When this song was a hit it was 1984. I was 29 at the time, dreading turning the dreaded Big Three-Oh. But now, 38 years later, here I am, still breathing, doing great and wondering what I was so worried about. And now, to see this video after so long it's quite a treat to realize how good life can be.

Unlike today when you have a plethora of software synths for a bargain. And back then you could hear the same DX7 and TR808 and other famous machines' presets everywhere. How about: One wasn't so used to the sounds and, as an upright teenager, doing substances and bonking and dancing and not giving a fork? (Although: Style-wise, yes, far more variety back then. Golden age!) ( ^^)v

I love how songs like this always pay homage to that old place you spent most of your youth at, now nothing more than a crumbling crypt with nothing but the ghosts of days gone by holding the walls together. We all had that special place we loved. You walk by it, or drive by it and stop to look at it, and your heart fills with the joy of your old memories of the good times you had, but your eyes fill with tears as your realize those days are gone. After a brief reflection of the old days, you smile and move on with a renewed vigor, knowing that it was better to have had those old days and good times, than never to have had them at all, and you realize how much time really has gone by, as we must find a way to deal with the fact that we aren't kids anymore. Such is the dilemma for us all...

Prairie Wolfdog Thanks, friend. I was there in the 80's too, as I now clock in at 51. I always was very sentimental about the old places is used to hang out at when I was a kid, and be they still there or under a new name, or an old deserted building, my heart still longs to go thru them "just one more time" to look at the place or to just hang for a moment and remember everything that happened in a room or corner of the place. For that reason, "House We Used To Live In "by the Smithereens was always one of my fave songs.

I agree. Time shows us that nothing can remain the same forever, but for those places that DO remain, it's like a reward life gives us, that we can still go to some of the same old places we went as kids, and celebrate those who are still with us and remember with a wink a smile and a tear, those who are not. Memories are two-sided, they can make you happy, and they can hurt like hell. I've had a bit of both in my life.

My introduction to this song was through a little game called Vice City on the PS2. I've always loved it because of the game, and I remember all of the memories of driving around through the night, listening to this, Out of Touch by Hall & Oates, and Africa by Toto. However, this one struck different with me. I'm not sure why I love this one so much compared to the others. Last year (2022), Ray Liotta, legendary actor and the voice of the game's protagonist, passed away. Now everytime I hear this song, I imagine Tommy Vercetti strutting the streets in his tuxedo, living the high life Thank you, Ray Liotta and Wang Chung! 💖

Will Francis 80’s videos were filled with so much of that kind of surreal imagery. It’s because real artists were involved in conceptualizing, and they weren’t as constrained. I dont think that they are underrrated, this was a gr8 song, i really loved it, but they were a 1 hit wonder, they never had any other songs that were as good as this, or that i can remember.

If one listen carefully to the instruments with the vocals besides the lyrics - just the beat and vocals , you'd realize how well and professionally this track has been composed - all the instruments with the vocals altogether is in perfect sequence with a rocking beat that compliments and combines the song altogether... In my opinion this track could easily be the track of the pop era...

Wang Chung is still a cool band...those catchy new wave sounds of the 1980s that can never be recreated...due to technological advances in music equipment...it's not easy to recreate that retro sound with modern music equipment...though with Wang chung..these guys can do it..so glad Wang Chung came back last with a new album of reworked songs..amazing how jack and nick still sound as good as ever..their wonderful voices restored in time.

We had rock and of course metal. But I’m realizing how much 1st wave music made the 80s extra special. Nothing else like it. What a great time.

I like how this plays at the Malibu Club in Vice City. Like someday the Mailbu Club is going to end up like the dance hall in the music video. Abandoned and lonely with it's former occupants lamenting the good times there.

Next time someone says that the 80's wasn't cool or filled with talented music, show them this video or play this song for them!!! I think that this is one of the best 80's songs EVER, IMO!!! I like the end of this video when the person has the suitcase over their head and is running, LOL!

Yes, Wang Chung had some great songs!!! I think the tempo, melodic chiming guitar (as someone below said), and lyrics made this New Wave Song what it was. However, "To Live and Die In L.A. was also a MASTERPIECE! " Peace out and I like your very definitive boom box icon!

hottestbabe1000 I love this Era of music. My good friend thinks I have music issues because I like older music (Gary Numan, Duran Duran, and the very obscure band, Japan), but you like what you like. I listen to newer music (The Killers, Foster the People, Imagine Dragons to name a few).
