In this episode of my series “Walks in Hampshire”, I take a 5 mile “figure-of-eight” walk from the Farley Mount Monument - which is located 8 miles West of Winchester & 8 miles North of Romsey. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I parked my car at the free car park (called Juniper), which is just off a minor road by the Farley Mount Country Park, and made my way to the Farley Mount Monument (only a few yards to the West). Sadly the monument was covered in scaffolding as there were refurbishments taking place.
After enjoying the views from the Mount, I headed West along a section of the Clarendon Way. The path gradually took me downhill, off Beacon Hill, to a country road. At this point, I followed the road (once a Roman Road) Eastwards towards Forest of Bere Farm.
At the farm, I joined a byway that headed North and this took me along the bottom of a small valley. At a junction with a small road, I headed West before picking up a footpath, South, across fields towards the village of Ashley.
After visiting the Church of St Mary at Ashley and looking at the remains of Gains Castle nearby, I followed a footpath East that eventually took me back to the bottom end of the byway near Forest of Bere Farm.
My final leg took me along a country road, uphill, back to my car.
