This is truly awe-inspiring. In a way, one might wish (at least I do) that the Romanovs had been wiser, more compassionate, and more generous to their subjects. Terribly sad. Nicholas was so insecure he sought counsel through his uncle and his uncle's sons who were thoroughly arrogant and believed in autocratic rule. So much suffering could have been avoided had Nicholas, who really loved Russia and it's people, only had a stronger will. Many horrible things were done in his name and not by his bidding. Heavy lies the head that wears a crown indeed.

Paul, at the turn of the 20th century Russia was undergoing a huge transformation in almost every aspect of it's society. The Royal Family lead efforts to help in times of want; and, in particular Grand Duchess Elizabeth was revered as a saint because of her work/her sisters with the poor and underprivileged. Later when Lenin came to power an entire class of Russian farmers were eliminated--Kulaks. Perhaps a million people fled Russia for their lives after the Lenin Revolution; and, it has only been in recent times that reconciliation has begun between the deep divisions in Russian society. I, for one, am so pleased to see the Russian Orthodox Church regain it's prominent place in Russian society; old churches reopened, and, especially dear to my heart to see the last Imperial Family honored as saints by the Church for their faithfulness to their faith and to Russia. They deeply loved Russia and died in a bloodbath along with countless thousands of others. Czar Nicholas II, sadly, was a weak ruler, but no one can doubt his loyalty and deep love for Russia. Slowly, the great heritage and traditions of Russia are being restored and honored by her people. You spoke about people starving in the streets; well, you are partly correct because in the winter of 17-18 it was so cold that the trains could not move as they were frozen on the railroad tracks. No one that I know of has never said that Russia is not cold in the winter--just ask Napoleon!

Immediately upon the death of Alexander II, his son removed the family to the Gotchina palace (more of a fortress) for increased security. Security staff, sailors and servants totaled approx. 2000 to protect them and to see to their needs. They lived in military barracks there until suitable rooms could be made. Nicholas and Alexandra did use the Alexander palace as well as the Winter palace. @@SymphonyBrahms Yes, but they resided there (and elsewhere) from about 1895-1904, then resided at the Alexander Palace, as you said. The Grand Duchess Olga writes of having lunch with them there frequently at the Winter Palace, so often in fact that her brother built a suitable nearby residence for her as a gift. Olga thought it too extravagant. Of course, Alexander III moved out immediately with the death of his father and took his family to the Gatchina Palace which is more of a fortress. What a shame this magnificent building could not be videoed without all the tourists and relevant noise and just the beautiful music. Would have been so much more enjoyable to see.

You can see the palace without tourists in the film by Alexander Sokurov "Russian Ark". kzitem.info/news/bejne/u4xn0aSefneJoW0 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Ark

Very very crowded, but sure its what anyone would expect. Hate all these selfies, just feel the place is magnificent, imagine being there at night when there is no one around and you have the place to yourself, to imagine what it was like in the days of Tsars and tsarinas...

I think that in the summer months there are a lot of people in the winter palace. In winter, there are fewer visitors.

The music should be somber after all the people who lived here were brutally murdered.

Tsar Nicholas and his family didn't actually live in the Winter Palace. They lived in a smaller palace, the Alexander Palace outside of St. Petersburg. It was situated in a large estate with lawns, trees, and lakes. They thought that the Winter Palace was two large and cold. And there wasn't enough outside area for their children to play in. It's right in the middle of the city and there is only a small courtyard in the center. The Winter Palace was only used for state occasions.

What a building. But also a bit sad when you think of how much money the Zar familie spend on them self. And Russia was so poor.

If only Nicholas was a wiser ruler for Russia, this palace could still be operating on its full glory but we are so blessed to able to see a marvel architecture that helped shaped the nation's history

This is indeed, a hidden treasure. Like one of the viewer's, I too, have to find fault with the quality of the video. I think the music, is lovely and does not detract from anything. I would love to be able to move around this glorious place, without anyone, around, just me, and complete silence. .

Beautiful. Lazy people propagandize us that 'nothing' is the epitome of life. I think not. Creation is where I am. And respecting creativity is what I see.

"Jordanian" refers to the modern country of Jordan. "Jordan" in the Jordan Staircase refers to the river Jordan. When the Winter Palace was captured during the October Revolution, most of the soldiers attacked not so much the buildings themselves (thank God there was no spray paint then) as the things inside that they viewed as useful: clothes, furs, furniture that could be broken up and used for heat, leather off the furniture that could be made into boots. Oh yeah, and the wine cellar. 😛

it's such a marvelous place, the Winter Palace. so historical, too. the lad @ 12:04 probably doesn't care (yet) about the history of Nicholas II, his family or the Winter Palace. but that's to be expected. that's life.
