Filled with aristocratic elegance, art-nouveau architecture and colonial Saxon history, Sibiu is the cultural centre of Romania. Renowned classical composers Liszt, Strauss and Brahms all played here during the 19th century, establishing what would make Sibiu into Romania's bohemian city. Today, Sibiu is still at the forefront of Romania's arts, music, theatre, film and festival scene.
Although surprisingly free from foreign tourists, Romanian's from all over the country flock here for its bars, cafes and events, which are held throughout the city's brick-walled cellars and brightly decorated attics. Interestingly, Sibiu also had Romania's first school, hospital, library and pharmacy. How's that for progressiveness!
