Will you do a price check on this? Can I get a discount on this since it dented? Can you hand me the one off the very top shelf? Is this all you have? Will you check in the back? Can you call another store? Would you bring me another one of these? This one has something on it. As a former manager for Wal-Mart, it is true that the managers have the discretion to lock up high theft items. This is true across the board. Those decisions are typically made after a trend of missing items are identified as high theft. In my store we locked up fragrance, baby formula and electronic accessories such as ear candy head phones. Because of Wal-Mart’s distribution system, high theft items are identified by tracking incoming merchandise vs. items that cross the register. It is not uncommon to stock a shelf with an item and an hour later find that shelf completely empty but no sale of that item has taken place. It is impossible to combat all theft, so managers make decisions based on the trends in their stores, which varies by location.
@crazygirlfun1

Thats ducked up. Those damn employees dont care if you steal or not personally, its the managers that care, because their job is on the line. The employees try to go about their day without being heckled and burned at the stake for doing their job sometimes doing waaaay more than what their job entitles due to bosses putting on extra work. Usually they lock up products that are stolen often or high risk.. nothing personal against a specific race but stores have numbers they have to up keep. If those numbers are not running up correctly the entire staff will be fired and replaced. Put yourself in these peoples shoes that are just trying to do their job. And if you see someone steal let a manager know so they can stop them. Prices go up when customers steal to make up for the stolen items. So if you want to keep prices low and not behind a security wall, say something. But dont sit there and complain when you guys do nothing to help yourselves by helping us retail workers.

Exactly Adrienne! You just proved your argument wrong! The razors are locked up because they're expensive and get stolen. Ethnic hair products sometimes can be more expensive that other hair products, so that's why they get stolen more. The fact that razors are locked up ( and razors are not marketed to different races ) proves that this has nothing to do with race, and everything to do with what's being stolen. If the truth rubs you the wrong way, that's your problem.

You know how easy it is to steal a little razor or how easy it is to take one pregnacy test out of a box that is anywhere from 9 dollars for a razor to 15 dollars for a pregnacy test. Or how easy it is to take one laundry pod out a jug and walk out. Not only do we know these products are no more than $2 to make. We also know the price is not worth the product. (Expect maybe the laundry pods) but none of these are 1 lb bulky products. Products that are actually worth the $10 to make are not are targeted. Another item is the morning after pill which is $40. Who wants to pay that much for 1 pill? Thats the stuff that is targeted FYI. I can assure you small items that are not worth of cost are targeted. HeatDamageJourney I don't understand what your point is. Yes, I'm aware that some things cost way more than they cost to make...that's so the company can pay employees, overhead, and still make a profit. Ethnic hair products cost more because ethnic hair has different needs than Caucasian hair has and they typically have more costly ingredients. As far as the plan b pill...I think $40 bucks is a very fair price when you consider what it's doing....it's stopping a possible pregnancy from happening. There are serious side effects and this is not something anyone should be popping like tic tacs. There are usually reasons why things cost what they do.

kiss butt Well they said why those are locked up, because they’re constantly being stolen, they didn’t say other products don’t get stolen but they’re only going to pay for more security for products they get highly stolen like razors, even expensive makeup and perfumes are locked up because people really try stealing them..Loni saying “everyone steals” is silly to me because Walmart didn’t say accuse a race of stealing, they didn’t say black people are stealing, simply that those products are being stolen, Loni is saying that because it’s the products for black people, except I have friends that aren’t black and use those products too, so it can be anyone stealing those specific products, which is why I think Walmart didn’t go ahead and accuse black people specifically..as for testing the products I don’t know what you mean because they’re hair products I’ve never heard of people testing them out at the store, in other words it’s not a right, you’re suppose to buy the product if you open it..I also like what Tamera said because she stayed objective, I like to stay objective as well, I like to think what would be said had it been white or Asian or Latino products locked up, I feel like no one would trip or if people did they would probably say something like “why do these products get better security”, also why I like what Tamera said which is get the truth but she didn’t jump to conclusion with any of it..just my opinion I don’t know if you live somewhere else where you can test products but out here people usually do that in secret because we’re not allowed to, if you only meant inspecting the products like ingredients written outside the box, she can do what I do with products that are locked up, I ask the employee to come over unlock the products so I can check them out and they do it, but I surely don’t waste they’re time and label them for doing their job without me having solid proof of otherwise..

I've worked in retail for many years as a manager. You don't put products in a glass case because you are discriminating you doing it based on shrink. If certain category items are constantly being stolen you have to decrease shrink by securing the product. Formula is kept in glass cases in a lot of stores so does that means babies are being discriminated against? Let's not jump into race before you fully understand a companies process.

