I was quite shocked when on one try I did hit and held the note and it was near on perfect on the line, yet it sounded weird and not as good as the take where I was slightly flat. Go figure..... ??

When I was a child when playing with my toys, I used to prefer the ones that had imperfections, mainly because they stood out from the rest. The imperfections made them special, the imperfections were their 'special powers'. Same when picking out a puppy from a litter, the one that stood out (slipped on its own poo) was the one that stole my heart. I'm not sure if it's just me, but I feel that imperfections are what makes things special.

pitch training. listen to a note on a piano or synth and then try to match it exactly. Listen to a scale slowly, like in slow motion, sing each note but imo, LISTENING to a slow melody or scale is good if you don't have that in your mind already. You need to get some synth or piano software so you can sing pitches that ARE tuned to A440 and just train your ear and then your voice (which is just muscles that move and squeeze stuff to get higher and lower pitches). It takes practice like any craft. 3:30 haha I can hit an octave lower than that note w/o even breaking up. I'm almost a bass. Low baritone, I suppose. Keep edumakatin dem peeples.

Interesting comment. Does this mean that you think the fight to save real music from oblivion is not worth the effort? Most listeners of music don't have a clue what has happened to the music industry over the course of the last couple of decades or more, even if they realize that music from their youth - pre-1998 - sounds much better than most of the music fare today. Which, I suppose, is why Fil's vocal tuning petition is stalled at just over 10,000 signatures. Just curious, did you sign it?

@@elizabethmiller7291 I'm just saying what I said. I'd rather have Happy Fil give me insight into why great music is great than Scolding Fil telling me why bad music sucks because some self-appointed Internet music sheriff sends him emails asking him to take down another target, followed by a second video rehashing the same thing because he feels he has to defend himself from the fanbois. It's boring by virtue of essentially being the same thing over and over, and it's just preaching to the choir, anyway. Do you really think this reaches any people who don't already think the music of their youth was better (which, by the way, is every generation since Thag Ugg first beat a rhythm with a mastodon tusk on a rock)? And, as I also said, so much negativity can't be good for Fil, whom I like and want to be happy.

So true. So many singers these days sound the same with no real personality to their voices. When I listen to songs on the radio, the voices are not distinctive. I can hardly tell one from the other. Whereas you use to always be able to identify singers like Linda Ronstsadt, Carly Simon, Stevie Nicks, etc. Immediately. There are still some distinct voices like Amy Winehouse and a few others but for the most part singers seem to all sound the same. Autotune takes out all the character.

He does talk a little about it in the London Grammar analysis. Singing slightly sharp tends to add tension to a lyric or passage whereas we tend to perceive slightly flat vocals as sadder. Additionally most instruments are not perfectly in tune so pitch correction can push an accompanied vocal slightly out of tune.

I would agree to pitch correcting the scales because that is what you should aim to pitch but of course as you said when you sing you don't get that accurate pitch but you do not want to practice hearing some incorrect pitch. That is why it is best to practice pitch with an electric piano rather than a real piano which may not be quite in-tune. The voice has sympathetic frequencies not just the frequency of say A that you see pitched on the line that is why you might fool the software when it picks up more of those frequencies rather than the note you are trying for or the note you hear yourself

Assuming, of course, that the current music industry mindset is not completely set in stone and can actually be changed, given enough effort on the part of all of us real music lovers, artists with talent and integrity, and, not least of all, producers and sound engineers who are on board with the seemingly quixotic battle to save real music from oblivion.

@@graham9881 For sure. I couldn't believe it when I saw Roger Daltrey at 80 singing Baba O'Reilly in the original key. Unbelievable. (A Phil analysis video of it I think) What I mean though is string to string on a guitar the relationship of the notes is kind of averaged out so it all works as a whole but sometimes guitarists will actually tune a little out of perfect tune between certain strings because in the key they're playing the relationship of the notes is better if you make adjustments. I don't know the real explanation of it which is why I'm hoping Phil will notice my comment and possibly make a video explaining it. It's definitely an advanced guitarist/musician thing that I heard about briefly. I think it relates to not being on the line all the time with the singing but in relationship to how a guitar is tuned to 440 etcetera etcetera. ✌️😎

@flamencoprof

He touched on this at 04:39 onwards. Equal Temperament and Just Intonation are two different ways of tuning. Look those terms up. Basically, Just Intonation is based on whole-number ratios like 1:2, 3:4, 3:5 etc. But If you change keys, the same ratios produce slightly different notes. A long time ago it was figured out you could tweak all the notes slightly so that a song could be played in any key, and it would always be "right", if slightly wrong. If it can be achieved on stage, you can abandon the slightly "out" Equal Temperament tuning, and use the "Just Intonation for that one key. It will sound more "harmonious". I hope I have expressed myself clearly enough to you. Cheers!

Having a visual tool is good but I would still say you want to develop your ear and an easy way to do that is to sing along with records. In your car on your own is great. Songs with long notes are the best e.g. My way by Frank Sinatra but you can choose whatever you like. On the longer notes try to adjust your pitch until it comes into tune. It takes a little practise but really not very long until you can hear yourself in unison with the singer, before long it becomes very easy to spot.

If you can afford it: go to a good music school to teach you the practical fundamentals like breathing, controlling your vocal cords, finding your resonance in your head, finding your tone (timbre), finding your reach (ambitus). Even if you don’t want to perform on stage, a good teacher will make your singing skills so much better and also your self esteem whilst singing. Long ago back in the days of film I was studying photography. One person in the class was color blind. He could see Cyan and Magenta but couldn't see something Magenta on a Cyan background. When trying to adjust color on a print he would know he was off but didn't know which way to take the filters to get the color correct. He could be to Magenta and add magenta thinking he was Cyan. I think I am that way with notes. I can tell when a note is off but have no idea which way. I also have a hard time when hearing two notes one after the other knowing which one is higher and which is lower. I played around with a little program for a while that was suppose to help with that but finally decided what the hell I like listening to music so will just stick with that. I grabbed the vocal pitch app though and might play with that some.

It might help your talking point if you didn't only shift between octaves with your "robot voice" examples. An arbitrarily lower or higher pitch might illustrate note value over just the same monotone over an octave or two. Cool explanation though. "Say, ive got really bad shakes and tremors but I REALLY want to be a brain surgeon or join the bomb squad..."😅 ...rock!

I can’t sing worth a damn, I’ve always wanted to take singing lessons but it’s either too expensive or too far away. I’m so envious of people that can sing at least somewhat decent just naturally. I suck at controlling my voice and pitch, and probably everything else involved in singing. Sometimes I just wanna sing a song so bad, but I don’t want to assault anyones ears.
