Refergeration tech here and FYI you should use a nickel safe ice machine cleaner only when cleaning ice machines and rinse 2 times after cleaning. They use a nickel coating on the evaporator in ice machines (keeps the ice from getting stuck to the evaporator) but it is very easy to wear it off with chemicals. Also props for cleaning the hoses we usually replace them if soaking them in a bucket of diluted ice machine cleaner doesn't work. Also wear gloves when using ice machine cleaner it is nickel safe but it will make your skin tingle and dry it out horrible, eye protection would also not be a horrible idea. Installing an inline water filter for the water inlet would also cut down on needing to clean it and improve the quality of the ice.

I just use DISTILLED VINEGAR to clean it - just run it a few times and don't have this problem. Tubes stay clear! 😊 And it's VERY IMPORTANT that you only use DISTILLED WATER to fill the machine because other types of water may have particles/minerals that cause the build-up in the first place 💙 SIDE NOTE: I did buy the carbon filter that they suggested, but that was the WORSE! It did turn everything black. That's how I found out that vinegar is the solution 😉

There is a carbon "block" filter that can lessen/ eliminate all the black in the tubes. You probably had a "polishing" carbon tube (kinda looks like a cartoon sausage?) @@reginamajors3687 maybe? Vinegar has a relatively high freezing point since its majority water. So, i suppose as long as you do several cycles of just water afterward, it can be beneficial to run a half cup of vinegar through the system. I know I use a vinegar/water/dish soap mix to descale and scrub the water tank about once every 2 weeks. Then I run hot water through the tank because there's a convenient drain plug at the bottom. ALL ice machines MUST be cleaned on a regular basis. Open the cover and most ice machines have the instructions right there. Those tubes are the drains and what you are seeing is mold and algae. When you are at a self service drink machine, pay attention to the ice before adding your liquid drink. A dirty ice machine will be dropping little flecks of mold and algae in the ice. If it's nugget ice, look for tiny flecks of metal indicating the augur is bearing the evaporator cylinder.

I work on icemachines. That sludge is bacteria that grows in the line. You cant completely get rid of it. The only thing you can really do is treat the water before it goes into the unit with a antibacterial filter as well as a filter for whatever type of water you have (ie hardwater or soft water) or when cleaning the unit every six months run some sort of icemachine sanitizer thst has been properly diluted. Whether it be branded or bleach. Also vinegar will work with descaling the unit but makesure to read up on your owners manual to what sort of cleaner is recommended. Different manufacturers use different metals for different icemachines. And certain cleaners will destroy certain icemachines.

Most ice machines at most restaurants have this kind of buildup. It's a very common health code violation. (To the extent that when the health inspector came to check one place I worked at, he would announce it so someone could rush to clean the part he was going to look at, and it wouldn't get shut down. He said there were many other places in town with the same issue, and that if he graded fairly, there would be nowhere to eat in town)

That's strange. Because the vendor in charge of the soda/ice dispenser should be keeping that clean. Upkeep and maintenence is what keeps the warranty valid.

Had a friend who was a health inspector. Soda dispensers, ice machines, and coffee pots were his most common flags. Yes the soda vendor should be helping with keeping the concentrate lines swapped out, but in most cases the regular cleaning of the ice/water system, and the dispensing heads is all on the restaurant. Those dispensing heads should be washed daily as part of closing (unscrew them, 3 compartment sink and scrub brush), and the ice/water systems should be cleaned at least every 3 months, monthly is better. Coffee urns/carafes/filter baskets should also be cleaned daily at close and the whole machine cleaned/descaled every 1-3 months. Double check those contracts and make sure someone is doing that cleaning regularly.

I feel like the inspector is just enabling the problem lol. Maybe he does need to shutdown half the restaurants in town so they know it’s not a joke. Restaurant gets shutdown, maybe even more than once, I bet they won’t forget to clean the machine ever again lol

Yeah this isn’t just “GE fancy ice makers”. AC/refrigerantion tech here - this same thing happens in your AC drain line and/or pan regularly especially in humid areas like Florida. But it also is super common in commercial ice machines, as well as the ice machines in your fridge door without, unfortunately, VERY regular maintenance. If you see black in your ice or drink with ice - this is what it is. But this isn’t just a refrigeration thing; people with pets who have forgotten to freshen the water bowl after an extended period or even a glass of water on a nightstand has deal with the slimy leave-behind standing water creates. This with constant standing water and filters will exacerbate the issue generally. Good on you for rolling up sleeve, pulling that thing apart and getting in there. I always inform homeowners of the work I’m performing and willing to help people keep up with their equipment. Very important with planned obsolescence to keep things working properly and efficiently. Besides, a water filter can’t filter water it can’t receive due to blocked lines. ONE RECOMMENDATION: use a better cleaning agent, something made for human consumption water lines that will rinse cleanly, but honestly it’s fine with a good enough rinse. That stuff is just very concentrated and may leave residue.
@shannonhill3356
7 ай бұрын
@@mischaraine1645 oh yeah. Super common problem here, probably #1 nuisance calls for customers here. Some put vinegar or Simple Green in the line - the best thing to do for most condos is get an in-line ball valve installed before the AC, and a flush T past that or combined, on the PVC line. This allows the AC to be blocked off so that a shop vacuum will only pull from the T towards the wall and suck through any build up (versus losing suction pressure on the AC side that likely has little to no build up). The other option is to cut into the line each time if it’s fully stuck, but eventually you run out of pipe to cut, so best to get a ball valve shut off installed if possible! Even if just for ease of service for the tech, and a better drain clear when done during maintenance or service 👍 If the condo utilizes a common stack tie-in then every unit tied in will be having issue and condo maintenance needs to get involved typically. Most customers expect drain line issues to be easy every time, but keeping up on them is so important as the tend to clog like arteries, and that gunk will turn to a literal type of cement over the cooler parts of the year if left allowed to build up.