Urhiness415 detergent and food isn’t really stolen that much. Clothes maybe. But it’s not a race issue. Perris is just a crap city so I’m not shocked that at that store they have to have certain precautions. Especially since employees aren’t really supposed to stop anyone that’s stealing when they see it happen. So that might be the only way they feel they can control it. At a store I lived by a few months ago they locked up everything for phones. Cases, protection screens and even like things that were just attachments. You couldn’t leave electronics without paying first and they held it for you. They didn’t let you hold it until you paid. But at this store I live near now, everything is pretty much unlocked or open. And this store is way nicer than other ones I’ve been to

Mia Jones the reason being is because those products are used by everybody so it can't be discriminatory when everyone uses those products different races men women use Dove soap excetera but when you take something that only a certain group or certain race uses and locks it up it can be very discriminatory ,that's the point that you were missing and that's why to eliminate that they should have just locked up all the hair products

magicpill ismetomakeyoubetter why would they lock up $2 shampoo tho... if it’s not being stolen...? I worked as a store manager, expensive things are locked up. Natural hair products are expensive. If we want there to be an equal playing field, sell Shea moisture for $2. Then all things will be equal. Natural hair products are generally higher quality, and are sold at a higher price point. I think a good question is, why is there a high theft of natural hair products? I worked as a store manager for target and It’s not that easy to lock it all up. It’s based on shrink, and used to identify high theft items.

I'm so glad this segment was aired. That Wal-Mart is the closest to my home and I used to shop there on a regular basis. I, too, was shocked when I saw that only the "black hair care products" were locked away. I didn't understand why every product wasn't locked away if there was a theft issue. As someone who loves to buy hair care products I can spend quite a long time browsing and reading product labels and the idea that I would have to find an employee for assistance and then be watched while I shop is humiliating. I, like Loni stated, made the decision not to shop there anymore for anything. I go to Target where the products are not locked away and they even proudly display photos of the owners of the black owned products. As someone who works in retail, I understand loss prevention; however, it can be done in a way that does not show discrimination and racism.

People can not use common sense when addressing emotional or racial topics. First of all, every single Walmart store is different. Some don't have anything locked up at all. Some have huge sections locked up. Some only have one section locked up. Other chains alike. Things that are often locked up include alcohol, razors, detergent, makeup, hair care etc. Makeup is most commonly locked up or highly monitored. Is it an attack on women because makeup is most often stolen? No. It's all based on stats and location. In better locations nothing is locked up at all because there isn't high rates of theft. In worse locations things will be locked up, especially things where they're seeing a high rate of theft. What contributes to that theft can include mostly the wealth and status of the surrounding area. If the majority of the things being stolen happen to be products used by black people then that is a flaw in that community, not the store attempting to salvage their products from being stolen. It's as simple as this, if they're seeing a huge amount of theft with a particular item, razors per say or in this case hair relaxers/conditioning treatment then they will do as follows. This is not a racial issue nor should it be discussed as one. Also, white people get followed just as often. It is a class issue above all else. It doesn't matter how fair my skin is, if I'm dressed bad I get followed. If i'm not, I don't as often. Now that is an unfortunate circumstance but since when are businesses known for being ethically sound? If you're expecting businesses to some day prioritize people's feelings over money then you'll be waiting a lifetime. I'd also like to add the argument that all hair care should be locked up is absolutely ludicrous. First, the installation of glass locking as well as the maintenance costs money. Second, it makes people feel less inclined to purchase. People often don't want to ask for help and they want to pick up item and read or pick up something in a rush and the glass makes it a more length and annoying process as is. Third, it becomes a hassle to have employees especially in a store like Walmart whey're they already multitasking to have to constantly go on unlock items. Fourth, if they're not seeing high rates of theft in that area of the store then they shouldn't use locks, SIMPLE. If people don't want to see locked glass in their stores then that community can either drastically alter the statistics being gathered or they can change the way they mentally deal with an issue that they find to be offensive and discriminatory.

Natural hair products are more expensive, and because of that sometimes get stolen more. That is a fact. I’ve seen where certain brands of deodorant are locked up. As much as it sucks, the $2 White Rain shampoo isn’t going to do as much damage as the $13 Shea Moisture. Natural hair care products are higher quality, and therefore more at risk to be stolen. It’s likely that they were not always locked up, but after doing inventory they found that there is high shrinkage... so assets protection made the decision to lock it up.

As a former manager at Target, we did put what is called "spider wraps" on products that are high theft products or expensive products. The only thing I can remember that was behind glass was the video games and gaming systems.

As annoying as it is how about instead of locking it up why not just separate ALL of it like the beauty section and make you pay it there?! They did wrong. Seriously Wal-Mart is going downhill! Nonsense excuses. SMH

When ever I'm followed in shops I kindly ask them if they need my help. That usually makes them look dumb and walk off...😩😜💚

I grew up in this city, and it is very appropriate to lock up these products

Soooo Loni must’ve been told she over talks and cuts people off because she’s been quiet lately. She’ll chime in, but she doesn’t interrupt or over talk as much as she used to

It cost money to get glass to lock up the products. If it's mainly the black hair care products that are being stolen, why would they also lock up the rest of the hair care products (costing them more money in the process) if they aren't being stolen? This isn't racial discrimination, it's basic business.

Why does everyone want to get paid? If people are stealing you need to lock up the items.

They act like it's so easy to just go to another store but it isn't for everybody......I live in a town where all we have is Walmart and a few small grocery stores and few small mom and pop shops a lot of stuff you can only get at Walmart it would be almost 2 hours to drive to target 🤨

I live in Mexico and we have walmarts here as well. In the north of Mexico in the state of Sinaloa they lock up the baby formula, but in the state of Quintana roo the baby formula is free and open. Not everything is about race, its about a store protecting the items most often stolen from their store.

I don't mind if it's locked up, but I do mind when I'm kept waiting for them to get someone to unlock it and let me be on my way
