@@charlesparr1611 He created an independent nation who had control of their own borders, clearing up the ambiguity- The shire was only allowed to be created if they held fealty to the King. Thousands of years of neglect later and their legal status has not changed. Aragorn’s declaration was that they had earned their independence and their former obligations to Gondor and Arnor were revoked. They now had borders and only they chose who crossed them. Our modern selves always interpret that to be about big people being banned from the shire - you’re banned from the shire in much the same way you are banned from Argentina. Don’t just arrive at the border and expect entry, ask permission before you get there. Remember Tolkien lived through the aftermath of wars where subsumed nations were given back their independence and new nations were forged, that’s where you need to place your mind when interpreting the deeds of Aragorn and the Shire, that’s where Tolkien drew inspiration. When was the last time you heard of a ghetto that could turn the tax collectors away? And continuing that thread, giving people their own land, and letting go of control of their destiny so they can control it themselves, traditionally, is different to marginalising those people.

I love Aragorn -- a truly great kingly character -- the more so because of his awareness of his own flaws. He had one flaw, though that he was blind-to -- that grace, compassion and high mindedness have to be wielded by a leader judiciously. If he hadn't inserted himself at the moment Theodin was about to strike down Wormtongue, Saruman would not have known of the flaw in the wall of the Rohan keep. I'm glad that was written the way it was. It shows the exploration that went into crafting the Aragorn character and how even the right thing in the moment can come back to bite.

Aragorn surely refurbished Isengard, the land around it, but the tower didn’t need any help. Also, this video was pretty soft on Aragorn. Elessar was a great king. He did what his Numerorian ancestors or Elendil, Arnor, and Isildur could not. He resisted and defeated Sauron. As a chieftain of the Dunadain he led them in every battle and in the Siege of Mordor he stood at the front with everyone putting himself in danger. After Saurons defeat he brought peace. Honored the hobbits by giving them the Shire, pledging their protection, and never asking for tribute. He brokered peace with the men of the east, many of whom followed Sauruman. He also brought balance back to his people. The Numenorians began to fear death which was originally called the Gift of Men. Men weren't bound to Arda like the elves were. Even the Valar didnt know what happened after men died. But if it was a gift it wasnt something to be feared. The Numenorian kings would fight to stay alive instead of allowing themselves to die naturally. Aragorn stopped that, allowing his death in the year 120 FA and Arwen did so one year later. Thus bringing an end to the sins of ancient Numenor and restoring balance to them. He led by example in everything he did wven down to death. He was the greatest of the mannish race of the entire Third Age. And his rule was one of peace, prosperity, and justice. He wasn't a good king, he was a great man who was a king.

@marcbartuschka6372
Жыл бұрын
I guess it depends. For the people in Gondor he was a good king, and same could be said about many people in former Arnor. He brought peace for these realms. He was generous to those who helped him and ruled just in the core lands. On the other side while he made peace with some kingdoms who were allied with Sauron, many people in the East and South will likely did forever curse his name and fought against him with courage and desperation many years after the Dark Lord has been defeated. His forces invaded their lands far beyond the borders Gondor had hold for centuries and I doubt that this build goodwill in these lands. And this wars went on for almost a generation (since Eomer has to lead his men into foreign wars until he had become an old man). For them he was just a tyrant as other Gondorian kings of the past. I could imagine that some people did never let go of this hate and they prayed to their fallen god to return and avenge them. And the surviving orcs in the North and trolls and wargs, well that is of course also another story.

9:19 this is the thing that people do not pay enough attention to. It blows the idea that Aragorn had imperialist ambitions straight out of the water. If he had imperialist ambitions, he would hardly have told the Druedain that he was totally not going to mess with their forest. He would have just slaughtered them all. Of course, what people seem strangely incapable of realizing is that it makes absolutely no sense for Aragorn to be interested in expanding the nation's territory: his income presumably comes from land that Arwen inherits from her father and grandparents. Opening up land for colonization just drives the value of his properties down: so it's inherently a disincentive towards imperialist behavior. This is why medieval monarchs by and large did not try to expand their nations' borders, and had no interest in colonizing foreign countries (rather than simply raiding them). Only after the industrial revolution was in full swing did real life monarchies start to have any interest in the imperialist machinations of the mercantile gentry. And those were monarchs who didn't have a history of failed colonization projects looming over them. You can bet Elrond made damn sure little Estel learned the lessons of Numenor's downfall, and the failure of Anarion's line. Aragorn was not about to repeat the same mistakes his ancestors made. That is not of course to say that his dynasty didn't end up doing so: but that is pure speculation years and years removed from Aragorn himself. 14:36 also this. Tolkien gives is the perspective of the hobbits *in order to distance us from the humans* in the story. These are NOT ordinary normal humans. Aragorn is not a real monarch, not a real person whom anyone could expect to match. He is ripped straight from Isaiah's prophecies. He is the Redeemer, the prophesied messiah, the warrior-king with healing hands: a figure who is just as fantastical as the Elves and Sauron. Tolkien's heroes are fighting a diabolical foe, so they need to be led by an angelic hero. And Aragorn is that: his powers of healing and inspiration come from Melian the Maia. Although Tolkien fleshes out this messianic figure, he remains remote from the perspective of the reader. Aragorn's life experience is not similar to your life experience. Your life probably resembles that of Frodo, Sam, Merry or Pippin much more closely. Tolkien's humans are fantasy creatures just as much as his elves and dwarves and dragons: because the lives of Tolkien's humans are intentionally dissimilar from yours. It is the hobbits, not the Edain, whose lives most closely resemble the lives of modern people. Trying to make Aragorn behave like a modern person just doesn't work, because he fundamentally is not: just as much as Elrond or Galadriel are not.
