Thanks George! Because of your videos, I found the courage to quit my lawn service and go DIY. Last year, I used Scotts 4 step (I know, I saw your other video) and I spot treated with tenacity and speed zone as needed. I’ve gotten a lot of compliments, and my lawn has never looked better. I used a big-name lawn service and was never impressed. What sent me over the edge was the runner of spurge that was about a foot wide and ran the entire width of my house. Somehow, my service person never saw or treated it, because I had it the entire year. What’s amazing is that doing it myself is WAY cheaper and doesn’t take much time. I appreciate the information that you share with us. I’m looking forward to having a beautiful lawn for many years to come. By the way, I have a Kentucky blue grass lawn, and I live in Iowa.

I think the reason that they don't combine mesotrione in standard 3-ways of 2,4-D and dicamba is that those work by making the plant grow out of control and basically make them implode on a cellular level. That's why you're supposed to apply them at temps when the weeds will be growing and not yet dormant, and why you add fertilizer to them to make them more effective. Mesotrione blocks photosynthesis, which is counterproductive to the mechanism that allows 3 ways to work.

It's a pretty awesome combo. Triclopyr alone provides excellent control over broad leaf weeds, better than 2,4-d and is much safer as well. Mesotrione is a pretty poor herbicide on it's own but I'm glad to see manufactures adding it into these combo products.

When I apply herbicides, I have found that testing the mixture pH is necessary in my area because municipal water pH is high, and high pH mixtures are typically less effective overall. To test, I have cheap pool pH test strips that I use, and if my pH is too high, I use a product called Wildfire, made by Grower's Source, LLC, that will lower pH and act as a surfactant. Herbicide mixtures should run between a 5 - 6.5 pH for best performance, confirm with product labeling as these values can vary.

I actually like clover and normally leave them alone, but in my yard Creeping Charlie often intermingle with clover. Last year I tried Tenacity and it did nothing to the Creeping Charlie, even after 2 applications spaced 2 weeks apart, though killed the clover. Then I read Purdue University's publication "Turfgrass Weed Control" and they recommend Triclopyr for Creeping Charlie so I applied that after another week. That started to take effect after about 10 days. That gave me courage to try using Triclopyr on more spots in my yard that have a lot of Creeping Charlie this year. But one dosage didn't seem to do anything to them while killing off the clovers that were with them. Right now I'm contemplating whether another dosage of Tripoclyr is needed or do a dosage of Tenacity since last year it took 2 dosage of Tenacity and one of Triclopyr to work.

Sometimes adding iron into the mixture will help prevent chlorosis. Chlorosis can happen after applying herbicides because it either disrupts photosynthesis, or the chemical contains ingredients that act like a salt/sodium. If it is occurring at the tip of grass blades, I'd theorize it was due to the amine salts in the Sublime product. How to avoid: mix iron into your mixture or use a more course spray tip that produces larger water droplets.

Thanks this was so helpful! One question: Would you apply this to the whole lawn as a "preventive" or only on the spots that have weeds? Does that make sense? Like, would you blanket the lawn with it (just in case there were weeds that were "hiding" and not yet fulling showing themselves) or do you just spray the weeds and if more weeds come up in areas that didn't have weeds, (when you sprayed) would you go back and spray them? Sorry that was so long-winded!
@anthonyc1883
5 ай бұрын
Looks like he spot-treated. This is extremely powerful stuff. Applying it all over just in case there might be a hidden weed here and there does not seem to be a good idea. (Edited to add: if you are overrun with weeds, then a broader application would make sense but please remember this is some very, very toxic chemistry. Use sparingly, please!)

I’m curious, starting at 6:25 you said that this can’t be applied to warm season grasses, but on the USE LABEL it specifically gives instructions for use on Zoysia, St. Augustine and Centipedegrass. Like most herbicides I’ve used, temperatures need to be under 90 degrees to apply. It can be used on Bermudagrass, but ONLY while dormant, to kill winter weeds. Likewise, in the USE LABEL, not the outside sticker, it lists possible discoloration for Zoysia, St. Augustine, Centipede, Fine Fescue, Bahia and Seashore Paspalum grasses. Is this what you refer to as “bleaching?” I am currently using the Celsius WG individual packets, for spot treatments of clover, etc. It seems to work really well. I have Zoysia grass.

