I also purchased my mummy bag with goose feather almost 40 years ago. It is still superwarm although has lost a little of feather, nothing to worry about. I have been sleeping in it without any blankets down to about -20 C and not freezing, many times. My friends have recommended many times fiber-based bags but I have very little trust in their capabilities. I will stick to this although I just ordered some MIL-surplus gear for testing in winter conditions. I can then compare what is good and what is not.

My only complaint is their color selection (Luke knows the love for olives and tans is real)... I wrote them an email and they took it to heart in a reply from a real person! Love my really old Western Mountaineering Highlight, short length at 15 1/2 oz. I bought it in 2007; forget what I paid but was probably over $300. I have used it unintentionally to 31 degrees. Not 100% warm, but not freezing either. It was pretty expensive even then, but so worth it. I hate it when bags are rated to WAY cooler temps than is realistic & then overpriced for what you get. Bags like that should be banned from being sold for anything except camping in the back yard. I am sharing this video so that other people will not make the mistake of buying it for back country trips. This kind of gear will turn off beginners or possibly result in a really bad incident. Hey Luke, first of all, great videos, thanks for your time. I greatly appreciate you reviewing less expensive gear. I am a seasoned backpacker, thru hikes and peak bags under my belt. My excitement for the outdoors has encouraged some friends of mine with a smaller budgets join me. They often head to Wal-Mart looking for gear and have been mislead many times. It aggravates me to see them suffer in the mountain due to inferior gear. Unfortunately they end up spending more or never going with me again due to an uncomfortable experience that could have been avoided. I greatly appreciate your grand effort my friend. Thanks for the honest review. Unfortunately many companies are driven by marketing and winning a perceived numbers game. This does a disservice to the very customers they say they are trying to help. Poor quality at any price isn’t value. And could result is such a poor experience that they don’t enjoy the camping and never revisit the experience. I have many bags for different applications. I would recommend to anyone in the same price range to try and find close out sales or last years model bag of demonstrated quality. I found a Grüezi bag for same price as the above reviewed bag. It has a mix of wool and synthetic insulation and has performed well at the 35-45 f range. It’s designed in Germany and made in China. A bit disappointed in that respect however they stand behind the product. As you are aware when the temperatures get into the single digits or substantially lower you require a completely different level of product. Thanks again for your reviews. Stay safe and Healthy!!

@@tx1hawkins357 They certainly seem to have been out of line, although there's still that grey area between survival rating and comfort rating on bags, and since everyone sleeps at a different temp, things will always be a bit dodgy. I used my Marmot 20-degree bag as a blanket in the Rockies in July and could sleep in my underwear at night. A cooler sleeper might have had to bundle up and zip up the bag. But until a person realizes the different ratings, the smart thing to do is to always shoot for about 12-15 degrees cooler than the temps in which you plan to sleep, then proceed accordingly with your shopping.

Long-time subscriber here. You nailed it with these Walmart products. In my experience with them - years back they were much more responsible and the quality didn’t simply suck across the board. Yes their brands were ‘ok’ but no longer. And it’s not just the camping equipment. It’s become way too China-oriented and they don’t appear to care anymore what they produce. I’m old enough to positively say the Walton family way back wouldn’t have put up with the decline in quality products that we see there these days.

What a great point regarding the quality of the product and the company's mission to provide camping gear people who have less financial means. One of the biggest barriers to getting outdoors is access to basic, affordable gear. Creating a product that doesn't live up to it's claims will only create bad experiences that with further discourage people from exploring nature.

A couple thoughts. My understanding of the temp rating of a bag is "The bag will keep you alive at the temp, not comfortable, but alive." You want to add about 15 degrees for comfort. My buddy and I did our first winter camping this year, last day of Jan. first day of Feb. Temps ranged from 28 to 35 degrees. I bought a Coleman 0 degree mummy bag off of Amazon and was comfortable as could be. Actually had to open it up a couple times to keep from sweating. Bag is not super light, but while this sub par bag is 130.00, mine came in at 35.00. Sleeping pad also should be mentioned as it keeps you off the ground so you don't lose heat that way. Also should be mentioned I was wearing thermals, wool socks, and a beanie. Play smart, be comfortable! Enjoy the outdoors year round!

I am a long time road dog. I use a Pendleton wool blanket I've had for years and looks brand new, and when it gets below about 40* I add my tiny and light Sol escape lite bivy. Together this cost less than $200, handles 30* for me, and I can use the blanket as a shawl when my clothes aren't enough on extra cold days. It's not the lightest, cheapest, warmest, or smallest, but it's the best for me. I sleep in a hammock, sometimes in wilderness, sometimes in San Francisco. With blanket I can sleep with my spade and have freedom of movement to come out fighting if need be. And that is a threat in San Francisco sometimes. I was a sleeping bag guy for a decade, but I won't be going back unless I move to Alaska or Colorado mountains lol. Then you need a good bag.

