Great video, and THANK YOU for what you said about living abroad, respecting the culture, and not being an economic colonizer, it's such an important point. I have lived in Bangkok for a decade, and tho I am now at a point where I don't have to live cheaply, I still live in a very local area, eat at my local street food market just about every day, frequent my local cafe, hire locals when I can and embrace the culture as I am a visitor in this amazing country. Also glad you touched on the realities of visa complexity. If you ever pop back into Bangkok I'd love to buy you a drink at my local watering hole. cheers.

Warm greetings from KohPhangan Thailand. Thanks Luc for sharing your story - is inspiring - and great suggestions, I lived and did some documentary work in Nairobi and Bangkok - both excellent places to set up home base and work from there in the SEA or East Africa. I enjoyed your story. I had quit my 9-5 job and decided to relocate from EU to Thailand to pursue the documentary film&photo work - so what you shared resonates with me. The cost of living might be a bit up now but plenty of stories throughout SEAsia to be told with fresh eyes - thats what had been calling me to come and live here past 10 years - now finally here to stay long term.

Luc. How about going locally? (That will be internationally for you😅). I am thinking to start here in Israel. I tried firt with regular video about here, but after watching your video and VOD (Mark), i have decided to change gears and focus on Documentary. Israel is a facinating place, in every word. I just want to learn how to tell people's stories and believe me there are plenty. Thanks for your videos

Great tips Luc! I especially appreciate your advice on supporting local businesses when traveling abroad. Besides supporting the local economy I've found it's the best way to meet locals and get "insider" information. Getting off the beaten track is where I have always found the most unique and memorable gems of a local culture. So I can certainly understand why this is important for networking in the documentary filmmaking space and finding the best opportunities for stories. Thanks as always!

Hey, Luc! This feels like the perfect opportunity to say Thank you! I think you were the one to inspire me to do documentaries when I first stumbled on your channel in the early summer. I'm currently shooting my first project, and feeling incredibly inspired by the characters I've chosen. I'm slightly terrified of how I'll edit this together to tell the story in the best way possible, but it's super exciting at the same time. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Great video, I already said it in one of your posts, for me Ukraine was the place I learned to shoot in. It was my home for 5 years and I only left due to war, I was back in May filming for my organization during wartime, it was intense. A year before the war, I almost gave up on making videos, but fell back in love with my camera and telling stories close to my heart. It's been a heart breaking season in life, but the silver lining is when one door closes another one opens. My wife is from the Philippines, we took a job in the Philippines to be close to her family, she has been away for 15 years, and the Philippines is where our story started. My work is not fulltime film making, but I look forward to telling stories through film and photography. Who knows maybe one day I'll be doing it professionally. So right now there're only two places on Earth I want to be, first Ukraine, for 5 years I gave the people my heart and soul they will always be my family and it will always be my home, and second is the Philippines, the origin story for my wife and I. Don't get me wrong as an American I love my country but it's the last place I want to be. A great video, thanks for making it, you offer a lot of value!

Awesome video thank you for the insight! I’m wondering what you do once you get there. Do you start shooting your own stuff and pitch to others, or do you start looking for doc work immediately? How do you start getting paid jobs doing doc work internationally?
@LucForsyth
Жыл бұрын
If we're talking about money, In the beginning I think pitching is the best way. Make short films and then pitch them to online outlets and news sites and also send them to NGOs in related fields. Newspapers often need stringers in international locations, and NGOs have lots of visual campaigns that are a good source of paid video work in the same ball park as doc. How to get hired on large scale international shoots is a little different, and mostly about building strong networks in the places where the production companies are. New York is a big place for doc production, so if you want to get jobs on a crew instead of making your own stuff, I'd look there. I made a guide on networking you can download in the description. Good luck!

Hi Luc. I live on the border in south Texas and would like some advice for traveling in Mexico safely and tips for protecting your gear. And how stressful was it filming for a cartel?
@LucForsyth
Жыл бұрын
Nice, I spent a lot of time down there in laredo and Corpus areas. I would t say I want filming FOR the cartel though, just with them - and there’s no sugar coating it, it was stressful! My best advice is to hire a local prodcuer you trust and listen to their sense of safety. In general day to day stuff mexico isn’t dangerous, it’s just that wrong place at the wrong time stuff that can surprise you. Local knowledge is always the best safety. Good luck!

How did you deal with the loneliness that comes with moving alone? Personally I always wanted to travel the world a lot (still a bit too young for that). And the thought of being alone both excites me and scares me.
@LucForsyth
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's a real thing. It's usually quite easy to meet people when travelling, both other travellers and locals, but it's not the same thing as your community at home. I do pretty well most of the time, but from time to time when you're in a place that isn't agreeing with you for whatever reason it can get lonely - not gonna lie! But at the same time there's so much happening around you that it's easy to move past it and focus on what you're experiencing. If you're not sure about the whole thing, start with a smaller trip for a few weeks or a month and then see how it feels.
