Watching Walter Payton repel defenders backwards, and then run at angles that defy gravity...this is true art. Young kids should educate themselves on the legend of Sweetness.

Walter Payton is the greatest all around back to play. I like guys like him, Emmitt Smith, Ladainian Tomlinson, and Frank Gore because they cared about being more than just a runner; blocking and receiving are also just as important. Complete backs...

The fastest - no, The most elusive - no. The strongest - no. But he definitely had all of that and when combined with his heart, extraordinary sense of balance, that powerful straight arm and his desire to actually punish the would-be tackler, puts him above all others. You wouldn't see him sliding or running out of bounds to avoid being tackled. Now, he rushed for over 16k yrds, and added another 5k with reception yards (the only one better may have been Roger Craig), passing yards (including 8 TD's), and early days with punt/kickoff return yrds. No one even close to that. Were not done yet!! Any better blocking back? - no. Any other back could QB a team? - no. Any other back, that if the SHTF, could also fill in as punter (35-40 yd punts all the time during practice) AND place kicker (30-35 yd field goals during practices) - NO!!! Now also add his durability (13 yrs missing one game to the flu) while rushing for a single game record battling a 101 temp, flu-associated cramps, aches and nausea, Was he a show boat - hell no. He did what he was paid to do and got back into the game. without dancing and prancing around like some ballerina. Did he get mad when tackled? hell no, usually patted the tackler on the butt or shoulder and told the guys(s) "good tackle". The poster boy for sportsmanship was Walter Payton. And yet, he was mild mannered, quiet, and extremely humble. No "trash" talking necessary or warranted from Walter. Plus, off the field he was a great humanitarian. Now, with all that, who is the greatest player and running back ever in the NFL? You guessed it - Walter Payton #34.

Naw he couldn't do what Peyton could do. And he had an advantage too being short. I love Barry and he was a beast but it's hard to tackle someone already close to the ground. You can't even grab their legs. Only thing he did better than Peyton was cuts and jukes. That's it. He couldn't catch out the backfield better, he didn't block better, he wasn't jumping up over the everyone getting touchdowns. And he definitely wasn't running thru people. Peyton was like Jim brown and gale sayers combined. Best RB of all time and probably the best football player of all time

@@somersetcace1 I hear u but take all the things that Walter did and focus on his RB abilities and I still think he's the best. Barry was a dog tho no doubt. Just think he couldn't do what Walter could. Never seen Barry break tackle's, stiff arm people , jump over people just crazy what he could do. I'll give Barry the jukes and the ability to stop on a dime but Walter could do that too just not as good as barry. And Walter could block great. Like i said I love Barry I just think Walter was a better rb
