@MrFantocan big facts. And I think one of the most interesting backstory a player used with me was that she came from a family that used to be a Noble line of sorcerer's with dragon ancestry but over time the bloodline got watered down and they went generations without a drop of magic so they lost their title and she was the first one born with magic so she wanted to raise her family back into nobility.

I think a good way to make the warlock better and more fun is giving them a few spells from their patreons that they can use once per day (archfey will get stuff like faerie fire, plant growth, and more nature spells, great old ones will get the hadar and tentacle spells, etc.)

Aww but I've always loved the idea of a sorcerer. Someone born with magic had no choice. They have to experience their magic naturally and often their first experiences are often chaotic and even dangerous. They are also magical creatures, unlike every other spell caster, they are just visitors, observers and manipulators of magic. Only the sorcerer can say they are magic. Sorcerer has my favorite story building elements.
@NorseDungeonMaster

@LoreFoundry this is a fair point of view. I've never really thought of it this way. That does make them slightly more interesting. However in my opinion they are still less interesting than making a deal with some powerful being, usually a diety or devil of some sort, to obtain an affinity for magic

The only Sorcerer subclass I like is the Wild Magic Sorcerer. It has a unique table of abilities you don't find anywhere else and a unique method of using it. The others just borrow their magic from the Cleric and Wizard spell lists and cast them with conventional spell slots. The general "magic just happens to me" justification only fits with Wild Magic, in my mind. Otherwise, Sorcerer just feels like a really optimized Wizard with no RP justification whatsoever. Of course it's the better choice to take. It's pure power creep. Meanwhile, Warlock has been left in the dust. There has been years of player data to improve upon an already very flexible and unique class. We know what the Warlock needs by now. They need more goodies when picking a Pact Boon. With the power creep of the more recent supplements, some restrictions on Eldritch Invocations need to go. Warlocks don't need much to have a little more bite.

I love wild magic! It's super fun and keeps everyone on their toes, so I completely understand where you're coming from here. Yeah, everyone knows that warlocks need help, and we can sit here and hope WOTC fixes their mistakes. Though, in all honesty, they haven't been the greatest in listening to the player base in the past. It breaks my heart to say it (mostly because of how interesting the warlock class has the ability to be from a roleplay standpoint) but I think for the most part warlocks are going to remain an under utilized class.

I get where you're coming from to an extent. And if you put everything in a broad scope there are 3 classes: Mage, Warrior, and Archer. If you see the playtest 7 warlock of the unearthed arcana, you'll like what you see, they buffed the warlock a lothe gets 2 extra invocations, 1 at level 1 and 1 at level 5, they made pact boons eldritch invocations (wich mean you can have many pact booms at once), buffed then and fused then with an already existing invocation (pact of the tome now gives an extra level 1 spell slot and it includes the functions of the "book of ancient secrets" invocation, pact of the chain allows you to use find familiar with an action (instead of a 1 hour cast) and without material components and gives you 2 new familiar forms, the skeleton and the slaad tadpole (wich can be put inside a person to one day become a fully functional slaad), and if you have an extra attack feature or the thirsting blade eldritch invocation, you sacrifice 1 of your attacks to make your familiar attack, not your action, pact of the blade makes you able to attack with charisma instead of strengh or dexterity and allows you to switch the damege type of your weapon to either necrotic, psychic or radiant damege, and thirsting blade gives you another extra attack once you reach level 11 on the warlock class, and the level requirement on many invocations have been reduced, there's also a repeatable invocation called "lessons of the first ones" that allows you to pick a feat instead of an evocation, so your warlock can theoreticaly have 10 extra feats if you sacrifice your eldritch invocations (but the pact booms are still better then feats so you should still pick at least 1 of then). And that's not even the subclass buffs, wich are also very powerful, not only all subclasses now gain their class spells for free when they can cast then (so you don't have to sacrifice your known spells from your table to get them), but their features also improved a lot. For exemple: the archfey warlock can cast misty step a withous using spell slots a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and misty step have extra features in this subclass, such as giving allies temporary hit points, or a forced duel-like feature, where you can make an enemy have disadvantage on any attack roll against creatures that aren't you, at level 6 you can cast misty step as a reaction to taking damege, with exptra possibilities, such as turning invisible so no one knows where you teleported to or inflict 2d10 psychic damege on a nearby target, your beguiling defenses now can be used when a creature makes an attack roll against you, it halves the damege and deals an amount of psychic damege back to the attacker equal to the damege you took, you can use it once per long rest unless you use a spell slot to use it again, you and can even use any illision or enchantment school spells + the buffed misty step in 1 action on level 14. The great old one patron can switch the damege type of any warlock spell to psychic damege and cast illusion and enchantment spells without verbal or somatic components on level 3, at level 6 you can make yourself have advantage against 1 specific target and make then have disadvantage against you once per short rest if they fail a wisdom save, wich you can still do agains if you sacrifice a level 2 or higher spell slot, at level 10 they are resistent to psychic damege, imune to mind reading, can reflect psychic damege back at the attacker and when casting hex (wich from level 10 onwards they always have it prepared) you can also give the target disadvantage on a saving throws of your choice for the duration, and at level 14 you can use the summon aberration spell without neading concentration, the summoned creature receives temporary hit points equal to your warlock level and their attacks deal extra psychic damege to hexed targets. They made the warlock much more fun to play as in this playtest.

