I liked Siri more than I liked Vivenna, but I definitely agree that Vivenna changed the most over the course of the story.

Almost every other character overshadowed Vivenna for me, but that might just be because she annoyed me for 75% of the story 😅. I felt like Siri, Lightsong, and somehow Vasher were the protagonists. I did really love Vivenna’s arc though! And of course with Cosmere connections she’s even more interesting.

Hard agree. I've suggested elsewhere that any adaptation of Warbreaker needs to slightly rework things to focus more on Vivenna's story. Having multiple viewpoints works for the book, but wouldn't work nearly so well in film or television.

Spoiler warning, but only in a general sense, nothing specific. Also cw: references to gun violence I first read Warbreaker years ago, when I was in 8th/9th grade. At the time, Vivenna's story was my least favorite in the book. It lacked the charm of Lightsong's story, the intrigue and romance of Siri's story, or the mystery and action of Vasher's story. Watching her parade around talking to people and showing off her hair just wasn't as interesting as the other 3 plots. It was cool seeing her become a fledgling badass and her own antithesis by the end of the book but I felt like her character came to a head a bit too quickly, like she came to all the right conclusions about how she was wrong before as if she had a little angel on her shoulder whispering the answers to her philosophy test into her ear. Having reread Warbreaker recently, I can confidently say that 14-year-old me had NO taste. Vivenna's story is so very moving, powerful, and HUMAN that it leaves me in awe. The text itself takes every single complaint I just listed, takes them out back, and lovingly shoots them in the back of the head as they look at the flowers, I guess I just didn't know how to fucking read at the time. For one, the talking to people is really cool actually cause it develops Denth (another great character) and the crew, plants the seeds of each conclusion she eventually comes to by the end, lightly shakes the foundation of Vivenna's judgemental, zealous, and overly self-righteous beliefs, and finally sets up and gloriously foreshadows several plot and character twists that make me giddy just thinking about (Parlin best boy don't @ me). Super long sentences aside, the conclusions Vivenna comes to at the end are foreshadowed well in advance, sped along by her montage of suffering. She's also not nearly as instantly badass as I remember, she's clumsy and untrained and that makes her feats all the more awesome. The moment when she manages to catch a certain someone off guard with her stance is permanently imprinted in my mind. All in all Vivenna's story is a timeless tale about a girl learning to think in more than black and white until she's grown too much to go back to her old life. It's a story about the healing powers of humility and open-mindedness, and how holding yourself to them can make you a better person, while dogmatic good vs evil-ism gets you nowhere. It's fucking amazing, and I highly, HIGHLY recommend this book, especially if you plan to or have already read the Stormlight Archive, you just might notice a few familiar faces in that series ;). Also an unimportant detail I find hilarious and kind of sad is the fact that Vivenna's version of flying off the rails and acting drunk on newfound freedom is mildly snarking at people. Poor girl is REPRESSED. I could go on but I think I've rambled enough at this point, I should probably actually watch the video now. Sorry, I just really had to get all that off my chest somewhere, even if that place is being buried in the yt comment section.

I agree i love your comment, I just finished the book and Vivenna is a treat to read her parts. I think her change was fantastic i like how she adapts and use what she learns or sees, probably something she picked up from studying as a kid. Yes, the way she got one over her opponents was great and she uses all the tricks in her disposal. Lessons she learn from both friend and foe.
