17 April 1865 Washington D.C.
Dearest Mother,
I hope this letter finds you well. The war has indeed ended and I assure you I am safe and will be returning home one day soon. I am writing quickly as I have decided to accompany some 20 soldiers of my old regiment as they go West to join the Cavalry at Fort Boise and we ride out soon. My Lieutenant on steed is leading the men and Government orders have just been issued that they must first survey a situation in a Canyon mining town just north of the fort before reporting in.
Do you remember our reading of a small town called Wallinger deep within canyon walls a few year back, a curious place quite isolated from all but mining in riches? It seems that some of the townsfolk down there left the town to seek help saying they feared for their lives because of strange goings-on. Reports in their words were that something unknown was happening that changed some of the locals, and there were stories of monsters and frightening creatures of sorts.
I hear Government officials here do not believe these far-fetched claims, but they believe something very wrong happened and it has been weeks since any word from town has come out. Even Wallinger´s mayor is silent, which is in itself unusual. It is known he has a reputation for being well liked and vociferous, often demanding shipments for new supplies.
So, this is a mysterious and captivating distraction after a long war, Mother. Once I finish this and complete my journey, I promise you I will return home. I do not imagine it will take long and that all will be explained and a false alarm.
Your loving son,
Mason
