Thank you, great tutorial. I am now retired and wanting a new hobby, this looks like something I would enjoy. I have been sewing most of my spare time, I have a true love of fabrics. A new fabric store just opened nearby, so I think this may be a good fit for me. I will want to order a loom from you.

We weighed building our own or purchasing a loom. I can tell you that the one from LibbyLuLa is a great value. The wood is smooth and will last a lifetime without warping or spliting, the hardware is heavy duty so there is no fear of the eyelets pulling out or cracking the wood. The dowl pegs are ribbed so that the material stays and doesn't slide off. All considered, we could not have built this quality of frame for the money. Oh and you must add in the "free" support you get from the maker. I am very happy with the loom and instructional videos. My first rug is about half done. On a personal note, make sure your hands and fingers are in good strength, I've used pain cream so that I could keep going. Happy twining.

Do you think you could use t-shirt material for the main fabric? I know they braid rugs with t-shirts. or what about towels or terry cloth material?
@rswcreatives
7 жыл бұрын
i haven't done so myself because of the stretching. Braided rugs don't typically use a frame. to weave with, it would probably be ok to use as long as you allow for the give it has. as the material you are lace the frame with, you really need to keep good tension there as that is what holds your rug together. Haven't used towels either since those usually land as cleaning rags once they are too far gone to use in the bathroom anymore. Terry cloth tends to shed once it's cut. It's honestly a trial and error process with anything new like that. I find that fabrics that string or shed when cut tend to make the rug look messy or leave a mess behind. Definately something to tinker with next time i get the frame out which should be rather soon as my current rugs are showing some wear after being outside on the back door for almost 3 years and lots of use! Give it shot! can't hurt anything and when I pull my frame out, I'll try those types of materials and see how they work and will post my findings. Thanks for Commenting!!

that's awesome. It's a fun project and useful since you can make them any size you need. your hands get sore but the end product is sweet. we use them all the time considering we have dogs and keeping the dirt down is key around here. can put your vacuum to them, shake them out like any other rugs. if your washer is large enough you can wash them but i really don't go that far. Thrift stores are my source of materials since wed is 1/2 off day and i can get material for a rug for under $10 instead of $60 in brand new materials. Only did one new and that was a costly project but it looked great in her office. Good luck with your rug!!!

Can you give us an idea of how many sheets we would need to maker a 21 x 36 inches rug?
@rswcreatives
2 жыл бұрын
That's gonna depend on what size sheet your using. If you are using a twin sheet..I would suggest 2 just for warping but have a 3rd just in case. It will also depend on how thick you make those strips. Average is about inch and half or the width of 2 fingers. A.queen should cover your warp but again..have extra. Can always use it on another project. Thrift store sheets..allow for some loss due to stains or.fraying. weaving, that's really going to depend on how tight you plan to weave and how wide you make the strips. Always have backup tho. Hope that helps.

@@rswcreatives thank you. I am planning to make rugs for my kitchen. Imagine that I am going to do everything with the same color and it will be queen size sheets, one inch each stripe. How many sheets would I need to complete one rug 21 x 36 inches? Are you able to give me an idea of how much fabric should I get? Since I am going to make three rugs, I want to get enough fabric só I will be able to make all rugs look the same.

ya know, I never really measured them. I basically went two knuckles worth on my index finger. the one this video was done with was measured that way. I have gone down a bit smaller on the mats I made for the pups to sleep on tho. I suppose it's really going to be up to you on how thick you want that to be. they will be on the inside anyway but I wouldn't go too small. when you go to tighten them up to start twining, you don't want them to break.

2 questions 1. Can I use a heavy/thick jute/burlap cording for the warp? Have you used Any other cording or warping material? 2. Are there other twining/weft threading patterns/techniques?
@rswcreatives
4 жыл бұрын
I would test burlap before doing the whole thing. When bgg burlap is cut it tends to start falling apart. I have not personally used anything other then fabric so far. As for patterns, havent looked for any other but what you weave is completely up to your imagination. Probably not much help but since the weft is shifted under over to get the lock, patterns may be a bit more difficult to maneuver.

How much fabric of 3 colors do you need for a 3x5 rug? If I cut them in 2" strips...Thanks
@rswcreatives
7 жыл бұрын
it's going to depend on how tightly you weave the material and the material you use. One rug I made, took over 8 yards of one color because there wasn't any give in the material at all. Another rug, got by with less. Using 3 colors, if you are buying brand new material, I would say be safe with 4-5 yards per color and make sure the material you use is not being discontinued.it takes more then you think. Most of our rugs were done from second hand material and mixed with others. If we ran out of one we just added something else. only one rug was from new material and I actually spent almost $60 in material to get it done. It was a gorgeous rug and she loved it.. but it was up there cause I had to keep going back for one specific color. So just give yourself some extra.

Is there stretch to it? Is obe xolor going to be more prominent then the other two? One color could be 2 -3 yards and abother be a yard. If your buying it.. I would get at least 2-3 yards. Even if you have some left over, tou can use it in another piece or as fringe. Thanks for watching and commenting

If I’m using wool-rug hooking quality-what should I use for warping my loom?
@rswcreatives
4 жыл бұрын
rug hooking usually uses a burlap or woven mess that wool fiber is pulled thru the holes of the fiber. are you planning on using hooking materials to weave with rather then pulling thru? if so, the warp would still be fabric. your tension is held by the warp on a twine frame so it has to be something that can be tightened up and hold. anything that stretches will loosen over time and create a sagging effect as you go along. If your doing rug hooking as it's intended, that's a different method completely. Hopefully that helped some.

I’m using the wool to twine a rug. Just needed to know if I should use a good cotton to warp the loom with or should I use wool. I’ve done a lot of rug hooking-so I understand that process. I’ve twined rugs before-but that had to be 50 years ago. Thank you.

@@sammysingleton5529 cant say I've done that type of weaving before. On the loom I have, the pegs are a bit farther apart. I would image a sturdy cotton wrap would work. Love your videos! I've made several rugs on a makeshift loom and I'm having fun. I'm considering buying a loom. At the beginning of this video you say this loom can make a 3 x 5 rug and also smaller rugs. When I look at the LibbyLula site I see an adjustable loom that is 25 inches x 41.5 inches, as the maximum rug size. I think I'd prefer the option of making a 3 x 5 rug. Guess I'm wondering if your loom is really that big or if Libby Lula decided to make a smaller loom.

How thick are the material strips that you cut? How does it change the process if they are thinner?
@rswcreatives
5 жыл бұрын
mine were about an inch wide. the process is the same no matter how wide you cut your strips, the result is what changes. wide strips, like 4-5 inches will make it a bit more bulky and actually consume more material. too thin and you'll have breakage while you weave. most that I know who make twined rugs usually go no less then an inch wide. when you are starting to warp your board, those I would go no less then an inch simply for strength. that's the bones of the rug. when you start weaving, less can be used there with less risk of breaking material. Hope that helps! Thanks for commenting
