One of the reasons you guys are so popular is because you’re a mental vacation for us. We get to escape with you into a beautiful world. If someone else hasn't mentioned it: To keep fruit from coloring the batter toss fruit in flour before adding to your batter. This will also keep fruit from sinking to the bottom of your baked goods, like cakes, muffins, etc. Happy Baking!

I watch several homesteading family channels but am most intrigued by yours. Everything you do from bee keeping to surviving the winter months to growing a most fabulous garden and preserving most of your food is absolutely AMAZING. I'm an old lady now and sometimes wish I had taken advantage of the homesteading lifestyle as a younger woman, but honestly, I doubt I could have spent my days 24/7 with the significant other as you two do let alone in such a cold climate. Again...it's just amazing what you have accomplished since the day you first arrived to move into the cabin!

Me, too. I wish there were more like this one, with living off the garden, the fishing, and the hunting, preserving it all. So many set in Alaska or the Yukon are just hunting and fishing, usually some guy on his own. Or it is just gardening, no hunting or fishing. They don't have the charm of this couple or the element of what it takes to really live the way Eric and Ariel do.

Homesteading is a lot of daily, endless work. We spend far more of our day, every day splitting wood, prepping food, tending animals and gardens, fishing, hunting, fixing infrastructure etc than we ever spent working in on corporate America. But, it is FAR more fulfilling. People come to visit us and always comment that we are always working but we're happier than anyone they know (even splitting wood in 5 ft of snow when we slacked off too late in the season this year).

Season that waffle iron to within an inch of it's life. Place directly on the coals until smoking hot. Grease, add batter, cook on top of stove. Otherwise it sticks. Some other tricks are let the batter stand for 30 mins, the lysis of the flour helps. Fat in the batter a must. And do without sweet or liquidy additions until it works well most of the time. Canned or frozen berries work great in muffins but reek havoc in waffle irons. Go for dried into the batter before lysis. They absorb some moister and don't turn things that weird blue grey color.

Who would think a video of maintenence and chores would be relaxing, but this one in particular was. These maintenance and repair videos generally are not on my favorite list of all your videos, although I look forward to all you do and always watch each one several times over the course of viewing your channel. This video was so well done showing the tasks done by Eric, interspersed with the house, property and animal care by Arielle. Then some of my favorite viewing is always your cooking. And Arielle, your editing was so superb, especially when taking a breather, like in real life, of relaxing enjoyment of your environment at just over 20 minutes in. You show the magical wonders of Alaska that exhibits why all your hard work is worth it. Most impressive for me is your work ethic where you join forces to do all the big and little tasks vital to your lifestyle. I've never, ever seen 2 people work so successfully as a team in such endeavors. Then while sharing your meal, your love for each other swells with a gentle kiss and a smile. How we all would give the world to have that joy in our lives. At least I can get a vicarious inkling through watching both of you. Thank you for that.

It was 48 here in Anchorage last Friday evening through Saturday. Insane. I remember checking the temp and it was 36 and knew it would be that and then going out to do some things in the driveway and not wearing a jacket then checking and it was suddenly it said 48! In the past 21 years I've been here, it has NEVER been that warm in Anchorage in January. It makes me wonder what this spring and summer have in store for us. 😮❤️

Blueberry waffles are the best. I'm not the only one who likes this channel. 113,000 views on the first day. Well done.

When we camp we place them directly in the fire to get them really hot before using. We then oil, put them in the fire and turn often. Works like a charm. We also have one waffle iron per person.

Wowthanks Arielle and Eric! Now I need to buy a blowtorch to start the fireplace! It was 26* Sunday night in Florida and I used a mere match on our fireplace. Our organic pineapple farm and all the citrus and Florida crops are at risk right now with the 2 40* rainy days (too cold for tropical plants) and another freezing frosty night coming this Saturday. All our hard work....peppers, tomatoes, celery, citrus, banana, pineapples, etc close to ruined now....😱. @Simple Living Alaska. Wow same temperature in Alaska as in Florida 40* and rainy!

@@sknap2728 just had another weekend of sub freezing temps here in Florida, this time 3 nights in a row. Many crops lost. I lost many of my dragon fruit, vines, papaya trees, and other tropicals. 😡🥶😱

@pinsch Runner Oh, I'm so sorry. So devastating to lose crops, especially trees! Too many people think you've got it all covered with "technology." I've read about how much work and all-nighters are needed to keep the fires/heaters going, protecting vast acreages of crops, and lots of prayers. Again, very sorry. Praying u can maintain what you have left and these losses don't present a lasting burden on ur farm.

@@sknap2728 yes, we slept midnight til 2am and then out in the fields again. Painful to go back the next days and see plants and trees wilted like jelly. Yes most people are clueless about where their food comes from. Thx for your kind words
