@MrRandycouturefan Other way around. Deep Purple copied it from Warpig. This was released in 1970, Deep Purple's Fireball a year later.

Hmmm, Watson, let's look at the facts. The songs for Fireball were recorded between September 1970 and June 1971 and the album released in July 1972. Deep Purple played Toronto in July 1972 as part of the 'In Rock' tour but the set list did not include "Fireball". Given Warpig's low world status there would not have been much opportunity for them to sit in on a session during Purple's brief visit to Canada where they might have heard songs for the up-coming album. On the other hand, Warpig's status on the Canadian rock scene probably meant they were played quite frequently on national radio, so Purple should have had lots of opportunity to hear 'Rock Star'. Compared to 'In Rock', the 'Fireball' album is a bit of a dirge with the exception of the song 'Fireball', which was more reminiscent of stuff from the previous album. According to Wikipedia: "Blackmore, in particular, stated publicly that he was not overly pleased with Fireball. He said of the production: "Fireball [the album]...that was a bit of a disaster, because it was, like, thrown together in the studio. Management pressure, we had no time. 'You gotta play here, here, there, then you've got to make an LP.' I told them, 'you want an LP, you've got to give us time.' But they didn't. I just threw ideas to the group that I thought up on the spur of the moment." Short of time and lacking a punchy song to headline the album, did Purple include a version of Warpig's 'Rock Star'? I believe so. If they did then full marks to Warpig for one of the best Purple songs ever.

The original release of the War Pig album was in 1970. Two songs, this one and Flaggit were re-recorded in 1973. The 3 minute version is 1973 and did get some play. The 1970 version was through a smaller independent label and probably more obscure to come by.

@rippenburn Well stated, I heard the "Pigs" in 69 ripping this up. They were signed to FontHill Records in 68, released their album April 70, way before Fireball July 9, 1971. The Album Received 4 1/2 Stars from AllMusic, so it was well known by those in the Scene. They opened for bands in 69 and 70, Savoy Brown for one, as well as played the Ontario Club Circuit. London Records re-issued the album in 72, re- producing this song and one other with Terr Brown producing (He the Producer of Rush, for years), This hit the RPM Charts for 7 weeks hitting as high as #52.

@@toddstevens13 I don't know your age but it's really funny discussing this outright theft of material back in the 60s and 70s when today my kids (who are all in their 20s) either don't realize a song has been plagiarized or are so young as to believe Tears for Fears stole 'Mad World' from Gary Jules! And even my wife (who is a lot younger than I) was shocked when I played Pachelbel's Canon in D minor after Memories by Maroon 5. It has a Purple flavoring to it, just like Purple had an Uriah Heep flavor and vice versa. Both had a mix of incredible keyboards/organs/synths, Heep better harmonies, but obviously Richie was the superior Guitarist, both had vocalists with massive range. Warpig, sadly never got the backing the other two got. To see Warpig rip it Live from 68-73ish they were comparable, but will go down as an after thought, sadly.

Deep Purple in Rock wasn't even released until June, 1970, and Fireball, July 1971. As in the case of Bombay Calling / Child in Time, Deep Purple "punished" those who blatantly copied parts of their songs. This is another similar case since this Canadian band called Warpig in their song Rock Star (late 1970s) had included several "little things" taken from songs from the Deep Purple In Rock album.
@toddstevens13

@Gustavo. The only problem with your premise, is that WarPigs album was released APRIL 1970, and received 4 1/2 Stars from AllMusic, so it was known, and Deep Purple in Rock was not released until June, 1970, so hard for WarPigs
@toddstevens13
4 жыл бұрын
@Gustavo Part 2, Rock Star was first released as well as the rest of their album in April 1970, before both Deep Purple in Rock, released June, 1970 and a year before Fireball which was released July, 1971. Opps. Now WarPigs was RE-Released in 1972 by London Records and Rock Star was released then, (not late 70's) reaching the RPM Top 100 for 7 weeks peaking at #52. So we will accept your apologies. The Band has been reunited since 2004 and their album re-re-released in 2006 on Relapse Records. Find it and enjoy it, hear all the ways they were ahead of other groups.
