Are we so distracted by details associated with the Thomas Jolly tableaux that we're missing the larger point -- whether the display of sexualized, raucous behavior belongs in a public venue such as the Olympics which is globally broadcast and likely to be watched by families with children? I would be equally concerned with or without drag queen participation. Inclusivity is not only an LGBTQ+ issue, but also about what is good for families, however one wishes to define them. Childhood innocence is worthy of protection, but many in today's more liberal secular society disagree. I found the Jolly segment to be ill-advised and in poor taste -- inappropriate for an Olympics opening ceremony. It seemed less about inclusivity and more like another "in your face" message from those whom society unjustly persecuted and marginalized for far too long. Nevertheless, that cannot justify shining a spotlight on behavior which debases vs. elevates humanity. The Olympics are about honoring those who train and discipline their bodies to achieve amazing athletic feats. Each of us can exercise discipline over our bodies and keep intimate activities private -- allowing space for childhood innocence regardless of gender or sexual orientation. A true celebration of inclusivity would also embrace personal consideration for others, including athletes who don't cheat to compete, the religious, and those upholding traditional family values. -- Do I believe the segment was inspired by da Vinci's painting "The Last Supper" (composition has commonalities)? No. -- Do I believe it was inspired by Bejlert's painting "Festin de les Dieux"(theme has commonalities) as Jolly stated? Yes. -- Was Jolly aware that similarities to da Vinci's painting could spark controversy? Possibly. -- Are some delighted to see that conservative, traditional, and/or religious individuals have taken offense? Likely, and also consistent with what I see as historically secular French enjoyment of shocking and mocking those who are less liberal. As an alternative to taking offense, believers can take a page from Jesus' playbook. When He was arrested in Gethsemane, He corrected Peter for militant behavior and healed the ear of the Roman soldier whom His disciple had attacked. As He was mocked in the lead up to crucifixion, He remained silent. When He was mocked by one of the thieves on the cross, He prayed. Sin didn't surprise or scare Jesus then, and it shouldn't surprise or scare believers now. The call is to see as God sees, turn the other cheek, and follow His Ways which include Truth and Grace in full and equal measure. Luke 6:27-29 reads, “But I say to you who are listening: 'Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. To the person who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other as well.'" Let God's Grace and Truth be with all and acknowledged and embraced by all, for the good of all.

My first objection is the use of the word "secularism" in the title, "secularism" removes religion from state affairs and places it in the private sphere, it does not ridicule people's faith. I really gave this video a thumbs down because all three interviewees went out of their way to whitewash an ugly, tasteless and orgiastic display of depravity. Whether there was an intended reference to "The Last Supper" or not (and there most manifestly was) fades into insignificance in the face of the sheer ugliness of it all. The organizers couldn't have been so dim witted as to believe that, at an international event that hosts the world, no one would be offended. They are all lying!

2 ай бұрын
@@celeritasc9207 Where is this overwhelming evidence?
@celeritasc9207
2 ай бұрын
@@pankajchand6761 Sure, I will provide you with evidence. 1) There is zero evidence that the performance is related to Da Vinci’s “Last Supper.” 2) The performance occurred during the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. The Olympics were inspired by the games of Ancient Greeks who worshipped the 12 Olympian Gods. Reference to Ancient Greek mythology and the Olympian Gods is an expected and common theme during the Olympics. The Feast of Dionysus was a celebration that lasted several weeks. During this time there were various plays both dramatic and comedic. The 2024 Olympic performance was comedic in nature in alignment with the tradition of the ancient feast. 3) Dionysus, the God of Wine, Fruit, Fertility, etc., was initially depicted as very masculine, but over time was often portrayed with androgynous features. In the Orphic Hymn 41, the goddess Mise is referred to as an aspect of Dionysus, who is described as male and female. As a child, Dionysus was hidden by dressing in girls' clothing as a disguise. Other gods are also referred to as both male and female in the Orphic Hymns including Selene, Athena and Adonis. “Dionysus has been dubbed a patron god of hermaphrodites and trans... by Robert C. Ferrari in the 2002 Encyclopedia of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Culture.” The LGBTQ community has adopted Dionysus as a representation of their culture. It is likely this is why they chose the Feast of Dionysus for their performance. 4) Google: “File:Bijlert - Le Festin des dieux - 09-530998” to view the image of the Dutch painting by Jan van Biljert circa 1630s which is similar to the scene in the performance. Obviously, it is not identical but there is a long rectangular table, similar to the one in the performance. It is surrounded by various gods in various stages of dress and undress. Other depictions also have similarities but lack the table. 5) Over the centuries there have been various depictions of Dionysus and the Feast of the Dionysus that show him in various stages of dress and undress. Sometimes he is adorned with fruits and flowers as he was in the performance at the Olympics. Google “Dionysus Through The Ages: The Dawning of the Twentieth Century and Modern Expression” (Wordpress . Com) for examples. Google “Dionysus” and you will see three images. The center colourful image is similar to how he was portrayed during the performance at the Olympics. The body is bronze rather than blue, but the beard stands out depicted in the performance. The expression is similar. It appears this image inspired how Dionysus was depicted. 6) The Olympics spokesperson and the creative director of the opening ceremony performance, Thomas Jolly told us the performance was inspired by the Feast of Dionysus. “Why is he there? Because he’s the god of feasting, of wine, and the father of Sequana, the goddess of the River Seine.” Other commentary by organizers includes “I think we tried to celebrate, community, tolerance.”... “The interpretation of the Greek God Dionysus makes us aware of the absurdity of violence between human beings.” Conclusion It can only be interpreted as being inspired by the Feast of Dionysus with a message to encourage us to embrace tolerance, celebrate life and live in peace with one another. What is wrong with that?

No one seems to be focusing on the real offense: poor artistry. The trouble with the mental political chatter is that it fails to show any awareness of aesthetics - just like the directors of this ceremony. The issue which seems to have everyone's panties in a twist -- the symbolic content of representing DaVinci's Cenacolo Vinciano and Dionysus alternatively -- is only served as a focus for discord because the costuming, art direction, and execution was the work of hacks. Ask any art director or costume designer you can find and they'll tell you: this was phoned in by people who pocketed the ceremony's budget and didn't want to work harder at nailing the concept, whatever it was. It was just an ugly execution. It was poor craftsmanship. The point of using actual artist and an actual budget to stage presentations such as these controversial scenes is that when the art is spectacular an savvy, it flies. If you look at prior ceremonies such as Athens in 2004 or China in 2008, you see what hard work and craft can produce and how it can simply dazzle. The French were lazy and didn't give it an honest effort to spoof Greek gods or Cenacolo Vinciano or whatever else they were doing. If the designers who came up with Tim Curry's Dr. Fran-N-Furter, or if RuPaul had taken a crack at it, no one would have complained. It was French whimsy, but it wasn't well crafted. It was very poor artistry on the level of a 10th grade school play. When you consider how many billions have been pocketed by politicians for this ceremony, you'd be forgiven for expecting they'd worked harder at making it all look competent.