I mixed up a batch of Tenacity with MSO and sprayed just patches of Poa Annua (Oregon) since label says not to (must kill it, Right?) Patches turned very white, may have killed it or it just died back due to heat wave. Will do it again in spring. Great channel by the way.

The texture is very soft, like fur on an animal, but I don't know what it is or how to kill it. It's aggressively taking over sections of my lawn. Do you know what it is and how I can kill it?

I discovered what the culprit is: the dreaded creeping BENT grass. I know how to treat it but it's unclear how to prevent it from reappearing

How long after spraying can you cut the grass and should you leave the clippings on the lawn

No mowing 2 days before and 2 days after. Doesn’t matter what you do with clippings. Hope that helps 😃

So far, very effective on clover and broadleaf (dandelions). Somewhat effective on the wild violet which I got this for. I applied it and it rained the next day. After a week, some of the violets showed distress but it rained the day after application. I re-applied a week later and again it rained the next day. I don't see any negative impact on the grass. How long does it have to stay on the violet to have full impact? It seems like it rains every 2-3 days of late. The next application I plan on doing the entire lawn and not just the test area.

I've had no issue using 2,4D on clover. Just mix a batch with surfactant and kills pretty quick. Just don't use the store stuff at low concentrations. Get a concentrated bottle of it and mix it right.

Can you spray underneath those trees in your front yard up to the mulching or do you have to stay out of the drip line?

What time of year should/can I apply this, is there any time of the year I should not apply this, and can I do multiple applications per year (if so how many and how long should I wait before applying another application)? My lawn is being taken over by clovers so this video is super helpful!

do not apply when the temps are over 80-85 degrees and you can multiple apps with 30 days in between but i highly doubt you will need a second app. it works very well

I live in Chicago. I have wild violet, clover and quackgrass(?) I applied tenacity last season, but it didn’t kill the clover or wild violet. I have T zone (unopened) Would the Sublime be better to use than T zone? What is a good grassy weed killer?

You've said before to NOT MOW at all on the really hot days as to not overstress the grass (btw, does it matter if you watered it or not?) Well anyways, I'm local near Naperville, would you still mow on days like today or yesterday (High 80's, low 90's)? And if so, what time would you do it? When it gets shady & cooler around 6 or 7pm? Or in the morning before you water? Any advice is much appreciated! 👍

I agree that Speedzone is not great for eliminating clover BUT when adding ammonium sulfate, that you mentioned in a previous video, it supercharged Speedzone. The clover wilted in one day. This never happened before. The tall fescue appears to be unaffected so far.

great to hear rick! pardon me as i misspoke when i addressed speedzone, i meant to say it struggles to control creeping charlie and wild violet, not clover and creeping charlie. Speedzone can def be effective at controling clover in the right conditions

@@PrincessCutLawnCare My lawn is shaded by trees, for up to 50% of the day. A Speedzone treatment will discolor the clover for about two weeks and then it will revive itself. With ammonium sulfate added the clover is toast in one or two days.

Your videos are so helpful and I really appreciate your honesty and approach. I finally got my hands on a quart of Sublime. I've read the application label and I have to say I feel like an idiot. I cannot find the application rate broken down per gallon. Everyone else seems to have this figured out. I have a 4 gallon backpack sprayer that I figured I could just multiply by 4 and come up with the right amount. Does anyone know the 1 gallon application rate for tall fescue? Sublime's website doesn't seem to have this published.
@PrincessCutLawnCare
Жыл бұрын
no worries my friend! sublime is marketing to mostly pros so no worries about not understanding the label as it can def be confusing. if you look on the label there is an application rate listed for spot spraying of 0.75oz per gallon per 1k sqft and this is the rate we used. so multiple that by 4 and your good to go
