway Station. I was there last year and the council or private contractors where cutting the grass and have now exposed the remains of the platforms and even one of the subway entrances too which is good to see, then of course while your there, don't forget to look at the impressive Derby Friargate Bridge which goes over Ashbourne Road. If you go up towards the Chester Green area of Derby, behind some old factory buildings there's another bridge called Handyside Bridge which is another part of the the friargate line too, after that bit I'm lost lol 😂 as not to sure where it goes from there?? Anyway thanks again for the new video, hope to see you soon. From Mike (In Chesterfield).

I have relatives living in Giltbrook; a few years ago, I was wandering around Kimberley and came across the East station (not knowing then that there were two) and took some pictures of the car park and what looked like the former station buildings. Great walk ... great channel!

Just come across your video - very interesting. My father was the Station Master at Newthorpe and Greasley station between 1951-56 between 40 bridges and Eastwood on the GN branch to Pinxton. The site is under the A610 where Newmanleys Lane meets the carriageway towards Nottingham. We lived in the station house directly on the platform - the up line towards Nottingham. The platforms were staggered and connected by a footbridge. Newmanleys Lane bridged the lines and led to Shipley Gate on the Midland line. That station closed in the late 1940s I think. My uncle was the captain of Nutbrook Cricket club which played behind the Shipley Boat Inn (now MFN?). One of my delights on the station was to open the wicker basket containing racing pigeons. There was a siding at the rear of the station leading to a wireworks and a weekly train containing springs went to Fords at Dagenham for use in car seats. Happy days!

Wonderful. For someone who lived in Ilkeston (1954-1972) and Kimberley (1984-1993) absolutely wonderful. I do recall travelling on this line from Ilkeston North to Nottingham Vic, Grantham (to train spot) and Skegness and once in the other direction to Friar Gate but obviously I was under 10 years old but great memories. Unfortunately whilst in Kimberley work & family life prevented exploration but having seen the video I will be back to explore. Thank you.

Many thanks for a very nostalgic stroll from my childhood days when I lived on Main Street, Awsworth during the war through 1951/2. My Dad worked at Ilkeston Junction, Bennerley Sidings and Toton Yard. I spent many happy days on Awsworth Station, the porters in 1948/50 were called Bill and Llew and they allowed me access to the ticket office in exchange for weeding the garden beds, watering the plants in summer and brushing the platforms. A perfect childhood when you realise that Forty Bridges, Awsworth Station and Bennerley Viaduct were about 10 minutes walk from my house ?

It's an absolute pleasure to be able to rekindle some memories for you, this makes me very happy. Bennerley sidings has such a rich history, the iron works, the coal plant and of course the viaduct. I'll be back on this line very soon to continue the journey. Thank you so much 😊

@trekking and towpaths Hi, that was a lovely journey along the Great Northern Railway Path, Kimberley East is in great condition, and those relics of the past as you walk along must have been a lovely surprise when you first visited. It's such a shame that in Lincolnshire we mostly don't have anything like this, despite the fact that we had a lot of lines scrapped in the 60's which would make lovely walks/cycle paths. There are a few around Lincoln itself but outside of that it's non-existent. Keep up the tremendous work.