Also depends heavily on party composition, I would hesitate to pick warlock if I was the only player getting resources back on a short rest. I might disagree with you in invocations giving less options than meta magic, invocations have dozens of options that change playstyle even changing your warlock into an infiltrator if you wish.
@NorseDungeonMaster
Ай бұрын
This is all very true! The main reason I say invocations give you less options than meta magic is because with meta magic you can youse anyone you want anytime so long as you have the sorcery points available. Whereas woth eldritch invocation you are locked in with whichever ones you picked only able to swap them out at when you would learn new ones. While I do concede that eldritch invocations are amazing their lack of interchangeabilty makes them less versatile than meta magic. For instance if at the 3rd level you multi class away from warlock and never put anymore levels into warlock you are stuck with whatever invocations you originally chose for the rest of that characters lifespan
@LoreFoundry
Ай бұрын
I'd say, though there are fewer total meta magic options, you can use each of them in more cases. Right? Because an invocation just grants you a single feature, mage armor at will, proficiency in skills, single casts of spells. Where the sorcerer can twin different spells for different outcomes. So id argue, the Warlock can customize their mechanical flavor better, but a sorcerer can manipulate their magic to the highest degree.

Why chose one or the other. Aberrant mind 3 Gemini’s warlock 17 pact of the tome with book of ancient secrets at level 20 (I know most campaigns never get that far) is the best utility caster in the game even over the Wizard at 20. That Sorlock just always has the spell that will solve the problem, it’s kinda ridiculous.

Divine Soul sorcerers aren't so boring, if the player and DM make their connection with whatever deity they choose a similar thing to the Warlocks deal, but kind of a Sugar Daddy/Mommy kind of way. Plus having access to the entire Cleric list of spells when leveling up is a big boon.

@@NorseDungeonMaster We *had* a Devotion paladin in our party that sacrificed himself to save my character, who would've died with him otherwise. It was a very strong narrative moment, the paladin dissolved into glittering light to protect her as he died, people at the table were crying, etc. And me and the paladin player had the idea of my character now multiclassing into being a Divine Soul sorcerer, because his devotion and sacrifice had touched her soul with his divine last wish of protecting her. Our DM approved, so we're rolling with it. She wasn't a charisma user prior, so she's selecting pretty much exclusively buff-utility spells, and when she casts them it's with the same flavour/descriptions as what our paladin used. Our whole table got deeply into our feelings about it, but it was a beautiful arc that added a lot of emotional and narrative weight to a beloved character. You can do Divine Soul in ways that are meaningful and add depth, you just have to look for opportunities and ways to make it mesh.

Sorcerers w/o a doubt. The lack of spell slots on Warlocks is absolutely debilitating. Which is why 2 level dip warlock and other levels into Sorcerer is the best of both worlds. I've been playing an Air Genasi Warlock/Sorcerer for almost three years no in Dungeon of the Mad Mage. Genie Warlock 3/Clockwork soul Sorcerer 14 as of May 2024. We had a regular Wizard in the group, but he was behind me in the power curve at pretty much every point except level 5 when he got Fireball one level before me. He had to leave the campaign before level 17. I think at 17 he would have caught up for a few levels, because _Wish_ would have given him _Simulacrum._ . But at level 17 for 2 sorcery points in Quicken Spell, you're firing off 8 eldritch blasts per turn, that's 8d10 + 40, more if you use Hex, but I'm typically using concentration for something else at this point. That's higher than _Disintegrate_. At 20 my character gets _Wish_ as well, but we'll probably only be 20 for the final boss battle. People debate 2 vs 3 levels of Warlock but I've had zero regrets about taking three levels. My intelligent imp with opposable thumbs, invisibility at will and her own attunement slots for magic items has been clutch more times than I can count. And two level two pact spell slots is the equivalent of the Sorcerer level 20 capstone, but better - and I got to use it starting at level 8. Between levels 5-15 being able to regenerate sorcery points on a short rest is HUGE.
