It's really important that Mystic Arcanum does not use a spell slot - so you can cast a levelled spell as well on your turn (likely using your Bonus Action).

I’m curious what you guys think, how good of a build would it be to make a 2024 Warlock and take the legacy Hexblade patron at level 3? Interesting exercise to test the backward compatibility, but with the change to Pact of the Blade, is the legacy Hexblade patron completely redundant? I’d love to see a video about it since straight Hexblade was such a force to recon with in the legacy game.
@greenandgarb
Ай бұрын
The legacy Hexblade is now essentially redundant. The two biggest losses are being able to take shield as part of the expanded spell list and no more medium armor proficiency, but if you take the archfey patron you never have to worry about being hit anyways!

My first video watching your content. Great chemistry, solid presentation of information, Absolutely subscribed. If I can offer one bit of feedback. The camera or at least the video seems to always want to constantly move in/zoom in. Because at times things are edited, the camera constantly moving, any tiny little edit is very jarring as it snaps to a different focus in the middle of a sentence. I do understand wanting to make it dynamic, but try to find another way, please. :) I will certainly watch your videos going forward, but wanted to offer something I hope will help. Luck to you both!

Im planning a Warlock (the great one) with the new rules for a table. There’re plenty of awesome features and combos with all invocations, but I think Hexblade melee is a bit tough, since we don’t get medium armor or shield with the pact anymore. Besides, heavy weapons now ask STH +13
@greenandgarb
Ай бұрын
You can make any weapon your pact weapon and use charisma to wield it under pact of the blade now. Losing the armor and shield is rough, but playing something like archfey, where you can constantly teleport around the battlefield more than makes up for the lost durability with increased survivability.
@tiagoleivas3495
Ай бұрын
@@greenandgarb sure, but even a pact weapon halbert is heavy, so you may be proficient but still need 13 STH to use. You can build with this stat, but then you will probably have a low CON or DEX. On 5e, to use a heavy weapon the only requirement was to be medium or larger, now it depends on stats.

I like a lot of what they did but so many obvious misses as well. Armor of shadows needed a buff but it got a nerf(a really minor nerf), being able to put agonizing blast on other cantrips sounds cool until you realize the only practical choice is still eldritch blast. It could just add to all cantrips with no real problem, same with repelling blast which also did not need a nerf, let them be the only shove huge/gargantuan class. It was their gimmick and again was not a balance problem. Their capstone was bad in 2014, its worse now. While stuff is backwards compatible, there are new players and people who want a fresh just use the main books start so the invocation list is really short. Pact of tome, chain need more invocations.

The power of eldritch blast was it's multiple ATTACKS at 5th lvl and above. Other cantrips scale damage but blast scaled via attacks so the ability to use invocations on other cantrips SOUNDS fantastic but like so much of the warlocks design means using anything other than 'X' is suboptimal. Agonizing blast becomes increasingly more powerful the higher your charisma and number of attacks. 2d10 + 8(avg 19) is better than 2d12 + 4(avg.17). When charisma gets to 20 and attacks get to 3. This gap increases even more. Also 3 attacks at 1d10+5 means you are more likely to get crits and more likely to do some damage as no single bad roll tanks all your damage from a cantrip. Again its the wow look at the choice warlocks get... well really the suboptimal choices lag behind the best choice so much that i really am not given a fair choice only the illusion of choice.

I just wanted to add the warlock could ALWAYS get three attacks per round with eldritch blast. The warlock's mechanics were always closer to a fighter as a warlock got their extra attack with eldritch blast the same lvl as a fighter.

unfortunately, I'm not a fan of selecting your patron at level 3 vs 1st. the whole point of the warlock is that the character made a pact with their patron in order to get their powers. doing it this way diminishes the class. they could've kept the pact boon at 3 but instead of what it was before, have it unlock the main ability of the patron. it still does what they're trying to do while keeping it true to the flavor of the class.
@vindex57
Ай бұрын
@@loneshadow9656 I don't mind the standardisation. I see it as the warlock dabbling in general occult lore and magic before reaching the ceiling of what power that can give them before needing a patron to grow further. Or you already have your patron, but at level 3 you start getting your patron-specific gifts instead of general occult magic.
@brilobox2
Ай бұрын
Or…use your imagination for 5 seconds. Level 3 is when the patron actually gives you the goods, their own particular brand of magic, instead of the generic pittance they were giving you up until that point. It diminishes nothing but the small mind.

@@vindex57 but the whole point of the warlock is they're getting their power from the pact they made with their patron. the fact that they changed it to where you don't select your patron until 3rd takes away from what made the class unique. I like what they did with the invocations and making the original pact boons into invocations but now it just feels like it's no different than any other spellcasting class

@@brilobox2 I'm guessing you never played a warlock before. The whole point of the warlock class is that the character made a deal with a particular patron to get their power. the fact that they changed that to where they don't select their patron until 3rd, takes away what made the class unique and more flavorful. There are ways they could still do what they're trying to do without taking away from the class, but they just made it to where it's no different than any other spellcasting class. And a small mind would fight tooth and nail to defend something that blatantly takes away from what made it fun to play.

So the biggest thing Jeremy Crawford and Chris Perkins emphasized in the panels we attended at Gencon is they assume and encourage most players start at level 3. Levels 1-2 are more meant for new players to get a handle on the rules. I know not all of the changes are ideal for everyone, but keeping in mind their vision gives some insight into the decision.
