The forest in Tokyo is a significant and unique feature of the city, showcasing a blend of nature and history. One of the most notable forests is the Meiji Jingu forest, located in the heart of Tokyo. This forest was created to honor Emperor Meiji (1852-1912) and Empress Shoken (1849-1914) after their deaths. Interestingly, the forest surrounding the main shrine buildings of Meiji Jingu was actually man-made, planted by 110,000 volunteers in honor of the emperor and empress. It is a lush green space that covers 70 hectares and includes 234 different varieties of trees, all of which were chosen based on how they would look after 100 or 200 years, ensuring the forest would look natural when it was planted in 1920. This project was led by Dr. Honda Seiroku (1866-1952), who was also responsible for Hibiya Park. Since its creation, the forest has remained untouched, allowing for a diverse ecosystem to thrive within the city.
