The episode of Star Trek I saw, near the end of boot camp, when we were given some free time on a Saturday afternoon. The whole room cheered at the lines: "This is munity, mister." "Yes, sir, it is." Anybody out there who remembers what happened when the Chief ran in wondering what all the cheering was about?

The first two seasons for me were the best in respect to the incidental music written for the series. So many talented musicians and composers working in Hollywood who transferred their talents from movies to television. Alexander Courage and Fred Steiner were literally out of this world in what they brought to the series. I would have bought the LA LA release a few years ago but I'm still saving up for it.😊😊

@@happierabroad TNG was almost as good as TOS, DS9 had its moments while still being the turning point where it all went downhill (read: less hopeful). Voyager started strong with a great premise, but then was wasted for the sake of restoring the old format. Both Enterprise and Discovery tossed canon right out the window in favor of a bizarre mix of memberberries and doing whatever the writers wanted to, although the last season of Enterprise had an admirable effort on the part of Manny Coto to try to fix all of the continuity issues and set up TOS and hopefully the Earth-Romulan War story arc had there been a fifth season. Picard threw out or trampled upon every beautiful thing about TNG and has earned my eternal hatred. SNW returned to format in the best possible way while still updating it with more modern attitudes, but not hammering you over the head with it like they did with Discovery. It makes me wonder if the crap shows between TNG and SNW were just one big New Coke sort of scheme.

I'm not for sure but I know they redid some of the earlier music each season, so the third season will use rerecorded versions of first season cues. There is a great video series by David page that goes into the music of TOS and how they were contractually obligated to record X amount of music per season, which changed by TNG and they had to do new scores for each episode and so didn't reuse music

TOS was produced like a movie with original music nearly always in the background setting the mood well. They just don't make it like they use to, it's too expensive to compose original music for nearly every episode. Pity. At 1:19, the flute solo is so lovely that Debussy would be proud. I don't hear two of favorite episodes here: Doomsday Machine and the Empath. Loved the haunting music used in both episodes. Would love to get the soundtrack to both.

Can't wait to listen to the entire thing. I was born too early to watch the show when it originally aired; I came into this world the summer before Star Trek debuted on TV. But my family and I eventually found the reruns and fell in love with the writing, music, acting, and the whole fantasy aspect. I still hold the series in deep fondness. Plus, every time I hear the main theme tune or the end credits music, I always appreciate the guy who is pounding on those drums (bongos?) like he is having a blast. :) Thank you, from a nostalgic admirer of Jim, Bones and Spock.

Two episodes come to mind where the pieces were appropriate /edited perfectly. "The tholian web "last attempt to rescue Kirk is successful! " City on the edge of forever" the ending where Kirk says "let's get the hell out of here" the ending piece that is also used in a couple of other episodes felt very somber and mysterious feel! There are many other episodes where different types of music were spliced together yet they came out perfectly ! BTY I think a time of production I don't think you could even say the word hell and if that's true this was cutting edge TV!

Man, this takes me to reruns in the 1970's as a little kid. My uncles that watched it live when it originally aired got me into it, and it fostered my imagination and desire to join the military to serve & travel. It was the Navy in outer space! I always loved it for being thought-provoking Sci Fi, not the unintelligent crap that they slop out today. My uncles and I still say things like, "Recommendations, Mr. Spock?" when trying to figure things out. Or, raising an eyebrow and saying "FASCINATING" when learning something new. The way that they had cultural diversity without being overbearing about it. It was just normal to have crew members from different backgrounds. We as "Chicanos" thought it was cool that they had Commodore Jose I. Mendez. Man, I love everything about Star Trek TOS. Truly groundbreaking.

It's amazing. I can hear music from other 60s sci-fi shows that I also enjoyed and it will sound so utterly generic, like it could have come from any number of police, drama or action shows. Especially Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. Lost in Space was just a little bit more distinctive, most notably the "Family" theme. But I hear a few notes of virtually anything from TOS and I immediately know it's from that show. Likewise I Dream of Jeannie had unmistakable cues (after the drab first season), as well as Gilligan's Island and Batman. Some shows just had everything pull together into a cohesive whole, musically speaking. Can't even say that about TNG, which I can't remember any music from, other than Picard's flute solo from "The Inner Light."
