Called the brown sound because while Eddie was playing in California, they had brown outs and he liked the way his amps played during the brown outs (sorta like black outs but power just gets weaker, not all the way off) so he modified his amplifiers to act the same way they did during the brown out, thats what the pinnacle achieves.

that is really interesting! but what about the echoplex? I always thought that the pre amp circuit in the ep3 caused that "brown sound"

Helpful and entertaining video as always from you guys. Just FYI, Brent Mason is a studio giant. He's not really a country star - meaning that the general public doesn't know him, but he's "first call" on sessions for the stars' records. From time to time all the top session guys in Nashville get together and gig. They are rightly called The Players. I heard them one night and Brent was in the middle of an amazing extended solo - just blazing away at top speed with clarity when I suddenly realized that the steel guitarist was doubling him note for note. It was so tight I couldn't immediately detect that more than one person was playing. That was one of those "ah ha" moments when you realize those guys are on another level.

Its called the brown sound because thats a phrase Eddie used to describe the sound he wanted to get from his rig. He wanted it to sound brown like Al's snare as he described it

I like Andertons demos. Even though they get goofy, they play stuff people want to hear. N Stuff by comparison always has this jazz guy who thinks he is too cool doing them. I want to hear the gear run through its paces. Not just jazz noodling.

I was thinking about this for some time, then I heard Eddy used to use a Variac to lower the wall AC his amp was getting, so it was an artificial brown-out, which is what is called in electrical engineering terminology, a brown out, so lower wall AC gives you brown sound, :-)

You guys didn't disapointed me very usefull review, actually more useful tan the retso of the demos in YT, testing the 65 not using a Fender amp and a Strat or Tele was great and wise.

As far as the "Brown Sound" goes, this is how I understand it. When there is a power "black out" the power in your residence goes out completely, when there is a "brown out" the power goes out partially - hence the term "brown sound". It was rumored that Eddie used to use a variac in front of his marshall's to cause a power sag which produced the brown sound.

Eddie actually said that Alex's snare had the brown sound and it had nothing to do with his guitar. He tried to get his sound to match up with that snare and when he got close he started saying it was getting the brown sound. Little known fact, look it up, it is true.

wow, im quite impressed with the hot-wired high gain sounds.. better than the pinnacle ,at least with this mesa amp in the vid. i play metal, and if the pedals sound like this i would totally go for the hot-wired.. i wonder if they have another pedal thats the left half of the Hot-wired. i have seen another vid where the triple wreck sounds great.

i read an interview with him where he said its the brown sound b/c he doesn't play with new strings...he uses strings with loads of grime on them which give you a darker sound...brown = grime...however i'm sure there is more to it

Nah, Eddie was trying to create the sound of Alex's drums on his guitar, the best word he could think of to describe it was a Brown sound.

+Ellie Hayes Its hard to say without being familiar with your setup but generally you want to keep your mids rolled off. That said, the guitar is a mid-range instrument so don't get too extreme, remember you can always boost the bass and treble so that they're high relative to the mids and achieve something similar that will cut through in a mix much better. Also, use as little gain as possible. Start with the gain on zero and slowly roll it up until you get something that sounds like metal. There you go, don't go too much higher than that. Assuming that you have a tube amp (if not you need to get one to make this pedal work properly) what happens after you increase gain past the "this is metal" threshold is that the low end starts to get flabbier and saturate more, this could be desirable but after a certain point it becomes too much and you will lose definition and not cut as well in a band situation. Personally I have my gain on my 6505+ on 3, thats all I need to get a metal sound and the lowish gain really makes the metal of the strings ring out- it's a really cool sound.
