Of all the games for the VCS I think this one holds up the best as far as family fun

The time and effort and you put into these videos are amazing, I love this! I do have to ask though, what are you going to do when you reach 1982? There are so many 2600 games in 1982 and 1983…

My current plan is to continue with the single episodes for major releases, and make episodes covering multiple games for others - like if Apollo puts out four games in a month (which they did) I'll just go over all four of them in one video. Hopefully it'll work out!

I always imagined this as space ships bouncing an asteroid at each others shields. I always thought it looked like a space station in the corner. I never saw the arcade version till the internet came out.

To be honest, I'd only ever seen the arcade version twice. The first time was during a school field trip in 1982. We had gone to Hershey Park, but in spite of being in a huge amusement park, the trip overall was a bust. A torrential rain storm happened, and we all ran for cover. I ended up being in the largest arcade I'd ever seen in my life. In fact, there's a place local to me called Crabtowne USA. It has terrible seafood, an absolutely divine bar, and 300 arcade machines (most of which are vintage). In spite of how big that is, it is still smaller than the one in Hershey Park. Nonetheless, the first time I saw it was at that arcade years ago. It was also the only one that they had, while others such as Zaxxon, Turbo, Dig Dug, and Congo Bongo were as many as a dozen each. I ended up staying in that arcade for four hours. The rain was so bad that they started putting sandbags at the entrances because there was some shallow flooding. I still have dreams about that trip. Anyway, the second time I saw it was in 2018, and that was at the other place I mentioned. Again it was just one solitary machine. The next time I visited though, it was gone.

It's nice to see the progress through 1981. I hadn't heard of Warlords before, but I can see why it was such a hit game.

The variation I remember best is Lords of Lunar, a mini-game that Working Designs inserted as an Easter egg into the US release of Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete for PS1.

Oh hey! I wrote that! A few cool things about Lords of Lunar: It is one of the few games to use the high resolution interlace mode on the PS1! It lets you have up to 8 players by using 2 multitaps. You can configure the size of the blocks in your castle and many other settings to greatly customize the game. I included the ability of dead player "ghosts" to influence the trajectory of the ball, allowing for collusion. I don't think I got it quite right tho. It's more based on the VCS version than the arcade version, but it does include multiball. Anyway, it is hard to find these days, but if you have Lunar with th Making of Movie disc, press up, down, left, right, triangle, start in sequence while the movie is playing to access the game.

I played this with my teenage boys for the first time and they really enjoyed it, especially the arcade version.

ah! Me and a friend just got this game working on the 2600 I was testing out for the first time. :> I had played it a decent amount as a 6 or 7 year old on the PC arcade collection we had but I was surprised when it booted up and I recognized the game.

Warlords also got 3 different reimagined versions on Xbox 360 (2008, 2008, 2011), one as a native release with a medieval theme, quirky characters, new powerups and local play, another in that was an upgraded version of the first with new features + online play, along with another title via Xbox Live Arcade; a snazzy, sleek and sci-fi version where you can set an imported picture as your castle and play either locally or online, it's pretty great!

Another good homebrew clone is Space Lords for the Commodore 64. It uses a space setting, but is otherwise the same game. It has various game modes, supports up to four players using paddles, mice, joysticks, and keyboard. You'll need an adapter to play with four joysticks though. Lord of War - Just wanted to mention that this Amiga game adds to Warlords by introducing spells. If you catch the ball while it's glowing, you gain spell points. To use them, you catch the ball, push the joystick toward whatever corner of the screen you're playing in, and release the button. A menu will pop up listing all the spells and you can cast any of the ones you have enough energy for, like slowing down the ball, or instantly destroying one of the opponents.

I suppose this is what they played in 1980 instead of Golden Eye and Mario Kart

Always great to see the CoCo get mentioned. Radio Shack sold a cartridge called Castle Guard which was also a Warlords implementation, two players like the other CoCo Tom Mix game you showed.

If you ever get a bar, restaurant, arcade the tabletop arcade version with real backgrounds is the best. Faithfully emulated on the Atari Vault but whoops not on Steam anymore. Serious though - 4 player glass top table where the 2D arcade graphics are projected over a plastic injection mold/painted background. It's a simple game, really Pong but on another level - but so much fun! People will play it forever.

Atari Logbook challenge: play game 14 with the difficulty switch on B. Pro (Worthy Opponent): 3 wins, Master (Fearless Foe): 4 wins, Wizard (Invincible): 5 wins. I don't remember playing this with other kids, and maybe got it later on the cheap. Sometime in the 1990s I won 5-4-2-0. Only a few more games in the 1982 Logbook to go and I haven't heard of a 1983 version. Shame.

Good stuff. I wonder if anyone knows the origins of the Special Feature bear labelling on Atari games, like Warlord. Whose idea was it, and what brought it to come about?
@sandal_thong8631

If you mean the "Special Edition" label, from watching these reviews they seem to correspond to games that used a 4K ROM instead of the standard 2K. Even so, he says they had to trim the code on games like Missile Command to fit (episode 54). Perhaps they cost the consumer more and needed something flashy to justify it? In 1982 they'd be making some games with an 8K ROM.