I’m the UK so I’m not sure if you have Vango stuff over there but I got a Vango Cobra 200 which has the same temperature rating, weighs 700g and cost £110 ($150) but its great. I’ve used it in the stated temp range and slept perfectly. Beads water off well so didn’t have any issues with condensation either, which in the UK is a problem 90% of the year. If you can get them over there I’d recommend checking it out and comparing the two, there’s a clear difference in quality between the two, even just through this video. Good on you for having the balls to call these companies out. Someone has to do it!

So, for summer, not too terrible... but not for a tough multi-season thru hike.

Love your reviews and I think this is the first comment I have made on one....you nailed all the issues and called them out. Good. Only issue is you call this a budget friendly summer bag...really? How is it budget friendly (for a summer bag) when it is over 100 dollars and, from the very detailed review you gave, won't last more than a season with all the down coming out. Buying a wool blanket for under 100 dollars and use it in the summer camping as well as for an extra blanket in the winter time at home on a daily basis or as a couch blanket etc. I can see tons of uses for a good wool blanket vice spending over 100 dollars on a bag that you will use for a few times before it is useless.

I have owner several bags and have looked at hundreds of bags and what gets me is a bag may say 35 degrees temp rating but is comfort rating might be more like 45. Why cant sleeping bags temp rating be the comfort rating, why do you have to break out the magnify glass to read the fine print to see what the real world in the wild temp rating is.

Both bags cost under 100 bucks together and I am totally satisfied with their performances. I would love to try out down bags but cannot justify the expenditures. If extra warmth was desired I usually bring along an alpaca blanket or the GoreTex cover from an old MSS system and quite often have slept with just the alpaca blanket. Anything that Walmart sells in their camping department just simply cannot be trusted to be of quality or meet the specifications stated on their products. I would prefer to shop at my local military surplus store and 99% of the camping products I've bought there I can trust will function and not fail.

You'd think that if they were going to use polyester, they'd place it in such a way to keep the feathers inside the bag. P.s. What you showed was feathers sticking out not down. Feathers are a lot cheaper cost wise because they are not as warm as down. So your bag isn't all down either it's probably mostly feathers. Do some research and let me know... Is it down or feathers... From what I can see I'm guessing feathers... If the manufacturer switch to feathers instead of down that maybe why the tag says the wrong temperatures. ❤🌅🌵😷

Down are feathers.... That is why at times they are refered to as down feathers. And there are 3 different types of down feathers.
@suzisaintjames
4 жыл бұрын
@@ba1050, down is a type of feathers that are soft and fuzzy. When you see "feathers" on a label it means the type of feathers Ben Franklin wrote with... flat and stiff. Here's an article on feather and down blends and what to expect in warmth. This sleeping bag label is not giving proper information and should be reported. 💖🌞🌵😷 www.downandfeathercompany.com/pages/how-to-choose-down-vs-feather

@Clone Ranger, sorry I didn't mean the length or size if Ben Franklin's feather pens.. I meant the same shape. If you'd look at the link of the article I included, you'd see what the government/ industry's definitions of down vs feathers.

I like to camp in colder weather. My bag is a 0 degree and I put a fleece blanket inside and most of the time I can't zip up the bag. Bought it through hiker direct.

Thank you so much for your review. I was initially excited about the Lithic line but after watching your reviews it's obviously not worth the investment. I do hope they improve. It is such a struggle for those of us on a tight budget to obtain quality outdoor gear.

Seems like a good budget friendly option for above 50 degree camping. I live in Florida so it would be a good winter option here. Anywhere else depends on the temp .

I think it's awesome that you called Walmart/Moosejaw out on the insult of saying they want to be inclusive and yet turning out crap products. I think this is the first review I've seen of yours where you actually seemed angry. And since we know someone at Walmart is paying attention, maybe they make the necessary quality changes. And change the EN rating on that bag! Edit to add: for folks looking for a decent and low cost down (600 fill duck down) bag, you can nearly always pick up a deal on the Kelty Cosmic 20 Down bag. Normal price is in the same range as this Lithic, but it's frequently on sale for less than $100. Downside on the Kelty, at least in my view, is the foot box is a bit small. But it's a good budget bag.

REI has several sleeping bags rated to as low as 20 degrees that cost under $100. The downside is that they are pretty heavy (at least, the 20 degree version), but I'm sure they at least live up to what they were meant to do.

50F and above is blanket weather 30F to 50F is regular sleeping bag weather. Below 30F is down bag weather. Warmth is somewhat subjective. I definitely would not pay 100 plus bucks for that bag. I got a Teton light weight mummy down bag for 70 bucks at the REI garage sale.

There's always better options. Klymit 20°F bag on sale now at REI Garage for $97. Moose Jaw sometimes has great prices and has great service. I don't know why they would go this route with sub-par gear. Could just be the Walmart factor.

I usually recommend the Kelty Tuck 20, it's cheap, it's comfy, it's warm. It doesn't pack down the smallet, but for getting into it all it's been a great starter bag.

My Moramot 35 weighs 1lb 10 oz has 750 down. It works, great all around bag. Its more than double the price though. That bag had no loft to it. Or my 1 lb quilt 20 degree worked for three weeks at 32 degrees. Of course money was no object. I would add 10 degrees to what ever any company says. and wear cloths.
