This is another video in my series “ Walks in Sussex” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode, I visit the village of Stedham which is located 2 miles to the West of Midhurst in West Sussex.
My five mile circular route actually starts at a free car park on Iping Common, just to the South of Stedham on the Southern side of the A272 Midhurst to Petersfield Road. I initially follow part of the Serpent Trail footpath Westwards across Iping Common before heading North across Trotton Common - with a small detour to explore the Black Pond.
I cross the A272 and head towards the hamlet of Chithurst however along the way I take a minor detour across afield back to Trotton to visit St Georges church with it's magnificent wall paintings & brasses.
Back on my route, I cross the River Rother at Chithurst bridge and check out another church - the tiny Saxon church of St Marys. My walk then takes me Eastwards along the Northern bank of the river to the hamlet of Iping where I get to explore another church!
Crossing the River Rother again, I walk along the Southern bank to Stedham bridge. The Rother is close to flooding following recent heavy rain but I am able to cross the bridge and continue along the Northern bank to Stedham Mill. The ford there is only just passable with the river level so high and I continue past the Mill house to Stedham church - St James - (my 4th & final church of the walk!).
My homeward leg takes me through Stedham village to the Hamilton Arms pub for some light refreshment before I head back to my car at the Iping Common car park.
