Look in the canyon there it is the Walnut Canyon Dam, National Historic Place #79000417.
Constructed in 1885 by the Atlantic and Pacific railroad (later the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe) the dam is a tribute to those who came before us.
The Dam was built to supply water to the railroads steam engines at stations located in Winona and Angel. Originally a trunk line was built and water was transported via rail tank cars, then in 1897 the track was abandoned and a pipeline was laid, which supplied water until 1944.
Water was diverted in 1903 when D. M. Riordan built a dam upstream to create Lake Mary (lower lake) for a water supply for the City of Flagstaff. In 1939, local cowboys from the Kellum Ranch decided to release some of the water for use by their stock downstream. They set off dynamite on the north end of the dam, loosening masonry to allow water to leak out.
This information was contained in the National Register of Historic Places Inventory - Nomination Form, accepted on Jan. 29, 1979.
