By far the best tennis Venus has played all year. I was so not expecting this. She has to maintain this level to pose a challenge against Ashleigh. I don't see Ashleigh's backhand slice troubling Venus bcuz unlike the players these days, Venus doesn't struggle against backhand slice that much. (After all she played players with the best slices in the form of Henin or Graf in the past. Even tho it's a long time back, but you don't forget what you learn if you're technique is sound). I believe it's Ashleigh's forehand and second serve that will trouble Venus. Hopefully Vee comes through. Fingers crossed.

By the contrary, I think Barty's will be a big eyesore. Venus used to be fine in the time of Graf, Sanchez V., Henin etc. but it was bc her backhand was great. Not so much after her wrist surgeries. Actually some of her losses recently comes from slicers.

It's mind-boggling why Venus hasn't played more grass court tournaments. She's playing out of this world.
@aaronwilkins1843
5 жыл бұрын
Well the grass court season has never been particularly long in any case. At most a player can fit in 2 before Wimbledon but given they could require you to play 10 matches in 14 days, that's never a good idea for anyone.
@Smartkid2387
5 жыл бұрын
@@aaronwilkins1843I know its a tight schedule but Venus has been playing tennis 20 plus years and this is the 4th time she's played a grass court tournament before Wimbledon? Federer almost always plays a grass court tournament before Wimbledon so there really is no excuse.
@aaronwilkins1843
5 жыл бұрын
@@Smartkid2387 ...the 'excuse' is she just does not want to. Does she need an 'excuse'? The 9 times she has reached a final she has not entered one- the 3 previous times she has, she has failed to go beyond the QF. Federer has always played a grass tournament because a) grass is typically a European surface, b) he hates clay and for him its important he gets his confidence high again for SW19, and c) he has established an immense rewards package with tournaments like Halle to be there. The grass court tournaments on the ladies' side are not 'big enough' tier wise for the Sisters to justify playing there when they only do 12-17 tournaments a year! Plus, its part of their mystique that they more often than not turn up to Wimbledon almost fully fit every year without having amassed weeks and weeks of match toughness. Moving on the grass court (due to the speed etc) is by far the most physically taxing surface (why Nadal hates it as its devastating for his knee problems)- so even if the grass season was longer, its unlikely many would play loads of pre-Wimbledon tournaments. Furthermore, I think everyone underestimates how busy the sisters are- they run multiple businesses and initiatives between them, they can't just be everywhere all the time.
@Smartkid2387
5 жыл бұрын
@@aaronwilkins1843 Venus can obviously do as she pleases but considering grass is her best surface, it has been unwise that she has not played more tournaments on it. I believe Venus hasn't won a tournament since 2016 and instead of wasting time on a surface, like clay, where she has had little success, she could have been playing more tournaments on grass, where we all see she is suited for. Venus is at the stage where realistically she is a long shot in a grand slam and if she wants to add more to her resume, her focus should be on adding more titles to her mantel. I say all of this out of love for Venus. On another note, I do think Serena should've played more tournaments on grass, but being her resume is pretty long and she doesn't always need match play, I'll give her a pass.
@aaronwilkins1843
5 жыл бұрын
@@Smartkid2387 No, it is not wasting time to play clay court tournaments- it is nearly 5 times as long a season as the grass and many of the tournaments are Premier level ones (it would be ridiculous to not enter these as ranking points are so much higher- losing at QF in some of these tournaments would be as much as enduring 5 matches and winning on grass). Players need good ranking points to achieve a seeding at a grand slam and hopefully then have a better draw early on. Serena- 'doesn't always need match play'....well as I stated Venus has reached the final 9 times without warm up events so that goes for both of them

Venus & Serena have really mastered playing against these pesky counter punchers over the years. I remember early in their careers they would often beat the top players, but then lose to a crafty Hingis/Henin type because they would go for too much or feed these players a ton of power, only for it to be re-directed at a nasty angle. The sisters know better than that now, and Venus showed great versatility in this match, not allowing Qiang to tire her out.