What all that gunk is, is CALCIUM CARBONATE, with probably a bit of sodium fluorosilicate. Its a natural mineral sediment that occurs in lines/pipes anywhere there is hard water. Anytime you drinkhard/mineral water you are drinking those minerals. The reason its accumulating in her ice maker tubes is that Calcium Carbonate is LESS SOLUBLE in hot water, and her room temperature is probably warmer then the city water line comming into her house.This means theres LESS of the minerals IN the water, making it "cleaner". If you're craving that soft ice/snow type consistency, look up "instant ice magic trick". It makes the most lovely slushy/snow consistency there is and all you need is a bottle of purified water and a freezer (I use the cheap bulk cases of water, great value brand). You might have to experiment a bit with it to get it perfect. Put multiple bottles in different parts of your freezer and on top of or under various things and check them after about 2.5 hours. Mine comes out perfect nearly every time if I put it on my middle freezer shelf under a large bag of frozen veggies or pizza rolls or chicken nuggets for exactly 3 hours. It's liquid water until you tap or shake it, then it instantly turns to slush. I drink the water and use a pair of scissors to cut the top off the bottle and eat the wet snow/ice with a spoon. Words can't describe how delicious that is. It's like sonic/Smithfield's nugget ice on steroids.

People... this is why they recommend you running it all the time. Condensation forms in the tubes and when water isn't flushing through the tubes on a fairly regular basis, mold will grow. ESPECIALLY, in warm, dark & wet places. Also, if you're not purifying the water GOING IN then you have all of the stuff that's in the water going in, it's gotta go somewhere. Bigger "pieces" (dust.. whatever..) will stick to the tubes of the system if there isn't water frequently going through the tubes. Also- there should be some regular, and now you see, extensive, maintenance recommended. You have a good machine.. you just gotta treat it right.

For those that don't know, you have to clean all ice machines at least once a week. Otherwise the sludge eventually builds up and turns black. It starts off clear so you don't know it's there until it starts turning colors which is too late already. The way I usually clean the ice machine when I was working at a restaurant is to remove any remaining ice and throw it in a freezer. Then, unplug the unit and clean all pipes with a line brush and soap. Flush the lines with clean water. Next remove the water reservoir and ice tray and clean with an extra soft bristle tooth brush. Scratching the sides of the reservoir allows more surface area for sludge to build up on and you don't want to scratch the ice tray for obvious reasons. If you're unable to remove the reservoir or ice tray, spray it down with some diluted bleach water or electrolyzed water and brush what you can reach. Flush out both the water reservoir and ice tray with clean water. Then clean the ice storage area with a sponge and soapy water. Rinse everything well. Reassemble and plug the machine back in. If there is a manual flush switch, run it for a minute or 2 to ensure all the soap is out. Also, if this grosses you out, don't get ice at restaurants because most places don't clean their ice makers well, regularly, or at all. And health inspectors don't check machines unless it's something as simple as a refrigerator's temperature. For everyone still using an ice maker on a fridge without consistent maintenance? You might want to reconsider.

@KC-ym6uk

@@vickieadams6648 depends. Some fountain pop machines don't actually make the ice. Some just have a freezer area where the ice is poured into and contained so workers will have to consistently add ice. This seems to be the popular model nowadays. For any machine that does produce ice, weekly maintenance is what I recommend. Manufacturers may recommend something different but, in my time working at the restaurant for over a decade, I noticed how fast that stuff builds. Now that being said, fountain drink machines ALSO need to be cleaned regularly and can get pretty gross if not maintained correctly. But as we did not have one, I can't go into details on cleaning instructions because I've never cleaned one. I just know because I've heard random techs mentioning it before.

Hey just a suggestion that may be helpful but you could also already be doing this i have the same Ice maker and i says to use distilled water from the gallon sized bottles and use that instead of water from the sink or fridge to help not grow mold but also this could also be a ring you already do but just in case you don’t here’s a tip!

^this! Your city could have fluoride and who knows what else - this also leads to calcium build up which comes along with the mold and mildew. It’s likely calcium building up.

It don't matter if the water is distilled or not. In the right conditions it is gonna mold and mildew!!!! Warm moist places are the only thing mold needs grow

@@TheLoneMittenomg sorry to hear that. I’ve drank nothing but distilled water for a year straight now. Did blood work twice in that time but I can’t remember having hyponatremia. How long did it take you to get it? How did you know?
