THANK YOU! Growing up with a Herpetologist stepdad, over 100 turtles in our home I can’t thank you enough for this message! My parents dedicated so much to educating people about why they should NOT have a Pet Turtle! They used to sell Turtles for pets at KMart! They helped get laws passed to stop this! 😊 They helped get laws passed so Turtles from other Countries couldn’t be brought into the US! It wasn’t to be mean, it was to protect Turtles 🐢 ❤

@@itsnotthatdeep6657 unfortunately you can't guarantee those ages at all. Captive lifespans rely HEAVILY on your care, to the point people believed the lifespan for leopard geckos was 10-15 years, then 15-20 years, now it is obvious that with a proper setup and diet they can live over 30-40 years and that's without them developing severe issues due to age, same ages were though for ball pythons, but there's a female in a zoo over 60 YEARS old, AND she laid eggs. Reptiles, Birds and potentially more can live a very long time, and we truly don't know the length majority of species can go, and the ones we do have basically be over generations like with torts, gators/crocs, turtles, and birds. So, ye a lot of unfortunately common exotics live a good half our average lifespans, and that's should be a common occurrence, not a rarity.

So many people fall for the pit trap of impulse buying something that they think looks cute but then not really think of the kind of care required to keep that animal happy, healthy and alive. That's not even getting into how most of the time these kind of animals are purchased when they're small babies! As someone who kept turtles, I can agree they really are NOT low maintenance! They're charming creatures no matter their size and age but they are a big commitment and not everyone will think it's worth it!

I ended up with two baby turtles that my ex found in a crawl space. There are no rescues for them where I live. So took a crash course on their care. Came to me the size of a quarter. Now one is 3 inches and the other is 3 1/2 inches and calms down when they hear my voice. As far as people saying they are a lot of work. I guess I got lucky. They have been easy. A lot less work then pups and kittens. At least I don't have to worry about my shoes being chewed up. Lol. Seriously. My two babies are my sweethearts and looking forward to them growing bigger.

This is a great video for everybody who wants pets in general. There’s so many people out there who purchase pets just because they look cute (or because they’re bored during the pandemic) and completely abandon them once they get lazy or once their pet doesn’t seem so ‘cute’ anymore. It’s unfair for the animals.

Little turtles tend to be so much more work then bigger one. My big tank barley gets dirty but my little tank is a weekly clean. I got two small turtles from a friend who wasn’t expecting them to be so messy and one of them ended up getting an eye infection and potentially a respiratory infection that’s I’ve been dealing with for a month now shots every three days and weekly vitamin A. He seems like he is getting better some days his eyes are open some days they still look infected. I feel so bad but I’m doing everything possible to help him. He can’t see to eat so I have to feed him with a syringe daily. I also have 4 kids under 8 😅😅 so my life has been hectic the last month or so. But anything to help my guy get better. 😢 UPDATE: My baby turtle is no longer sick and is thriving tremendously 💕

I found a red eared slider baby on a beach here in Southern California a few days ago. He likes to be held and petted. He finally ate some blood worms. I have to order all his special lights now. I got a tank. But have him in a large bowl now with a reptile heat pad under it to keep the water warm. I could find a pond and let him go. It he’s so small! I think he’d get eaten. I think someone dumped him at the beach. Everyone was standing around him and I came up to see what they were looking at as there are many interesting finds at the beach. They said that they’re invasive and the wildlife rescue wouldn’t take him. He can’t swim in the ocean. They were just going to leave him to die. I scooped him up while they were all standing there. I said ‘well I guess it’s Herbie’s lucky day because I’m not gonna leave him here to die.’ Now I have 3 dogs a snail and a turtle. lol. Who knew the set up for tbis kind of turtle was so expensive! I’m going to just order things one paycheck at a time. Herbie is ok staying warm in the bowl for now. Those lights are expensive!

I work security at a hospital. Awhile ago one of my supervisors found a baby turtle on the sidewalk. We brought it inside and placed it in one of the empty face mask boxes we had. It was about as small as that baby. One of my coworkers brought it home and has been taking care of it. Its a red eared slider and is getting so big. Ive still got a picture of the day we found it. Smaller than the lettuce we put in the box with it. I get regular updates but its been very clear how much work they can be. His name is grond, and we love him. Her current plan is to get one of those kiddy pools and a bigger filter to put out on her covered patio to place him in. He used to be named smaug after the dragon from lotr but was changed after they realized how stupid the little guy is. Went with the name of the battering ram instead haha

I got them when I was 8 for a birthday present they were as small as a 50p my grandma only thought they got as big as a £5 note and live for 5-7 years and was given a small pink fish tank😅 15 years later they were as big as a small melon and we just ran out of room for them and as covid hit and fish stores closed feeding them was hard I lived in England and at that point terrapin were illegal to sell so after covid lock down ended I started looking for sanctuaries! I found a lovely one close to me that rescued and permanently homed any non native terrapin or water turtle and was happy to take them now they live with 104 other terrapins has lots of room to walk and has a massive pool that’s always at 24c I was often worried that my terrapin wasn’t getting what they needed but I was told my terrapin was strong, healthy and super engaged with their environment!! I can still check up on them vi cameras and I get email updates

It’s not always shits & giggles, it’s literally always shit & of course their personalities do make you giggle…people I think sometimes read an article or two anf suddenly they are a professional in the care of said animal….like chicks, ducklings, and kits/kittens (baby bunnies) for Easter….then parents are like i DiDnT kNoW iT wOuLd Be So MuCh WoRk ….or…. i DiDnT kNoW iT wOuLd CoSt So MuCh To CaRe FoR! && what really gets me is seeing 32937 fish in a 10 gallon tank…. There is so much more to an animal or animals than just an “aWw So CuTe So TiNy I wAnT oNe” People should really do their research, like a deep dive… Talk to other hobbyist, Beginners, Intermediate, Pros…alike. Go to the library get books, LOTS of books! Research online. Find forums specific to the animal you are planning to buy. Facebook is fantastic for groups, you just got to find the ones for you. Some are nothing but people who forget they too were once beginners, or full of internet trolls….but if you really look you’ll find some amazing groups on FB. I have a turtle but we didn’t get her as a baby. We got her at what I suspect to be 4-6 years. Previous owners got her after a lot of passing around when the first owner couldn’t keep her. I think she was about 9 inches then? Now she’s about 10-ish, a bit more. I honestly envy those who got their turtles as babies. She hates handling but she’ll leave her basking spot cause she knows i have to take her out to clean.

Thank you!! As someone who raises iguanas for people who don’t want the hassle to raise them and tame them themselves, and has raised African bull frogs for people too, there really isn’t knowledge to these people how big these guys get! I had one person who wanted a tame and two year old lewisi, when I came to there place with the animal after two years of working with it, they only had a forty gallon tank, that was WAY too small, I told them the truth and asked if they knew the size it would get to, I still got paid for buying the animal, and all the supplies during the two years, but I quickly had to find him a new and experienced owner. These guys get big! Some don’t, but many do!

I'm so glad you posted this!!! I am an accidental turtle parent and let me tell you, this man is right!!! It cost a lot of $ to properly take care of a turtle. Side note: Never thought I could love so hard with a 🐢.

Only got one! ready for the size change, he is as big as a quarter now and I have him in a 10 gallon tank already, that 10 gallon will suffice for the first 2 years
