Also maybe this is why I couldn't really figure out how to effectively use MEC anyway, but why are the angles so low? @AdamTheEnginerd

@@icetheking4310 Pitch angle changes with speed because if the prop had a fixed pitch, it would get easier and easier to spin the prop as the aircraft accelerates because the propeller will be seeing a lower angle of attack or a smaller "bite" of air as the aircraft goes faster. Props in WW2 were constant speed propellers, so the pitch angle of the propeller would change with speed to keep RPM constant and to stay close to the more efficient angle of attack for the propeller. What angles are low? I think the confusion stems from the fact that you don't know that German prop pitch works differently than for every other nation. For the Germans, prop pitch % will give a pitch angle directly, while for other aircraft, prop pitch % gives the target RPM instead. It's also why this trick would only work on German aircraft. Except for German aircraft, the general rule is prop pitch = throttle.

May I ask how set your MEC controls up specifically for duelling and quick use? For example I set the prop pitch control so it resets when I let go of it. This means I can use the prop pitch just like a handbrake really quickly. I do not set it up like that for bombers as you have the time to precisely set things up. How do you do it for best convenience?

If by dueling you mean in custom battles and tournaments, you get a timer at the start. Here you can turn automatic prop pitch off, set the pitch to 65-70% (depending on which 109) and then set automatic prop pitch on again so that when you get to 180kph ias and below you can quickly press the button to turn off auto pp. You musn't forget to turn it back on auto when you get above 180kph though, otherwise your engine will be leaving the chat.
@Leon_der_Luftige

BlitzkriegBarry Thanks for the tip. So far I left prop pitch on "keep value of axis" = no, so I can, as explained earlier let the "handbrake" snap back to normal. Otherwise, if I use the 100% prop pitch air brake and put it back to automatic, I keep on wrecking the engine. That is because from my experience the game needs a couple moments to readjust the prop settings correctly after reengaging auto engine control so you can't just flip it back and instantly throttle up again in the heat of a fight and you just don't know how long you got to wait... But that's enough yackety yack from my part. It's all 1st world problems anyway. :)

As an aircraft mechanic, i am proud of you for figuring out prop pitch, and how you can use that to your advantage in-game. 95% of all prop airplanes' propellers can have their pitch adjusted. They can go from a *full feather,* (which is when the blade is perpendicular to the direction of movement) to a full 90° "flat" position. Turboprop propellers can even go all the way into reverse. They slow down on landing this way. Now on most planes, this is a more or less automatic process, for the most efficient operation. The pitch is reduced as your throttle and RPM increases, and increased as you lower your power & RPM. The only control you have is adjusting the upper and lower limits of that, using an RPM lever type control in the cockpit. On a piston aircraft, you have three such controls. Throttle, mixture, and RPM. On a turboprop, you only have two: power and RPM. When you shut your plane down, the best practice is to bring your RPM all the way either up or down. It covers the pitch changing mechanism, and protects it from the outside world. On a turboprop, it's much more important to do this because it also prevents your propeller and engine from pinwheeling in the wind. This prevents an unlubricated engine from turning, and wearing excessively. Hope you enjoyed this bit of knowledge. *Would you like to know more?*

Hey Adam very interesting thing you said about propellors, check for yourself in game. The G14AS has wider diameter propellor blades than any other 109. This trick would probably work extra well with it then. I have alot to say so I'm gonna condense everything into one comment to not spawn the comments section. So the wider the diameter of the propellor the more it can convert engine power into propellor efficiency at low speeds? From your G14 AS video I remember you recommended not using WEP in 109s in low speed vertical stalls, does it say mean if not using MEC but just reducing throttle and automatically pitch, you would still get better propellor efficiency in vertical stall?
@AdamTheEnginerd
4 жыл бұрын
So it also has a bigger landing gear? Because the diameter can't increase much without running the risk of hitting the prop on the ground. If it does indeed have a bigger diameter, then it would need this trick less than other Bf109s. I think it was in my G2 video saying I'm laying off WEP at low speed to cool down since it doesn't affect thrust much. You get better prop efficiency by reducing throttle, but then you have less power to convert into thrust so you still lose on thrust.

In war thunder this really isnt too useful. And in il2 sturmovik it isnt either. Because by the time you fall back down you gain rpm way to fast and if your not really experienced you will reavvh the 3000rpm real quick, which WILL leave you with a very oily windhsield and a broken engine. And as you can already not see much out of the k4 the last thing you want is for your engine to die in a dogfight. During combat you usually leave the rom controll/ prop pitch on auto, it really only takes a second after sttalling to completely destroy your engine. Please dint do it. In the 109e1 which doesnt have automatic prop pitch, fine but try to keep the warning indicators in view and especially keep an eye on your ata. And in qar thunder it makes no sens ecause the game is too arcady for this to make sense
@AdamTheEnginerd

If you understand the limits, you won't destroy your engine. And you have a certain grace period, you need to overrev for a couple of seconds to start taking damage.+

A little late to the party, but.... Is there a point when torque overwhelms control authority as IAS reduces? Does Gaijin not model that as it could cause too many ground loops thanks to the Me 109’s infamous narrow track landing gear? Or is not really a problem as long as you are paying careful attention to the throttle and propeller pitch angle?

There's no torque in RB, but in SB there definitely is, you can't aim well if you're below stall speed in SB.

Hi Adam,i have an unrelated suggestion,i would like to see you fly out the ta-154,its in the warbond shop and im going to get it very soon but have no idea how to fly it because i never really played a twin engined fighter in an anti air role because they seemed inferior to single engined fighters,but the ta-154 caught my eye because it seems to have pretty good speed and respectable turn for a twin engined plane and i would like to see you fly it and showcase its strenghts and drawbacks,i know there are other videos from other youtubers about this plane but i find your videos to be by far the most helpfull and very easy to understand and learn from.
