You're a natural! This already looks so much better than a lot of what I see at my local game store haha. Also Black and red are usually pretty difficult to highlight and do well. A lof of people use shades of blue or grey to highlight black, and red is hard to highlight without it turning pink or orange. Maybe look into a painting handle so you do have to hold the mini and possibly rub paint off. I just use a cylinder shaped block of wood with double sided tape to hold the mini

Late commenting, this mini is a very good improvement on your last one. Well done. You're working in thin layers and experimenting I would definitely continue working on that and since you're going with Blood Angels I'd recommend some Assault Intercessors or Jump Intercessors if you can get them for cheap. They will compliment your chaplain's nicely. Edit: If you like Nuln Oil I highly recommend Agrax Earthshade and Seraphim Sepia for any bone and gold elements you paint in the future for a more warmer feel to the gold.

It seemed to me, that you did more of a dabbing motion on your head "drybrush", which resulted in a more spreckled look. Normally you would clean the brush a little bit more on a paper towel or a other surface (maybe use a normal palette, or thick paper, when you dont want the "dusty" look on the drybrush). You may also take the sprue of a model and start drybrushing there a bit first until you have the wanted amount of paint left on your brush. When you have the right amount of paint you start going in fast sideway motions on the areas you want to drybrush so the tips of the brush hairs rub off the paint on the raised areas. Little bit hard to describe in writing 😀.This technique is used for edge highlighting, so you don't need the layering step after that. But it depends on the effect you want to create 🙂. Really great job on your second Mini! Welcome to the hobby! I wish you all the fun you can have with it!

It looks great, love that you're trying new things and new paint brands. I will say that black and white are pretty widely regarded as the most difficult colours to get shade and highlight well. Blue is pretty easy to do and if you wanted something a little more medieval feeling maybe try a Phobos Librarian. All librarians wear blue armour but you can still paint their chapter colour on their shoulders

Fantastic job! You’ve already made a ton of progress since your first model! Just keep practicing and check out some hobby videos on KZitem like Vince Venturella’s Hobby Cheating series if you have questions or need pointers. It’s so cool to see someone taking their first steps! For your next model, you might want to look at an Ork or maybe a Necron. Still fairly straight forward to paint and something different than power armour! Great video, and I can’t wait to see the next!

Red is a really tricky color to start out with because it's difficult to highlight if you don't know how. It can often end up looking pink or orange. A good trick for getting a lighter red color without making it pink or orange is to mix your base red color with one of those bone or flesh colors. (but not the contrast paint) Blues and greens are the friendliest newbie colors.

Looks good, especially for your second ever mini! However, your drybrushing needs some work. It looked like what you were doing on the helmet was something called stippling, which gives you that dotted pattern instead. If you just sweep the brush across the part it'll catch all the raised areas and you'll get nice highlights easily. To be clear, you want to start and end the motion with the brush not even touching the mini, and repeat until you're happy with it. And don't be afraid to be rough! It's supposed to be quite a messy technique, so you usually want to do all your drybrushing first before moving on to any other steps. I hope that made sense and that it helps!

Sometimes it's easier to mount sub assemblies to a painting handle. I use corks and paper clips. Just need to drill in to the piece or use a small amount of superglue. It'll save you needing to handle the piece. Great video! Looking forward to the next.

Remember sometimes, especially when painting a lighter color over a darker color, you need to make multiple passes. Multiple thin coats. You're almost never going to get good coverage of white over black in one pass. Do a thin coat, let it dry, then do another thin coat, and see where to go from there.

It's okay if the edge highlighting is thick, because you eventually want to learn to add additional thinner, lighter layers on top of them. A lot of people have the opposite problem.

14:10 I think the main use for transfers is to give a more specific identity to generic units in your army. So if you got, say, some generic blue guys with jet packs, you could paint them red and give them transfers, to make them blood angels. Then this chaplain could lead them. But "chaplain with jet pack" is already unique to the Blood Angels, so he doesn't need a transfer.

Oh man, again its hard to tell you're a beginner. Next thing you need is the mini holder. Dont buy one, just find something that is comfortable in your hand that you can then just use tacky stuff to stick it to the top that way your fingers dont get dirty which can then accidentally put paint in places you held it. The white came out well, you wanted it to highlight where light hits. For edge highlights, try using the side of the brush bristles, not the tip (much easier) With washes, you should try applying it after your main coat and that way you can come back with the original color and it will brighten it back up for your highlights. Get one of you old blush brushes and clean it so u can use it for the drybrushing. Next try to do the spray Zenythol or your white drybrushing over the model after you prime it. That will give you a highlight start plus you can see more details when you start adding your main colors. Its hard for me to see all those details with black paint. Are you a MeraLuna fan? Ive been trying to get over to EU to see it. keep it up!

If you're doing something super fine and you don't want your hands shaky, press the heels of your palms together and hold the brush much closer to the tip. The difficulty with the eyes is you're holding the brush too far back.

Edge Highlighting: First of all I hate the way that Games Workshop seem to think that every panel needs to have every edge highlighted. How can the light be hitting all of those edges, no matter the direction and still not just light up the whole panels 🤷♂ Secondly, Imagine the gesture of scolding someone where you point a finger at them while stroking across it with the forefinger of your other hand (like "tsk tsk, naughty naughty"). This is a good tip for controlling edge highlights. Rather than trying to use your brush tip to paint along the edge; use the side of the brush instead. Generally for highlighting, White should be saved for the most extreme and smallest of absolute peak highlights. You're better off using a really really light version of the same colour. If you want to mix it without desaturating the colour too much, use something like Ivory (the Vallejo one is great) instead of a pure White.

Keep in mind the skull itself is a helmet. That's not actually his skull. It's a mask. It's made of painted metal, not bone.
@Alice_Aura

@bad-people6510

@@Alice_Aura Well it's painted to look like a skull. It can be painted other ways. It could be unpainted, painted poorly, scratched, chipped etc. This goes for most of the skulls on them by the way. Most of them aren't real, cast from metal, and even the ones that are can easily be gilded or otherwise metal plated. You don't have to paint bone if you don't want to.
